Both Carolina and Jacksonville made it to the conference championship game in 1996 despite it being just their second year in existence. The Jags squeaked into the postseason at 9-7 and then upset Buffalo and Denver in the playoffs. Their divisional round victory over the Broncos is still considered to be among the biggest upsets in NFL history. Their luck ran out in New England against the Patriots in the AFC championship game. Carolina took a different path to this game in Green Bay. The Panthers rode a truly dominant defense and the best special teams unit in the league to a 12-4 record and a first round bye. The two players with the most sacks in the NFL were both on the Panthers. They won 4 games by at least 20 points and 10 of their 12 wins were by double digits. They smothered the defending champion Cowboys in the divisional round before losing to a historically great Packers team. The 1996 Packers remain the only NFL team since the merger to lead the league in both scoring offense and scoring defense. As good as the Panthers were in their second season, they never stood a chance.

I agree, Carolina did not stand a chance playing against the Packers at negative 15 degrees in Lambeau. Lambeau have "humbled" alot of warm weathered teams into submission.

QB, Kerry Collins was decent in mid/late '90s to early 2000s but after that I guess opposing teams had him mostly figured out. Maybe the Ravens exposed something in him because by the time Collins was with Raiders in '04, '05 there was nothing.

Everyone other than Panther fans wanted to see a Dallas vs Greenbay rematch at Lambeau. If Michael Irvin doesn't get hurt on the Cowboys first possession against Carolina. We most likely would have got the DAL vs GB game.

Losing arguably the best WR in the league that season only made the situation that much worse. Also numerous close games during the regular season Irvin ended being the difference for us.

@@clickman443 It was going to be a tough game regardless with Carolina being undeafted at home and having a really tough blitz heavy defense. I thought we matched up well against them. The difference in the game came down to Dallas settling for FG's and Carolina scoring TD's. Even without Irvin we had the ball down six at the end of the game with a chance to steal a win. It would have been an anticlimactic win regardless because Irvin/Deion wouldn't have been available in the NFC Championship game.

@@supersexysega I was never a huge fan but I always said if there was one game I had to bet house and I could have any team I wanted, it would be prime 92-93 cowboys. I thought they were the most talented team from top to bottom I had ever seen. I got no enjoyment out of watching them go 6-10 in 97. I think that just taught me how short most careers are in the NFL and if you get a team like that, appreciate it because once it's gone, it's gone.

1996 Packers need more recognition as one of the greatest teams of all time. 13-3, scored the most points in the league, and gave up the fewest. The had the Back to Back league MVP at QB and the best defensive player in the league in Reggie White. They beat 8 teams by 25+points and they won all their playoff games by at least 14 points. Yet no one even talks about them as the best team of the 90s, let alone one of the best in league history.

As a Packer fan I agree that, that TD to Dorsey Levens was not a TD, it was incomplete. His left foot was out of bounds. But the lack of replay karma did strike the Packers during the 1998 Wild Card Playoff game, the T.O. Catch game. Jerry Rice a few plays before the T.O. Catch did fumble. It was obvious. That's the call that led the NFL to reinstate replay in 1999. Yeah, that T.O. Catch should've never happened, and, I've seen plenty of times the Cowboys getting screwed too.

@@rattmausch As a Cowboys fan I can’t stand the niners and packers but you guys were screwed with that jerry rice fumble. Amazing. I also think that Des caught the ball vs your packers 2015 playoffs, he caught the ball, made a football move and reached for the end zone but the refs called it an incomplete pass. Terrible.

@@josecarranza7555 I'll be honest, I was such a smart ass for that Dez Bryant play. I was like, "He didn't complete the process of the catch!!!". Obviously because I was being bias but in reality he caught the ball then reached for the end zone, granted, he probably could've been called down at the inch line, but, Dallas would've scored. Though we'll never know the true outcome of the game. There was still some more football to be played. It wasn't like that would've been a game winner. Rodgers still would've had plenty of time.
