This is my look back at Yamaha's all-new TT350 Enduro motorcycle for 1986. This was Yamaha's mid-size XR fighter and was only offered doe sale in 1986 and 1987 in the USA. In other markets, it continued to be produced well into the early 1990s and remains a pleasant and capable four-stroke trail bike to this day.

    Back in 97 when I started racing Harescrambles here in Ohio, I raced Bomber Class (10 year old and older) there was a man, Paul Harry, that raced one of these. His dad Louis raced Super Senior (50 year old and up riders) on a matching one. They traveled to the races in a old one ton 79 Ford U Haul box truck. Those were the days!

    Thanku!! Much in agreeance!! I raced the 87 TT350 in enduro. Initially a 2 stroke man, I could not believe the lap times this machine produced...a combination of the PERFECT amount of engine braking and the perfect TRACTION power curve, I loved it!! In Australia, that year, the TT350 won more enduro races than any other bike and I can see why....brilliant lap times!! Bring back the TT and XRs please Japan!!

    I have one I bought 4 years ago and it runs great. No comparison to todays bikes, but still a great bike to ride around on. I love the fact it is so basic, air cooled, no batteries to fiddle with, no coolant or radiators to mess about with. Simple old school thumper

    Depends what your doing. On a mx track.. ya tt350 sucks. Get it in the tight twisty rocky with roots woods and most guys on fuel injected 450s struggle to keep up.. I know. I watch guys get pissed and throw their new bikes on the ground bitching they spent 9g to get beat by a 37 year old bike. Lol. Love it.

    I built a TT350 clone using a very well used XT350 as a base: Clarke plastic tank, 43mm YZ250 forks and disk brake, KDX250 rear shock, and the engine was redone with a bigger piston and a ported head. The secondary carb was tuned for the new engine and for an aftermarket stainless-steel freeflow header and silencer. This combination would easily run with an XR400.

    A riding buddy had a 1986 TT350S, and it was a great bike that suited him and his style of riding well. For several years, he suffered with a 1987 Honda XR250R that he bought brand new. Suffered with it? Yes, because he was a big guy who did not have the habit of revving the engine up high enough to access the meat of his XR's torque curve - he was a short-shifter while that XR was less of a torquer and more of a rev-happy engine. A bad match. So, after having his fun on the XR, he sold it and bought a used 1986 TT350S in about 1990. This TT looked like new, and his first ride on it was like a revelation. He literally said he couldn't believe he spent several riding seasons on the smaller-displacing XR250R when he could have been riding this TT350 instead. With 100 more cc of torque, the TT350 actually took his habit of short-shifting and propelled him down trails, up hills, and got air over jumps like the XR250R could not do without revving it out, something he never did. Needless to say, he got along with his TT350S very well. I liked the bike, too, with its good styling, good suspension, nice power delivery and plenty of it, and easy starting and maintenance (we not only rode together but often watched each other maintain our bikes during the week before the next weekend ride). It is too bad this bike was sold in the USA for just 1986 and 1987. Later, in the year 2000, I bought the dual-purpose version called the 2000 XT350M. This used the same engine design but with smaller intake ports, lower-grade suspension, and all of the usual street-legal parts, but I liked it and rode it a lot for a year or two. One feature with my XT350M I did not care for was the small, 36mm diameter forks that were not just more flexible than a TT350's 41mm fork tubes, but finding stiffer springs proved impossible for me. I solved that by grafting on the forks, front wheel, brake caliper, brake hose, master cylinder, brake rotor, and triple clamps from a 1986 Yamaha IT200S, a bike that came with beefy 43mm fork tubes. Since the IT's 43mm fork tubes were much more common on dirt bikes, finding the correct spring rate for me was easy and proved to be quite a worthwhile modification to my XT350M. This mod felt great by giving a much more firm and solid front suspension feel and better handling and steering by eliminating the vague, flexy and overly-soft fork action. I wish the XT would have come that way. It also worked quite well absorbing bumps and tracking straight in the rough. A side benefit was the IT's brake system of master cylinder, brake hose, caliper, and brake rotor were noticeably stronger in the braking dept. and much less a mushy and spongy feeling, something the XT350s had to some degree. Also, I forgot to mention I owned a 1986 TT225S, bought new in 1986. This was a great smaller bike for general trail riding and play riding, having easy-to-use power, light weight, small size, lower seat height, good handling, and surprisingly good rear suspension. It was basically the Yamaha competitor to Honda's XR200R. Also owned a 1983 TT600K, the biggest TT sold in the USA. It is shown at 06:01 in this video. I bought this used in 1989, if I recall, for a cheap price because the seller said it needed work to get it running. I fixed what was wrong and had a fantastic big thumper, having great big-bore thumper power and torque with good suspension and freight train stability. The bike looked like a million bucks, too. It was a great bike for places that allowed some speed, although I could go slow on it, too. I really felt good riding that bike and it was confidence inspiring.

