Each review feels like a story. This one proves so much the fact that in late 90s only Ambrose and lara performance would win West Indies something. Shame that he was injured in 4th test which was decisive.

Oh, and although they were past their prime by this stage, Ambrose and Walsh were still a force to be reckoned with. This was Ambrose's last tour to Australia; Walsh toured one more time in 2000/01. But Lara, when he was on song, he REALLY was on song. His innings in that ODI in Perth is one of the best innings I've seen in an ODI. I still remember when the Windies needed 99 off the last 11 overs to knock Australia out of the tournament. 99 off 11 overs was unheard of back then

I made a similar point about this on Rob's Steve Waugh/Allan Donald 1998 video. Don't get me wrong, we all know the Windies had amazing fast bowlers from the mid 70s until they lost their no.1 title in 1995, as well as two of the best batsmen the world has ever seen in Sir Viv Richards and Brian Lara. However, outside of the amazingly talented players the had, there was very little depth below the national level in their domestic competition and once the last line of outstanding bowlers

I guess another thing working against the West Indies is the Major League Baseball. The players that do have a lot of potential in cricket would be easy targets to get poached by talent scouts of the MLB, who'd offer FAR MORE money than they could even earn in the Indian Premier League.

who could forget that farcical 2007 World Cup, especially the final where the ICC officials took the gloss off Australia's thoroughly deserved moment of glory when they made the players come back out onto the field in pitch-black darkness. Although Australia shat all over everyone from a great height, that bungle by the ICC was a dampener on what should've been a momentous occasion.

(cont). in Bishop/Ambrose/Walsh/Benjamin retired, they were ALWAYS going to be in the crapper. Although Lara did bail them out on numerous occasions (he was singlehandedly the only thing that stood between Australia and victory in that 1999 series, as was seen in that famous 3rd test at Barbados), it was always going to be way too much to rely on one player to carry the side (like the mentality Indians have towards Tendulkar). Also, the fact that the West Indies is the only test nation to

Cricket is dead in the West Indies. It is very sad. I was in Antigua on holiday recently and couldn't see anyone playing cricket anywhere on the island. That is now reflected in the quality of their players. It is one of the primary reasons for the decline of Test cricket itself. When West Indies were strong, Test cricket really meant something. Now with flat track bullies averaging 55, it has become a joke.

have players from multiple countries (if you don't count England, which is technically run by the England and WALES cricket board). That is also going to pose a problem when you pick players from different nations and put them all into one team. They simply don't get enough time to gel together as a side. But yeah, after the '90s, the state of cricket in the West Indies really declined rapidly. Even when I watch highlights of that famous '99 series, crowds are only about a small fraction

Ah, what a memorable series. Australia finally winning the Sir Frank Worrell Trophy on home soil for the first time in 20 years and have held it ever since this series. Memorable moments as a then-9 yr old include: Ian Healy's 161* at The Gabba, Tubby Taylor's slip catch at the SCG, Bevan taking 10 wickets and Blewett getting out on 99 in Adelaide where Australia won the series, Lara's century and all the cracks at the WACA on probably one of the worst pitches I've seen seen following cricket

@lenestor They are a sad sad rabble. They look good on occasions, but really the production line ended a long time ago, Shiv is probably the last proper test bat, and he debuted in 1994. Their cricket is in a shithouse state, and its not just the team itself- the grounds are just awful, the wickets are either low and slow or dead flat, the board is a bunch of dickheads, the selectors have no idea. Cant see any of the lower ranked teams (WI, NZ , Pak, Aus) beating any of India, SA, or England.

As a west indies supporter you are correct especially about the board. The WICB is a pathetic, corrupt and incompetent organization that did nothing to plan for the future when WI cricket began it's decline in the 90's. It could have been different and still can be different if only the organization is better. The grounds are not so bad but WI cricket has serious problems that won't be going away anytime soon.

Debate of Sachin vs Lara against McGrath... McGrath Owned him in this series. It Took Lara 10 Innings to score his only century. 6 vs McGrath and 3 vs Warne Sachin had Hundreds all his tours to Australia apart from his last one. Laras ODI Record is better than Sachin in Austrlia.. But Sachin made up for it in 2007-08 Season winning the finals with great twin knocks And faced more Rampant Fleming and Gillespie at their peaks. If Sachin had backup like Walsh, Bishop and Ambrose, his 100s would seem rather invincible.. Given that it took a rather innocouous 6/41 by Agarkar that won a Test for India. None of the seamers could get such Fifers for India. Just Highlights how big a thorn Sachin would have been in Australia, had he had more penetrating Seam Attach than just Srinath

Yet Lara continues to average 41.4 against McGrath on a one-to-one basis even after 15 dismissals, thats 621 runs against McGrath alone, or even better 21% of his total run tally against Australia, 27% in tests featuring McGrath. Besides, McGrath has already given his verdict that Lara was the best batsman he bowled to. Sachin was Warne's favourite.

@lenestor Catch hold of every worthless politician running the WICB and club them to death. Next instate men of honour and passion like Holding, Walsh and Roberts to conduct the board affairs. Third, quit giving a damn about what the BCCI instructs you to do. I was seething with rage to note that the timings of the ongoing Indian tour matches were adjusted to suit Indian TV viewers! WTF?? With such attitude from the show-runners, no wonder the West Indian youth doesn't care about cricket.
