    I make this same comment on all of these old races. This has got to be the best announcing team I've ever heard for any sport. Ned Jarrett and Benny Parsons are just perfect for this. Both of them so knowledgeable and so classy. Bob Jenkins is fantastic at keeping the viewer updated to the race but always subordinates himself to the more knowledgeable members. It's a wonderful dynamic they all had

    Yes I agree. I don’t understand why Dodge wasn’t in Nascar during the 80’s & 90’s with Dodge/Plymouth dominating back in the 50’s,60’s & 70’s with especially Richard Petty where 191 of his 200 wins were in a dodge or Plymouth.

    Yet just a few laps after he rejoined and the field caught him, he and Lake Speed badly held up Rusty Wallace which caused a traffic jam that saw a lot of damage to Rick Mast's Oldsmobile when he spun Ken Schrader. But then, that's Bristol isn't it. There wasn't really anywhere Earnhardt and Speed could go. And technically they were doing the right thing staying low and trying to let everyone else go by on the outside. However, Rusty had decided to try and pass low when in reality he should have gone high which is really what triggered the whole episode. No one was really at fault, its just what happens on a short track with the leaders coming up on slow traffic.

    Here after the 54 lead changes from Sunday's nutty spring Bristol race. This race was referenced for the previous high of 40 lead changes, and there were a lot of similarities between these two races. Odd (and thankfully short-lived) pitting rules, track surfacing issues, and unpredictable weather. Folks forget that Bristol was having track surface issues in 1990 and 1991, and that ultimately led to the installation of concrete for 1992.

  • @gth804f

    @gth804f

    4 ай бұрын

    They had these pit rules because a guy had just gotten killed in the pits in 1990, and there were a couple of other incidents that same season where pit crew members had gotten badly injured. There was also still no pit road speed limit. NASCAR was still in the process at this time of trying to figure out how to make pit road safer. People bitch about the pit road speeding penalties; apparently they are okay with guys getting hurt and killed in the pits.

    Pretty sure they posted this to make a subtle point about "wow everyone bitchin' about rule changes like we havent done them forever" in reference to the even/odd car pitting. However this rule change is understandable as it was in response to safety concerns following the death of a crew member from Bill Elliott's team in 1990, Mike Rich. And this rule change has a minimal impact on competition unless you spin out on pit road, which doesn't happen very often in the first place.

    stupid story about this race, I was at my grandfathers watching it, (we didn't have cable) and it was under rain delay and I think Rusty Wallace was down 2 laps and had just made them up and I just figured the race was over and it wouldn't restart, it was literally pouring down rain but they didn't show it in this video. I left and went home, well the next day I pick up the paper and found that Rusty won the race, and I never really knew how he managed to do it but it looks like the stupid pit rules for this race really helped him out once the race got going again

    I'm a Rusty Wallace fan, but boy did he benefit from that late race odd-even restart after the rain. Basically went from 7th to 1st without passing another car simply because he happened to be the first in line of the odd cars and got to go to the restart basically on pole position. Under normal circumstances he would have been 7th (and last) in line on the outside with all the lapped cars on the inside, so essentially he would have been 14th on the restart grid. Instead he lined up in first place and won the race.
