1995 Hyundai S Coupe - Korea's first sports car Goes For a Drive

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Hyundai S Coupe of 1990 might not have had a big impact in Europe, it was massively important for the Korean company, as their first 2 door coupe, sports car or home grown engine.

I bought one of these, 1.5 turbo, about 2008 for £300, only needed one fuse to get going. had a k&n filter, dump valve, boost turned up and stainless exhaust. took it to the 999 challenge and was an awesome little track car. made 120bhp on the dyno

5 brake increase from stock after them mods? Deffo not worth the effort in my eyes but then again this plonker spent 3k keeping on the road in a 18m period. Then traded it in towards a f@&£”1ng fiat.

@dieterking6781 not sure who you mean but I didn't trade it for a fiat and spent £300 in total Inc buying it. The mods where on the car when I bought it and the 120 was atthe wheels.

At least here in the U.S., it's actually the Scoupe (pronounced "scoop"), not the S Coupe. And you're missing out on the joy of the automatic "mad mouse" shoulder belts that the U.S. version had. 🙂

I looked at one of these new in 1993. We pronounced it as “scoop”. I liked the styling then and now. I was attached to the turbo but had a look at the base car as it was cheap. I have to say, My initial impression was the opposite to yours. The thing I remember most is how the inner door pull was make in 2 hard plastic sections that creaked and flexed whenever I closed the door. It felt like it was about to break on a brand new car. It felt rather hum drum to drive. I didn’t buy it. I haven’t seen one of these in decades. Great to see such a nice example.

Matt you legend! I had one of these as my second car in 2001! N plate too except mine had been attacked by the dealer and was an SE model. It had dealer fit side skirts, 90s as all hell decals down the sides, 14" alloys, fog lights, twin pipe exhaust and a MOMO wheel with proper Hyundai horn button. 5 speed manual in red. It handled really well but it was not reliable at all strangely. I miss it though, as a 19 year old it was cool! I have a couple of polaroids somewhere...Thanks for bringing back memories!

This car was sold by Anglia Car Auctions in Norfolk (I watched it go through and was very tempted to bid) it then went to a dealer in Essex who presumably couldn't move it. Shame it hasn't sold because it is now very rare - especially in this condition. It was a one owner lady owner car that came from a Hyundai dealer in Essex (Haddocks Hyundai).

Had the 1.5 Turbo in the 90s. It could reach 60mph in 8 seconds no problem. You really felt the turbo kick in. Pretty rapid for its time. I was stopped twice whilst driving by people who offered me cash to buy the car off me. I think there are only about 5 left on the road in UK.

A friend had one of these back in the day, and I ridiculed him like mad because I thought the car a bit of a joke. Then he lent it me for a couple of days whilst my Rover 214i was in for a repair, and I stopped laughing because it's actually a damn fine car. Well put together and lovely to drive. Not better than the Rover, but as good as, and from me, that's very high praise. Great to see one again after all these years.

Once again an interesting car that I don't think I've ever seen on the road. Really nice exterior design and I absolutely love the rear end styling with the floating roof and wraparound tail lights. Even the spoiler is quite tasteful. The interior is pretty basic, but not unattractive. The engine sounds maybe a bit rough to me but otherwise a lovely car. Thanks for the interesting review!

This is the last car I would expect to find on review! Like many of the commenters here I had a 1992 pre facelift S Coupe in brilliant red. It was my first nice car, after 7 years of driving assorted bangers and beaters. I'd agree, it is a special car- frugal (35 American miles per gallon), practical , reliable, and comfortable. And when new, cheap to buy. Thanks for highlighting this forgotten gem!

I actually scrapped one of these a few years ago, was mechanically great, but bodily challenged. I tried to sell it for a good 2 years, & there were no takers, even at scrap money, in fact one guy said I was asking too much, even though I literally had it at scrap money, went on to tell me he wanted to fit a bigger engine & would have to come over 30 miles to pick it up, so wanted to pay a third of the scrap price, so being thoroughly fed up dealing with idiots like that, + paying tax & insurance on a car I never used, I did the only sane thing, I stripped it & binned the rest.. Sad, as theres less than 10 in the UK on the road, & now theres one less, despite my best efforts to get it saved. Worth pointing out, there are rear speakers in the parcel shelf, & the high level brake light on the spoiler had no bulb holder or wiring fitted, as it wasn't a legal requirement in the UK at that point, but they didn't want to fit a unique to the UK lightless spoiler..

