It's been said that this game, along with the Fiesta Bowl blowout loss to Colorado earlier that year, are what caused Lou Holtz to realize they couldn't compete with the powerhouse teams that ran NFL style offenses and to tell the administration they needed to soften their academic standards for football players if they wanted to contend for championships. When they refused it was the beginning of the end.

Wrong they allowed players in that were not the typical academic students. Tony rice and Chris zorich were prop 48 students it was when Kevin white became the ad and stopped allowing those type of players in notre dame and he and holtz did not see eye to eye on a lot of things that made holtz leave

The image for this post is the cover of NCAA College Gamebraker for playstation. I still have and I still play that classic game. Eddie George and David Boston are beasts on it.

Being from Columbus, OH and an avid Buckeyes' fan since the mid 1960s, watching clips from the early to mid '90s just reminded me how awful Bobby Hoying was and how lame the Ohio State QBs were then! Ohio State has never (as I recall) put an elite QB in the NFL but has sure had some excellent QBs in their illustrious program, most of which began during Jim Tressel's tenure as Head Coach! Watching Hoying in this game is all but brutal!

In my opinion the reason why we have lost most of our big games over the years is the lack of good qb play.

@@bbkyjohnson - I'm not sure I totally agree! I'm 66 and remember way back to the Woody Hayes era - Ohio State was always noted for possessing powerhouse defenses with offenses just good enough to win! Throughout the Earl Bruce and John Cooper years, the QB position was nothing short of mediocre! Jim Tressell changed that and ever since, the Buckeyes have had great QBs (even though there haven't been any of them who went on to have good NFL careers! The defense has been the letdown! In the recent past Ohio State has had one or two standout defensive players but as a unit, less than mediocre! The number of points our defense has given up over the past decade or so is shameful!

I find it hard to blame the defense in recent years. It’s such an open offensive game now. It’s so hard to stop teams that can spread the field and mobile qbs and such. I think we got spoiled due to our league being so run heavy for years. Our defense last year was not up to what I’d like. Tressel only had 2 good qbs in my opinion and he still didn’t use either as much as he should have. Smith and Pryor should have been use just like cam newton in college.

He definitely deserves more credit than he gets for the run we had in that game for the last 25 years. The way his time ended unfortunately tarnished his legacy and it shouldn’t have. Comparing what was going on compared to manziel it was a ridiculous decision. Fortunately it made the program better which a lot of times doesn’t happen when you change coaching. Even considering the cooper era the program has been extremely good for a long time.
