1992 Chevrolet Silverado Transformation! From Junk to Jewel! Daily Driver OBS SWB Build!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I snagged this 1992 Chevrolet Silverado regular cab shortbed 2WD rig up down in Oklahoma during our Puddin's Fab Shop visit. It was sitting abandoned on a front yard so I knocked on the door and was able to strike up a deal with the owners. They said it had run recently but was no longer running and that it needed some TLC. Lets see if we can't get it running and make it worthy of a Mortske Repair daily driver pickup! Thanks for watching!

If it has a new ignition coil on it, count your blessings. I don't think they go out often on these type of system but if they do, you might be in for an interesting time. We had a Hyster forklift come into our shop for a starter issue years ago. It had a 3.0L GM 4 banger but same type of ignition system you have here. The thing would start cold okay but as the engine warmed up, she'd pop and backfire like crazy. After she warmed up, that thing would kick back really bad when you'd start it like it was out of time. It actually kicked back so bad that we broke the nose cone on the starter. Lucky for me the pieces were close enough to the starter hole to fish them out without separating the engine from the bell housing. We monkeyed with timing. I didn't realize at the time that the pickup module compensates timing or I would've probably concluded the problem sooner. We knew it wasn't the pickup because when they quit, the engine dies. Anyhow, on a whim, we replaced the coil and the problem went away. I'm guessing the pickup module was trying to adjust timing for a coil that was failing and that's how we got the gunshot backfiring and kickback starts. I don't think I'll ever forget that experience. Enjoy your Okie truck.

32:15 those pickup coils are known to go bad, either just flat dead and no spark or it can cause running issues. For timing, by the power block and fuel pump relay on the passenger side of the firewall, there's a single wire connector with a tan wire with a black stripe, that's the ignition bypass lead, when you unplug it, it puts the module in base time. You can then set the timing. Timing for those was 10° btdc

I have a 94 K1500 standard cab short bed I bought used in 96 in Richmond Va. It came with a dealer installed chip disable style security system. The only time I ever pulled that chip was when I had to work in DC, and that was only a few times. We moved from Quantico Va. to Camp Pendleton Ca. Never pulled that chip again. I still own the truck. Poor truck sat allot as we lived over seas for many years. It has 365.875 on the odometer now and I am fixing it up for the C10 shows. The GMT 400 is the best pickup made in my opinion. Edit: When I walked onto that lot eyeballing that truck, The dealer must have done a backflip seeing a young Marine with a pocket full of cash. 18000 is all it had on it. I paid cash and walked out with a truck that out lasted my marriage. Out side my kids, Best decision of my life.

Many miles in a TBI chevy. I believe that sensor you showed was a knock sensor. One problem had on mine was PVC line plugged up and caused Crankcase pressure to build and would push oil out rear main. Cleaned the TBI base plate and solved oil leak. 240k on the engine and transmission never missed a beat while I was stationed at Grand Forks AFB.

Hi from the uk. Hello Mortske and Duff. Superb video and fun to watch. It looks like a great and useful truck. I think that it would look better with a decent paint job and a nice picture of Duff airbrushed on the hood. It appears to be in great solid condition. Again another enjoyable video. Stay safe and well. Cheers Chris.

Mortske just use the brake switch for your cruise control. It has the opposite function open circuit vs closed circuit. But you can use a 5 pin relay for that. When you close the circuit for braking it will engage the relay to open the circuit which you can use for your cruise control. Very simple actually.

At present Im parting out 16 of those square cab Chevy and GMC pickups. They tend to be rust buckets even here in Arkansas. However I have a 86 GMC cab thats 100% rust free. Ive only had two rust free square body cabs . I sold a chevy 3/4 ton rust free cab last year. I can realize more money by junking a square cab than by trying to sell a running truck. Especially if it a long bed hardly anyone wants a long bed.. I use the front crossmembers under the 60 thru 70 trucks to convert to 5 lug front disk brakes. I prefer the older GMC frames because they came with rear leaf springs and a 73 & newer rear end will work and you can get 5 lugs & a more desirable gear ratio. My wrecker is a 82 -3/4 ton. It has a 305 and turbo 400 trans. Im just finishing a engine install in my 71 -3/4. the original 402 dropped a valve. so now its a 454. It will soon be my wrecker and my 82 will bite the dust.My self I wouldnt repair a rusty square cab even if you gave me the patch panels for free.

You can time those trucks, under that relay cover or by the glove box, you'll find a tan wire with a black tracer, it'll have a plug on it, un plug it, that bypasses the timing that the computer gives it, set it at 0 degrees then lock it down, plug the wire back in, clear the code it sets and your good to go, I've had tbi trucks my whole life

Diagonal Cutters are what we called them. Does it have a bad distributor main shaft? Back in the day we'd see these where they wouldn't keep timing or no start hot or at all times. Same goes for the pick up coil and module. GM's fix under warranty rebuild the distributor, install a new pickup/mainshaft/module. There should be a wire along the firewall (brown single wire comes to mind); disconnect to set initial timing. Reconnect, shut off, clear code. Bobs your uncle it runs like new. Occasionally we'd see a bad coil, typically on higher mileage units. Love the videos and the channel! Rock-On, Mortske!
