1988 IMSA GTO/U from Summit Point (highlights)
Another cool club racing track that never got on TV until the pros came to town. Three hour race shoved into an hour broadcast, but c'mon...Pruitt. Kendall. Baldwin. Even some Willie T. in there..and so many more from this era. I'm not even angry that Nashville Network didn't let Diamond P do it this time, at least they tried. :D

Wow 31 years ago! I was crewing on the 0 car we qualified 36 of 39 hahaha. We left Gainesville Florida late Thursday afternoon drove straight through and got there in time to roll the car off and do the first practice. We had a horrible weekend. It was great seeing all the cars and drivers I use to see every couple weekends though!

Hey, me too. Just found this video. Driver #2 in the 0 car is my brother. A great introduction to pro racing after years of SCCA and solo. What a day.
This is gold. I grew up at this track
My wife and I had the top of Turn 10 Grandstand Tarp with about 20 new friends escaping a stinking hot day! Didn't realize until I saw this video we were watching the greatest in IMSA, Indycar, and F1 at my 1ST SCCA track.
Best one yet! ... my home town track

scca2k Yeah, Summit hardly ever got on TV. I swear, this vid is the only time I've seen it..and I have a stack of VHS as tall as I am. Best F&C Chief I ever had in Atlanta Region actually was a DC Region member when he first joined the club. His stories about the place were fantastic!
Great to hear Bruce Flanders! Did Long Beach GP for years as local track announcer and sometimes tv. I also miss Steve Evans, Brock Yates, Larry Nuber and John Bisignano and soon Hobbs!
Summit Point always seems like an absurdly dangerous track to me, up there with the likes of Thruxton
My home track. ♥️
I was at this race. Great period in racing.
Thanks for posting this, I practically grew up at Summit Point and was at this race as a kid. This brought back some memories.

I also spent a lot of time at Summit Point, including this race. I was about 17 when I got MY SCCA license, and raced F440's with my Dad. Great memories.

I drove Formula Vee at Summit in '82, was there for this. Now it's 2020.

Thank you for posting this race. I was there as a kid and loved those Mac Racing cars.

+Fred McConnell, you are more than welcome. Even back then, it was "Wow! Summit! They never get a pro race!!" I still think that's the reason I never recorded over this one.

Everytime I see footage of old races I were at make me happy as well. Your comment just made me smiling and feel good. Thank you. Take care mate.
Vintage Summit Point, lol... thanks for uploading this! Damn Tommy Kendall looks so young, lol. I would love to get my hands on one of those old Roush prepped Mustangs! The old '80s commercials are almost as good as the race! Great stuff man!

neda, you Ford guys should also research Tom Gloy. Mustangs & Capris in the same class, and sometimes even in IMSA GTO. What RSC doesn't mention is that Tom was T/A Champion in '84, and eventually owned a team..I think Dorsey Shroeder drove for him for a bit. Maybe Fellows too.

Love the style of Bruce Flanders - he makes everything seem new and exciting! Thanks for posting this - it's excellent! Now let's all go to "Opryland", y'all....
After racing Enduro or Laydown Karts for 15 years with Woodbridge Kart Club & WKA at this great race track it was a joy to watch this great race back when IMSA ran here. It is a good feeling to have run on track that so many awesome drivers laid it down. I still go to Summit all the time & love when the Jefferson 500 comes & so many great vintage racers & cars show up to duke it out. Thanks for the post ,it was a pleasure to watch.

Glad you enjoyed it! Somewhere around here, I think I posted up and old racing buddy's onboard of Summit Point. (SCCA Showroom Stock car) I never drove there myself, back when I was running, I did places that weren't so long of a tow. Road Atlanta, Charlotte road course, Roebling Road. I always wanted to go work Summit when I was a flagger, but work got in the way.

oldSCCAguy yah Hey, Thanks i did enjoy seeing this & it was my brother in law that sent it to me & when i thanked him he & his brother were at this race which was even more a treat . Summit Point is a mere 45 minutes from where we live so we go all the time. I have raced at Road America, Charlotte when they still raced Karts there & VIR in Danville. I stopped running a few years ago but man it was a blast. I have one friend that runs an old Ford Cortina with his dad & he has posted some on board clips from Summit. When the two vintage events they put on every year he usually does pretty well ,last year he took 2nd in his class. Again thanks for sharing that cool clip.

paul levine , my pleasure. You should have seen the look on my face when I found the tape! I'll bet the reason I never recorded over it was just *because* Summit Point hardly ever got any love on TV.

Well your right about that it still gets no mention on any sports channel i know of . We had Mag TV do a 15 minute show about 7 or 8 years ago on Woodbridge Kart club who have been running at Summit since the 70s. Which i did manage to get a copy of but i never see anything about the track unless there is a fatality which occurs once in a while sad as it is it'does happen. Now Bill Scott's son runs the facility & there are 4 tracks there, the main one as this race was on & one other for competition & a small kart track for separate events that pertain only to Summit & not the real race kart clubs as WKA & Woodbridge which run at speeds well over 120 140 mph. The last track is a test track for bikes & cars but has no racing on it. It's a wonderful facility which still is a pretty good secret .

paul levine Paul, I remember racing karts with you at Summit Point. It was nice seeing your name in the comments section of this video! Hope you are well, Bob Beach-
Thanks for posting!
After seeing those Toyota Racing ads, I'm starting to believe that in an alternate universe we'd all be playing Willy T. Ribbs' Super GT in the arcades. This is, of course, assuming that IS Ivan Stewart in the off road truck.
My home track! Wish IMSA could come back. Maybe as a Continental Series race
I cannot believe the amount of exposed trees not far off the track!
Tom cruise is driver omg
It's to bad Willie T put more focus on being a"BLACK"driver instead of just being a good driver.Being a racist about color never help's anyone.
