1996 Columbia TriStar DVD promo
Фильм және анимация
Featuring the legendary "trailer voice guy" Don Lafontaine, this was included at the beginning of Sony/Columbia-Tristar's first DVD releases. This one is taken from a 4x3 movie transfer to appear properly here; widescreen 16x9 movies had this with a blue border on the sides. Their first few DVD releases were only 16x9 widescreen (as they should be), with a couple titles (Fly Away Home and Matilda) only in 4x3 pan & scan because those are just kids' movies and obviously nobody cares about those. Starting with Last Action Hero they made most titles 2-sided discs with widescreen on one side and pan & scan on the other, which was a good solution as it pleased everybody. Columbia TriStar was one of the best DVD labels for a few years, until 2003 when their quality began to slip. Several catalog titles were issued only in pan & scan format (making them just about useless on a widescreen TV), and if that wasn't enough they began reissuing many of their 2-sided titles as 1-sided discs with ONLY the pan and scan version! (These included Last Action Hero and The Cable Guy shown here.) For this reason, my new widescreen TV will NOT be a Sony.
Note that Ghostbusters and Close Encounters are shown here and were planned for release in 1997, but Ghostbusters was delayed until 1999 and Close Encounters several years after that.

Back in the late 90s, if you owned a DVD player, you were considered rich.

This and the Universal Studios dvd promo are nostalgic!! Both are awesome.
I'm watching Jumanji and it's unbelievable that most of the images I remembered from that movie came out of this promo. It brings back so many memories.

@@devinnytroysmediacornerThere was also a DVD release in 2005, which had a cool slipcover that doubled as a board game.
This commercial meant I was about to watch a movie when I was a kid. Life was good.
I'm still collecting DVDs and Blu-Ray whenever the price is cheap now.

Whenever I buy Columbia TriStar DVDs on either Amazon, eBay or Mercari, I always make sure that they're the double-sided DVDs with the widescreen version on one side and full screen on the other on many of their catalog titles that were originally released on DVD around 1997-2000. Warner Bros. also did double-sided DVDs, as well as Fox with most of their family movies as well. Fly Away Home (1996) eventually got a Widescreen Special Edition DVD in 2001.

Correct. Material Girls (MGM) was also double sided and contain the 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment logo on both sides of the disc despite being a MGM movie that’s been released by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in 2006 because the film has the 2003 MGM DVD logo intact.

This is on my A League Of Their Own DVD.

I get so much nostalgia 😢😢😢
Had this on Jumanji, Matilda, and Fly Away Home. Have a few of the other titles in the list now, but later editions that don't have this. It's funny seeing some of these movies down the line years after seeing this. ha

Nostalgia pura, era criança e tinha ganhado o DVD de Jumanji em meados de 2001, e havia essa intro, se você reconhece pelo menos 80% dos filmes que aparecem nesse vídeo, você foi uma criança feliz nos anos 90/00
From Here to Eternity wasn't released to DVD until 2001 and Sense and Sensibility was not on DVD until 1999

I remember seeing this promo and thinking wow, look how great this is... DVD!! The fastest adopted format ever, now, because of Streaming, it is almost a dead format for me, I havent watched a DVD in over a year, maybe more! I get movies ripped and store them on a 4 TB HD..

I think DVD is hardly dead. Maybe in retail, but streaming is extremely limited. Honestly, even if I subscribed to all of the major ones, I'd still be missing most of my collection. Maybe I can pay to stream on demand, but who wants to pay the same price or MORE just to stream? Streaming has the potential, but it's biggest obstacle is that it's too scattered. Blu-Ray might look better, but nobody will notice much unless they have a huge TV. And a lot of people just don't have one big enough to matter. But I considered Blu-Ray merely DVD evolved and not necessarily something that killed it.
Shrek: Two Words! Okay! Shut Up!