When I was in sixth form one of the female students was given one of these when her Dad couldn’t get much for it at trade-in. It was bright red and the earlier pre-facelift version. At the time it was seen as a bit naff; the automotive equivalent of a Sega Master System when the PlayStation had come along. The owner fully leaned into this and played synth-pop and other ‘80s tunes on the stereo. I can vividly remember two occasions when she rocked up in the car park playing Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and Tiffany’s “I think we’re alone now”, windows down, shades on. Her general attitude of “I know it’s a bit old and off-brand, but I’ve been given it and I just love it” attitude made that car seem very cool to me. It’s probably affected my thinking about cars too - don’t keep up with the Joneses, just find a car that makes you happy. Sadly, this happy little car was written off when a logging wagon (many, many tonnes of logging wagon) ploughed into the back of it. All the occupants (on a lunchtime run to Maccy D’s, as far as I recall) were unharmed. The ‘80s cassette tape collection from the S Coupe were transferred to the Mk2 Astra that replaced it (an Antibes special edition), and the retro vibe continued.

At least in my part of the US - mid-Atlantic, it was the Scoupe (scoop). Test drove one when we didn't have much money, probbly a 91. Just couldn't take it seriously, even with the stick. Affordable yes, but oh, so much a secretary-mobile. It had pretensions, but nothing to back it up. ended up with a pint sized sedan with 'handling by Lotus' (it did handle decently too - but rode like a go kart) and 130 hp on tap, rapid-ish for the assigned task. Bet no one can guess what it was - they sold vanishingly few, though once in a blue moon I'll still see one; usually in sad condition, and usually not the better trimmed higher horsepower one we selected. Also - in the US, we can't be bothered 3 syllables for Hyundai - Hunday, rhymes with Sunday....

It's a long time since I've seen an S Coupe. Being an N registration I'm guessing this must be a pretty late one. My dad test drive the smaller Accent coupe (which really was a three door hatch) and the cars seemed like good solid cars and showed that Hyundai had potential. He ended up with a 96 N' reg Mégane coupe but I do remember going to look at the Hyundai Coupe when they launched. I think those may have been marketed as a Lantra or Elantra Coupe at some point.

The looks: an Excel on steroids. WOW! The engine; is that a G4EA engine, I wonder. I have one of those in my car. Not a powerhouse, but an absolute workhorse. The inside; hmm .. I'd love to have those stalks. A 2005 Hyundai Accent has the same, but shorter. The fabric of the seats are cheap looking, but are no-nonsense. Clean them easily, rip them never. I believe Hyundai-Kia did cooperations with Japanese companies to develop their cars, mainly Mitsubishi. The back end gives me the vibes from older, earlier model Lancers. I wanted to have a Coupé, with the V6 (the 'successor' to Tiburon). Guess I won't be having it, since they just became so rare, none want to touch them. Thanks for the presentation Matt, it was an excellent form of entertainment for the afternoon :) Also; is there any chance for you to get behind the wheel of the original Veloster?

I have two turbos …and I do keep telling people they are nowhere near as bad as is made out !! I use mine as daily’s , but you are correct in the fact only single figures remain roadworthy and this can make for serious difficulties when it comes to everyday use . Many parts are unavailable and this often leads to issues . They simply don’t exist anymore . The turbo is a much better car on the power front the difference being chalk and cheese . I’ve converted both of mine to rear discs but the drums are ok. You often find yourself converting to lantra stuff and some pony bits fit too. They are very very prone to rusting and it’s all over and often proves terminal . Once it starts it spreads rapidly. They are cheap to run, and cheap to maintain but as stated it’s getting the parts that’s the issue . There are rear speakers (back shelf) and the high level brake lights were never wired in the uk . If you find one and want one snap it up

My dad had a white one of these, must have been early 90s, he got it as a company car. It was pretty good tbh. It looked the part, most of the time people would come up to him and ask him what make it was lol!!!

They were called Scoupe in America, one word. I was little so I never drove one, but most of the reviews said it wasn't as good as its competitors, especially the Japanese.

There were plenty of these Hyundai S Coupes sokd in Australia l remember them been every were and this video brought memories of tgere been so many of them around there are none left at all there all gone l suppose they all broke down with major problems but on the other hand there are plenty of 1990s Toyotas still driving around both Camerys and Corollas and Coranas plenty of those for sale also Toyotas from the 1970s 1980s and the 1990s still advertised for sale no Kias or Hyundais and l own a 1990s Toyota myself a Hilux and its still going the main reason Toyotas are extremly reliable snd popular no okd Kias and Hyundais there all gone they have just disappeared gone and the main reason people get rid of there the engine and gearbox and it cost o lot of money to repsair them

I am surprised you never saw one. I live in the east of the netherlands and saw several Scoupe's. Disappearing from the streets now I fear.

Matt, your comment about the speedy rate of improvement of Hyundai/Kia cars is well made. I inherited a first iteration Sonata as a company car. At the time the next generation had just appeared, I took my Sonata in for a service and I was offered the new model as a courtesy car. I was highly impressed to find that everything I'd found to be less than top rate had been corrected in the next version. Also, reliable electrics are very important in my book, especially having owned certain German cars, and Hyundai did this right from Day 1. Thanks for another fine video.