    I was a skinny ass apprentice bike mech and clearly remember unboxing the first ones of these, your breakdown is spot on Not up to full comp use but was never meant to be. Was jack of all trades and with some light mods and ridden well was able to hold its own. Utterly bulletproof! Could be cartwheeled into the bush and suffer no ill effects! Rider would break before the bike would. Australia was lucky enough to get these for many years.

    Hello from France 🇫🇷 I miss my Yam’ TT 350 from the 80s and 90s 114kg for 30HP, nimble, agile, good suspensions, modern engine for the times, air cooling, low consumption.. good torque, good sound, raging in high RPM, no complex electrics but still full road-legal 2 seaters with good looks

    I have a 86 tt350. Had it for about 15 years. Got it street legal. Now I own 78 bikes. And out of all of them if I’m looking to go fast in the woods and rip up the hills. The tt350 is a rocket. I piss of guys with new bikes all the time. And with my dog on board.

    Good luck trying to find parts. I tried to restore my TT 600 once, most of it's parts are discontinued and there's no aftermarket support.

    @@danielc5205 ya not sure on the 600 model but so far I have been able to find everything from a brand new gas tank to number plates and tons of used parts on eBay. Im lucky in the sense that my TT was mostly complete except for a lot of little broken or missing parts. Thank goodness for ebay.

    I had a 89" XT 600 " since I couldn't get a 2 stroke to Enduro street legal only registered pre-80"s choose it over the 3 since it was more Motocross oriented than Street orientedand still could be whipped around on a motocross track and didn't look like a monster dual sport with a windshield and saddlebags, would have loved to have my ol 78 maico magnum 250 street legal thought" braaap braaat burrraaap

    Australia got them all they way through to 2000, they remained the same with just some colour changes. I've just fully restored/modified a 98 with uograded forks, rebuilt shock, worked the motor and its a fantastic bike even now.

    i have an 86 tt350 roller. has gas tank, front and rear wheels with tires, side plastics, racing shock. any idea of value? straight frame no damage.

    Tony, I remember having the same feelings that you express. I'd ridden my brother's XR 350 and found it to be so easy to ride when I didn't want to really go fast on the trails. I should suppose today's 350's are light-years ahead of the TT/XR 350's. They also had a TT600 that was nice. When I was riding my YZ465 I watched a guy on one of those conquer a hill on pure torque and really envied him as I had a lot more power but I couldn't "sneak up" on it like he could. Remember those? Good upload. One of my brothers had a TT500 and, as you said, it was monster. He handled it like a champ but every time I rode it I got visions of that baby laying on my leg.....not good! Really freaked me out. Those were torque monsters....if you got your pickup stuck you could just unload the TT500 and pull the truck out....LOL! Keep the Faith and Merry Christmas, Tom P.S. Oops! As I went further I see you included the TT600....my mistake. If you find one TT350, find one for me, too!

    Another fun detailed video Tony👍, I always wanted a simple Honda/Yamaha 350-400 enduro Thumper. I still do 😊 Weird the TT 350 was only on the US market for two years, here in Europe it was available all though 1993! That made more sense.

    Learned to ride on one of these. In 2000 or 2001, still have some footage somewhere. Had a lot of fun on it, still have a scar from running into a barbwire fence while riding it lol. N yea it would get up to 90 on the highway.

    I’ve got a 1999 model (which originally had a purple and white colour scheme). They were imported to Australia between 1989 and 2001. I came from an XT200 wanting more power and capability with similar reliability and maintenance as the XT.

