Tommy Kendall holds the distinction of being the first American driver to ever finish the Bathurst 1000 race in Australia. In 1996 he raced for Dick Johnson (who drove some Winston Cup races in a #38 Ford Thunderbird in 1989-90) and teaming with Dick's son Steven, they finished 8th. Dick Johnson Racing is currently co-owned by Roger Penske. The list of Americans who'd tried and failed at Bathurst previously includes Johnny Rutherford, Janet Guthrie, Sam Posey, Dick Barbour, Rodney Combs, Bob Tullius and John Andretti. Only Scott Pruett who finished 11th in 1997 has joined Kendall as an American finisher in the event.

If you look real close you'll see 4 year old me as a wee-lad in turn 7. Still remember this race, got my shirt signed by Michael Waltrip and got to sit in that bright yellow Penzoil Machine. Davey and that Thunderchicken were my hero. That bein said, rubbins racing! Wish I got to see him tango with Gordon before his unfortunate helo crash. Great upload, crazy to see how much the track has changed.

I remember watching this on tv when I was 7, running to the garage to tell my dad what was happening. It’s great to be able to watch it again with the original commentary. Everybody knew what they saw live…it’s why the booth reacted like they did. The guy in second dive bombed it and took the leader out. I think what nascar did was more of a message to the guy in the black 3 than the guy who did it but…Dover had had a lot of bumper banging the week before this and I think the rooster just did this at the wrong time.

I'm a lifelong Petty Fan & had been yelling "Please get out of the car Richard" since the end of the 86 season! So you can imagine my reaction to The King's scary looking crash! 😳!!🤢 As for the end of the race, I didn't have a dog in that fight & had/have a ton of respect for both driver's, but Nascar's ruling on the incident was 💩🤮 nuff said.

In addition to the controversy over the finish and the vicious crash suffered by the King; there was also a bizarre postscript involving another member of the Alabama Gang; Hut Stricklin. Stricklin's mobile home was ransacked and vandalized during the race, including the theft of a camcorder that had inside of it a videotape of his son Taylor from the time he was born until 1991.

After seeing the spin at the end, I agree that the black flag shouldn't have been waved. Dave Marcis (the lap car behind Rudd & Allison) saw the spin & claimed it was just hard racing. I'd have to agree with Marcis's statement. Ricky Rudd should've won

I would be embarrassed to celebrate a win gave to me. Not that he can be now, but should be ashamed. That win shouldve went to Rudd. Bumpin is racing and in all my 52 years I have never seen this before or since. They basically gave the win away. Now, look at Nascar in 2019, Want be long they will be in the past, they are dying a slow deserved death. They took rascing away from the roots and made it all about coorperations and money, now all the TRUE fans are gone.. Bye Bye Nascar.

On June 10, 1991, GMA Radio-Television Arts witnessed the penalty that Ricky Rudd costed his 1991 Banquet Frozen Foods 300 victory at the Sonoma Raceway. This race was produced by SilverStar Communications, Inc. and aired via tape delay at 2:30 P.M. right after Goodyear NASCAR Today With Rico Hizon & Bobby Guanzon

You & your two other commenters are clearly wrong! Rudd clearly meant to take Davy out for the win! Nascar made the right call! The other two clearly didn’t watch the race in 99 at Bristol & know nothing about us Earnhardt fans! When Terry made the pass on Dale, it was far from clean! Dale was just letting Terry know what he thought about that & Terry spun out! Us Earnhardt fans were not booing because we know what really happened! If you noticed, no driver or NASCAR said ANYTHING after watching the actual replay because they saw what Terry did first! Only Earnhardt haters continue to blame Dale without mentioning Terry’s move!

It's a joke. Remember there was no black flag when Dale Sr spun Terry Labonte years later on the last lap at Bristol. So NASCAR for years and years has always been so inconsistent. I think Rudd should have won this race. However since NASCAR decided to give him the black flag than they should have been more consistent in the future. That was my point.

Hard to agree with the penalty unless you're committed to the Allisons. Unprecedented penalty; why wasn't Gordon penalised for spinning Kenseth (deliberately) at Chicago in 2006? Or Logano for wrecking (deliberately) Hamlin at California in 2013? And so on, and so on; unique officiating.

HAHA! Take that Ricky. Although I have a ton of respect for his toughness and durability, he deserved that penaly and had a penchant for pulling cheap stunts like that, like he did in Wilkesboro in 1989. There is a reason he never won the Winston Cup, cause he wasn't good enough.
