This might be the greatest single song performance in metal history. The overloaded audio, Rock God vibe, perfect musical execution, the dystopian environment in the crowd with the military-civilian clashes, the people living under a regime that truly was "harvesters of sorrow". 1:49 All day...
This is just primal rage of the first order. So authentic, so heavy. A great live version of this song.
The dystopian environment at the time of this concert is exactly the thing that makes this concert very metal. This took place during the dissolution of the Soviet Union and you have military personnel clashing with civilians that will rock hard no matter who the fuck opposes them and Metallica realizes that and as a result , gives them the energy they desperately deserve which creates one of the greatest performances ever imaginable…. wtf was this concert? Every waking second of it was a blast of chills for me. James voice mimicked the studio version, Jason’s headbanging is literally the soul of Metallica, Lars KILLED the drums harder than he ever has and even Kirk was headbanging (something he never does). What a show man.
When they finally drop the main riff... That's fuckin sick
The overloaded audio 😍 This is INSANE
I FUC*ING LOVE THIS VIDEO !!!!

There is no better performance of Harvey. The purity of the aggression in this rendition is unrivaled, in a song that's already thunderously aggressive. When the remastered Black Album came out and the Moscow '91 concert was part of the bonus tracks, I immediately replaced Harvey and Creeping Death in my playlists with the renditions from this concert because they're so good. Pure, unbridled rage and musical power.
Harvester of Sorrow and One are my two fav tracks from And Justice For All. This live performance is killer!
The anthem for the fall of the USSR. I remember seeing this for the first time. I couldn't believe it was real. It was like they were playing on some other post-apocalyptic pirate planet. Turns out that was just the collapsing USSR.
This kind of performance, band, setting, etc. only happens once in a generation. Everything was just so perfect during the black album tour. The best part of this one for me is at 3:53 when he growls and then just goes nuts.

I was at this concert, I was then in my second year studying in college, what groups were there and I don’t remember, I went to METALLICA, it was a complete blowout, Broom - we remembered listening to it at home and in urgent company back in 86, when it was openly that the pioneers and Komsomol members did not approve of the blah)) which did not stop us from drawing her name through a stencil on the back of the padded jacket)) on the trashed cassettes on Elektronika 302 with the batteries crumpled into the trash, it arose that this way they would work a little longer)) and instead rewinding after wiretapping, I used a pencil, the film broke, you nicked the nail lag from your mother or older sister, glued the film and listened again, and here is BROOM live in Moscow, my whole world turned upside down with emotions then...))) you can checkout my channel i do metal too)

Don't get me wrong, I love Metallica. Saw them last year and it was great, but.....the anger and aggression, the pure brutality from this era is gone. Having seen them then, and seeing them now, there is a difference. They aren't as loud either. I remember not being able to hear much after the concert in 1991, and thinking the volume had been much less in 2020. We are all getting older I suppose, and I will see them again and again for sure, but I miss this era.

I'm not a musician but after the Black Album tours, they changed their live sound from James's style of singing (James's voice was busted so he needed to start singing as opposed to screaming), their guitar tuning (again because James's voice was busted so they needed to change the tuning to match the vocals) to Lars's drumkit (his shoulder has issues). It's not just the age issue but that's a big part of it. Lars has been asked how long they will go for and he notes that an 80 year old Bob Dylan keeps going but Bob Dylan doesn't play Metallica songs.

I saw Metallica for the first time in 2003, and even then I had this feeling of "the best time to see them has already long passed, they'll never again sound the way they did in the 80s-early 90s." I still went and enjoyed them nonetheless, and it's still pretty remarkable how great of a show they can put on despite their age.
