1993 All Star Game VS. 2024 Overtime Battle Game

Ойын-сауық

The 1993 All Star Game used for comparison against a “high intensity” 2024 NBA game.
In a sideline interview during this game Michael Jordan said that things will speed up as everyone gets tired. Interesting. What’s that mean? How can it be explained? Angry Old Hoops gives his take using visual examples and “real world” examples.

• 1993 All Star Game Full
Oh, the good ol' days of talented artists like Boys 2 Men singing the national anthem. Several All Star Caliber big men on the court doing battle under the rim. Everyone hustling. Everyone playing D. No constant complaining, no constant game stoppages for ticky tack fouls, no constant stoppages for reviews. In other words there was no time to catch your breath. You had to be in better shape back then.

What's funny is you constantly hear how better skilled new players are and to some degree that's true on a technical level but that only goes so far. The shear endurance and drive to win these players had combined with how they'd surely adapt to the modern playstyle would be a serious wakeup call. At the end of the day it's the motivation and drive to get the job done that makes all the difference. Hell, that's one of the main reasons Rodman was so key despite appearing to lack fundamental skills that fans today would laugh at. That guy gave 120% every game, risking bodily injury for loose balls and rebounds most players wouldn't even bother going for. You won't find that mindset on a stat sheet but it can make all the difference when it comes down to the line.

@JJFX- well there's a difference between shooting around in a gym or practice and actually producing with this relentless defense on you. Moreover, 90s players were less skilled overall but that was because defensive specialists were needed. If you were good enough to lock down jordan or shaq, nobody gave a fuck if you only put up 10 ppg. Jordan or shaq would be averaging 50 in this era while opposing teams would be held under 100 because they would slow the pace and control the game.

I played AAU high-school through college early 2000s...What we're seeing in the NBA today is literally AAU/YMCA style ball. In terms of effort and endurance between that style and the "real" game of old there is a MASSIVE jump in conditioning required. To play an average college game back then 30+ minutes required about three months straight of hellish conditioning drills. Two a day practices finished with lengthy sprints until you felt like puking was normal followed by weight training. My resting heart rate mid-season was 37. ANY sort of dogging in practice on defense was immediately singled out. One lazy close out/rotation and the coaches would stop the entire practice to shame the shit out of you. Sprints...But not for you. For everyone else. Do it during a game and you're on the bench immediately. Keep doing it, you're off the team. Happened to our best scorer mid season..Film sessions dissecting every single move you made...this was the norm everywhere. Nevermind the extra wear and tear that puts on the body. AOH is 100%...these dudes today would be ran out of the gym inside of five minutes

Wow…. You’re are spot on with your critique. I played AAU starting in late 1992 thru early 96. The conditioning by itself was agonizing. You’d be hard pressed to find a player in the league today who’s played 70 or more games in a season more than twice. Look at Joel Embiid, for example…. The most games he’s ever played in a season is 68. If you count his first two seasons in the league, 2014-15, and 2015-16, which he didn’t play because of injury, he averages 43 games played a season. If you take out those first two seasons, he’s averaging 54 games a season. A “superstar”, by today’s standards, who’s never played a complete season….. enough said.

gotta love nostalgia. Lebron, Curry, KD, Giannis, Luka and Jokic will all most likely finish their careers as top 20-25 players of all time. Along with young players like Shai, ant and Haliburton that could make it if they have playoff success like a couple rings which isn't that far fetched. You talk about who's guarding shaq, ok fair, who's guarding Jokic, downlow shaq can handle him, but Jokic can run offense up top too, shaq, as good as he is isn't a good perimeter defender. A lineup of luka, lebron, kd, giannis and jokic is just as difficult to guard as a lineup of stockton, mj, wilkens, robinson and shaq.

@@nflwatcher2281 A lot these guys are putting up numbers that are inflated because they are shooting literally 8-10x the amount of three pointers that players did in the 80s and around 4x the amount that they did in the 90s. And no, it's not that suddenly everyone has learned how to shoot, despite the explosion in 3s 3 point % hasn't exploded. Teams averaged around 34% from deep in the 90s and that has gone up to around 35-36% today. It's simply an explosion in volume, and the style of play, the way the rules are enforced, etc... it's leading to some seriously inflated scoring, rebounding and assist numbers. The lane is so wide open today, a guy like Giannis who really am not sure is any better than Barkley or David Robinson, puts up massive numbers. I have much more faith the elite players from the late 80s and 90s could fit in to the current game than vice versa. Steph for a large part of his career wasn't even considered an elite player. It wasn't until 3pt shooting startet to baloon to over 25attempts per game that he started to become a star. Steph didn't "change" the game, he was the beneficieary of a trend towards 3pt shooting that started in the late 80s and never stopped. Imagine Reggie, or Bird, or even Mark Price if they played in a league where close to half of all shots were 3pt attempts, extrapolate their numbers and they would be ridiculous, Reggie and Price would both perennially be in the 25-30 ppg range, and Bird would be putting up AT LEAST Doncic like numbers in the NBA today, with infinitely better defense.

