$175,000 SHOWBOAT INVITATIONAL
Showboat Bowling Center, Las Vegas, Nev., Jan 3-9, 1988
Monacelli Wins Vegas Gamble
There can be no further speculation as to Amleto Monacelli's claim to stardom on the PBA Tour following his triumph in the $175,000 Showboat Invitational. Venezuela's Monacelli earned the $33,000 first prize by topping leading qualifier Mark Roth, 216-189, completely altering his style of play during his three championship round games.
The popular Monacelli is known for his wide-bending strike ball and unorthodox delivery, but he tossed "pocket rockets" straight up lanes 59 and 60 at Showboat Bowling Center during the championship round. Roth, Spring Lake Heights, N.J., matched Monacelli with an opening strike, two spares and a double through the fifth frame. Monacelli added another strike in his sixth frame and Roth spared twice and then left the 2-10 split in his eighth from which he never recovered.
CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
Pos. Name, City/State Total Amount
1 Amleto Monacelli, Venezuela 597 (3 games) $33,000
2 Mark Roth, Spring Lake Heights, N.J. 189 (1 game) 17,000

4 Gip Lentine, Rowland Heights, Calif. 343 (2 games) 7,000
5 Walter Ray Williams Jr. Stockton, Calif. 189 (1 game) 6,000
PLAYOFF RESULTS - Lentine defeated W. Williams, 190-189; Monacelli defeated Lentine, 163-153 Monacelli defeated M. Williams, 218-174; and in the championship game, Monacelli defeated Roth, 216-189

Love these old PBA Tour shows. I was bowling Saturday youth leagues back then. They were in the morning. I would come home, have lunch, and then watch the PBA Tour and Wide World of Sports. ABC controlled my Saturday afternoon viewing back in the day 😁

Just listen to the different sound wooden lanes make compared to synthetic. Bringing back some bad memories of my first time bowling on wooden lanes...!!!! Lol......

It was a struggle for even pros to bowl 200. We could have used some views of Monicelli's sister to get some beauty into the telecast but it appears she was not there. If you were like me, you were saying to yourself that I could have won this tournament, If the professionals were having a lot of trouble, most likely you would have too. Thanks for posting this tournament.

An infamous show this one! That second game would have to be a PBA TV record low number of strikes in a match. Anyone notice in the third game following the Lentine match, it appears they've turned down the TV lights shining on 59.

I'd argue this was Amleto's best performance. Had never begun to show he could do anything but rip the cover off of it. Sneaks by with a 150 then starts jamming it up the track and runs over Williams and Roth.

Gip seemed like a unique dude. Just did things and lived his own way. I think Bo actually says something to that affect at some point about him.

Gip and Amleto's match was brutal to watch. It seems that Bo Burton would have had a great look on this pair. But had to settle on being on the broadcast as color guy.

I read about this event in my Bowling 200+ book where Mike Aulby and Dave Ferraro talked about how extremely brutal this pair was. From watching it....yeesh....no joke.

TopKirby8305 I watched the Showboat Doubles event just before watching this upload. They stated that they used a machine to dress #60 and hand oiled #59. I do not know if this technique was used in a singles event

was it always 59 and 60 used at the Showboat for TV? (and I know the doubles was frequently at the Showboat as well) and what were some other (in)famous low scoring TV matches? and was Gip Lentine the only person NOT to have a strike on a TV match? (even in Tom Daugherty's infamous 100 game, he had a couple of strikes)

Yes, 59 and 60 were the "TV Pair", always. And, that's a good question about the lowest games ever bowled. I will do some research and get back to you, on that one.

I seem to recall the Showboat predominantly used 59-60 but on some other TV matches in the past used other pairs.

i guess you didn't watch the show or otherwise you would've seen the shit oil pattern and the terrible scores by all bowlers. plus you call Amleto "his opponent" ? i think Amleto, having the career he had in bowling deserves to be named and not be labeled his opponent!

dettigs Wife beaters should be addressed by name in a court of law, nowhere else. And Mark Roth's performance WAS dismal, given his ability to overcome nearly any lane condition. Find your entertainment elsewhere.