    Dang! I still have this brochure and I always thought TT's looked awesome and wanted one but they were hard to find used. My old Yamaha dealer knew they were special and has two TT 600's He ice raced one of them and left the second one stock. I was really surprised to see you do a video on this bike. Thanks! I looked forward to watching it all day long. Oh and yes, I totally agree... I also wanted the Marty McFly Toyota back in the 80's. That truck looked awesome, and he had a hot, smart chick, what could be better?

    I literally just saved one from the scrap yard. It was headed to the crusher.Looks like it sat for many years. 95% complete and looks to be 100% original. Ready for restoration, let me know if your interested. I'm in upstate NY.

    I had a 86 TT350. Absolutely love this bike until I lost second gear and then ended up selling it. This may sound funny but the one improvement I made to the bike was adding a roost boost to the Ignition system. That really improve the throttle response and turned it into a one kick start bike. Thanks for the review on this bike.

    You could play with different CDI boxes although being a four stroke in the mid 80’s choice was very limited. We used to put 4 stroke motors in two stroke chassis

    @@Leonbjerknes you probably don’t have the bike anymore but, there are several good replacement carbs for the TT350 any same sized Mikuni, you can find jets etc. and clean and rebuild your stock carb they still have kits for them.

    Great videos, I find them very interesting and informative. I have a friend who rode a TT350 for years--he loved that bike. Would like to see a vid on the TT600. I have an '84 model. Ported head, Megacycle "Motocross" cam, JE 621cc 11.5:1 piston. Works Performance shock set up for motocross. The bike's an animal. It rips! It still looks great--not beat up, no corrosion or rust. It's a true period correct survivor. Keep up the great work!--Bruce

    Back in 1990, my neighbor's 1986 TT225 beat my twin carb'd 84 XR250 pretty bad in a drag race, i frowned heavily that day as the XR was my supreme dream bike that no 223cc machine should ever of beaten my 249cc's

    Never heard of a TT500 (XT 500 tin tank maybe)🎉. IN Australia definitely TT350 and TT600. I actually own a 1988 TT350 from new, my Dads. I'm sorry I may only be going from memory but, in Australia, it may have been marketing. The bike is visually recognised, but not for name.

    I own a 1983 TT 600. I've always loved the looks of these bikes. The TT was Yamaha's last true standard dirt bike, while Yamaha's new TT-R lineup is just for beginner riders. Yamaha is a weird company, they axed the TTs and the WR 250R, but still makes things like the TW 200 and XT 250. I believe that if Yamaha still made the TT 350 and Honda still made the XR 400, they'd still sell well, even as carbureted models.

    I'm doing up 3 1985 TT250's atm.......the sales issue was possibly that here in Australia and maybe other parts of the world was that as a learner or licensed first bike to ride on the road, the 250cc max rule applied until a full license 2 to 3 years later.

    Yup the midsize 4 strokes enduro / dual sport from the 80s were superb bikes and sorely missed Miss my TT 350 from the 80s 114 kg for 31 HP Low-end torque but raging in high RPMs 6 gears 2 seaters If you have to add a 2 seaters, no other bike in the last 40 years could rival it If you forfeit the 2 seaters part, yes for the XR 400.. but 10 kg heavier

    I Have a TT350 1991 and an XT350 1987 Made for the European markets, I don´t know why but it looks like the US versions have 27 Horsepower for the TT and The XT?. EU vers. XT has 31.5 HP and my TT350 have 33 HP

    I wanted one maybe 15 yo. I couldn't find one and ended up with a DR350. It was ...meh. It did what it was supposed to do I guess.

    There are cheap 4 strokers available today that are "cheap, reliable and fun to ride"...I'm going to add "very capable" as well. They are sold under the names GTX Moto and SSR.... My GTX FSE-R has been a blast to ride, as a 53 year old, non-racer I saw no point in dropping $10k for a bike I was going to beat the crap out of here in our New England trails. After thrashing mine all season for 110 hours, I admit I've been having some problems with the "electrics" that are being a pain in the butt😡 but the bike's basic structure and engine are very solid, I expect long life out of them. I'll get the issues worked out soon enough so I can get back in action.

    I just wonder why they don’t make a simple, old school technology bike for $3500-$4500 new. 75% of us don’t need the latest MX technology on a simple trail/dual sport machine , just decent performance, reliability and MPG. Are you listening H,Y,S,K ?