Youre spot on. And I always say the reason teams today get away with shooting reckless 3s these days is defenses are too low bball IQ and lazy to make teams pay on long misses. I was watching the gm 4 of 97 finals where Stockton made MJ and the Bulls pay big time on a long MJ jumper with a full court pass to Malone for a bucket that put the Bulls away in crunch time. And that was off a long MJ shot that wasnt reckless. I cant imagine what that Jazz team would do to a reckless shooting team. Frankly teams today wouldnt be a able to play with cerebral teams like the Jazz. Hornecak was damn good. And Stockton imo is the greatest PG to ever play. He's just so heady, and unassumingly physical. Anyone trying to downplay Stockton is clueless when it comes to bball.

If it wasn't for the Nuggets, or some of these younger teams who still have the passion to prove themselves, I would have no reason to watch the NBA anymore. Which is sad. Growing up during the 90's in Indiana as a Pacers fan and just seeing how quickly the league has devolved is disheartening. The game is such a watered down version of what he once was. And worst of all, I don't see any actual way it gets marginally better. There are way too many factors as to why its a worse version of what it used to be, that it would be nearly impossible to turn it around.

You made a very good and important point that a lot of people probably missed, especially younger people who watch the game today and believe Lebron is the strongest player ever in the NBA. Honestly, i knew something was wrong with the NBA the year Carmelo, Wade, and Lebron were drafted. All of them were young but, they had what i call the "soft body". Meaning, they had no muscle definition so you could tell they didn't do a lot of cardio work nor had a lot of endurance. Wade out of the three probably had the best endurance. A lot of players today are built for show, a lot of the players from the 80's and 90's were built for go. Most of the players from the 80's and 90's looked like strong swimmers, all of them were tall, strong, and ripped. Examples of the best in shape NBA players from the 80's and 90's would be Kemp, Pippen, Jordan, David Robinson, Clyde Drexler, Adrian Dantley, etc. They had an insane amount of endurance and speed and like you said, someone like Shawn Kemp dunking with the ferocity he had, would certainly break the arm of the NBA players of today. Thanks for the videos!

Another reminder, Shawn Kemp was blasted frequently for NOT being in-shape (and then famously showed up 35 lbs overweight in 99, but that was just the tail end of a long battle with eating his way out of the league). You have guys drafted in the 90s who dominated the 00s who couldn't do anything during the 90s themselves. The Kobe/Shaq Lakers were getting swept by an old Jazz team. Bruce Bowen for example was drafted in 93 and couldn't even make it in the league. He only started having success in the 00-01 season at the age of 29. Teams like the Heat, Knicks, Pacers and Bulls would absolutely abuse the lack of effort and physicality - and heart - of modern NBA teams.

Here’s something that happened the other night in the Knick game the other team had a fast break with no one back on D well Duece McBride hustled full speed and put a Hard foul on the guy and he missed the layup but went to the line to shoot 2 free throws and missed both foul shots and the game announcers did explain why that was a great play not only did he miss both shots but he psychologically got in the guys head Meaning next time he is on a fast break he’s gonna think a Hard foul may be coming and may make him hesitate and that may alter the shot IMO!

When Kobe won in 09 and 10. For example Lakers and Boston. Defense was good there. And the other day 2011 finals video was good. Even then the game was way better than today. They actually called Lebrons double dribbles. Also you could do the 04 finals. In game 3 pistons held the Lakers at 68. Do like finals every 5-10 years so we can compare the game, and pinpoint when exactly did it all went down the toilet.

Been saying this for the past few years. The NBA is essentially REC BALL. It's a glorified free shootaround. It's what kids did during Gym period in going to the 3 point line and seeing how many they could make in a row. Of course people could shoot 3s back then but you had specialists who shot them like Reggie Miller, Glenn Rice, Mark Price, and Chuck Person. You actually had position basketball where now everyone plays like a two 2guard and stands out on the perimeter.
