1986 Ration Lightweight 30 Days Prototype MRE Review Meal Ready to Eat Taste Testing RLW 30
Ойын-сауық
The RLW-30 was a prototype 24 hour MRE tested by Special Forces troops in September-October 1986. Containing 2,100 calories yet only weighing 15 ounces, this was an innovative and state of the art design that surprisingly wasn't ever adopted. This ration after shipping and fees cost me $560. It is the only time one has ever been filmed - and like many rations on this channel it can serve as a reference point for collectors, historians, and people interested in food packaging and storage.
This is the only one I have ever seen outside of Natick Food Lab's prototype archives. It was a well worth it gamble to see how this freeze dried ration held up. See for yourself how this one turns out.

That extra beef jerky is much newer than 1986. Inkjet printing of that type was just barely something that existed for computers in 1986. No chance they'd use it on food back then, and if they did, definitely not for a prototype.
@edwells4769
11 ай бұрын
It looks like it was printed by a Videojet system, which have been around since the 60s. I would assume several of the food producers would own these as they are relatively cheap and reliable to use.
Thanks again Steve for a great video. I’m always amazed at the range of rations you review and then amazed all over again with the range of your knowledge about them!
Steve: "Get a good look at that. That's something that we're never going to see again, and this one's stale and completely inedible! And I'm not gonna eat any more of that." Steve: 👀💧 Steve: "...'Kay, I'm just gonna get one more bite of this..."

Hey Steve, love seeing the rare and prototype rations :) any chance of any modern rare stuff like a TOTM or similar?

Steve, first of all, i really like your video's. Second, the shelf life is drastically reduced when there is no aluminium vaporised on the plastic, because the molecular arrangement of plastic allows oxygen to pass through. Thought you might found this interesting to know. Keep on making these awesome videos.

Thanks for showing us the most rare of MREs. I have tried watching the other channels, and yours, and Emmy are the two I can watch again and again. The history you provide with these make is so much more than just a tasting, or all-purpose review. And thanks for telling us what it cost, as an added bonus of interest. Idk, after I saw you eat 100 year old rations, I thought there was nothing you won't eat. Do you know you STILL, to this day, take the cake across KZread as to being the only man to eat that level of revolting, and live to upload another day? People still talk about it.
Steve I gotta say I needed this video today! Thanks for the awesome videos

hey. I just met you. I believe you are a brave man. there is no way im eating anything like those packs after the smell test you gave. my brother was 13 years older than me. he joined the USAF about 1969. he would send me, from Tucson back home to SC, the packs that came with rations he would get. the napkin salt, pepper, gum and the P-38 can openers. I never saw any food. they must have been pretty good. thanks for the nostaligic thoughts. ill look around and see what else you dare to eat.
Thanks Big Steve! Love your work here!
I give you alot of respect for eating these things and keeping an open mind and giving them an honest shot. Most people would take that bite and IMMEDIATELY say YUCK like a reflex, but you dont. I find that cool.

Hey Crystolla! Thank you for checking this one out! I put two out this evening. The beef jerky looked okay - but it was pretty dry.
