Bacon can sometimes be indestructible. In the mid nineteenth century, some builders in a village in the County of Essex, broke into an old chimney in the building they were working. Hanging in the chimney, was a side of bacon, that the building's owner estimated must have been sealed up in there since the seventeenth century - it had been hung there to smoke, of course. The interesting thing is that the builders ate some of the bacon, and pronounced it excellent.

Just more on Range Cards for those who have not done infantry training or from countries who don't use range cards... The idea of a range card is that when a defensive position is set up you fill out the card with geographic features (dead ground mostly), ranges of notable features, claymore positions, barbed wire/obstacles other pits, listening posts/sentries and your designated arcs of fire. This means that you are not in your pit because you have been relieved or are off on a work party (or something else) somebody can jump into your fighting pit and know what is in front of them so that they can fight effectively. It's basically mandatory for the gun pits where piquet is usually run through the night and day by everybody in the section/platoon rotating through. Although the circles make it look like a target that's not what it is -you draw a diagram on it that shows the features mentioned above. You're meant to designate a distance per ring such as 50m, which help people understand the ranges and locations of features quickly and easily.

Hi Steve, I was a royal marine cadet, (in the U.K.) and these rations are similar to the ones that I used to eat on a regular basis on camp. The biscuits by the way, (in the packets) are designed to prevent you crapping on a regular basis. They actually were used to fill the soldier up and prevent them pooping, which means when on operations, they are less likely to be caught whilst on the toilet. The sweets also were mainly meant to be eaten when you are on the move to give short bursts of energy when fatigued etc. Interesting facts I thought you might want to hear. (Oh I forgot one thing, if you eat too many sweets in one go, they are essentially a laxative...) great content. Keep it up. Your number one fan. James

You've chosen an interesting one to review Steve (great video by the way!). There were a few 'firsts' for this ration pack, that wouldn't be obvious today. First, really interesting you spot the clear rice packet - this *was* indeed a trial of sorts. The old 'British' foods were going out of favour (Corned Beef Hash etc...) so they thought they would try curries again, but for the first time with separate rice, never done before. At the time, they knew that British rations needed updating, but the thinking was that British troops liked the *idea* of MRE's more than the actual US type meals. So, the hot sauce was a sop towards the MRE style, also a very new thing. The pate tins were history a couple of years max after this era, after that you got Pate in commercially branded (made by Princes, but not available to buy retail) retort pouches and now not at all. Also, did you spot the rather interesting 'no girls' logo on the chocolate? Duncans of Scotland had supplied the MoD for years, and when the contract ended they went bust - long having abandoned any pretence of making chocolate for civvies in any serious quantity. At that time, Yorkie (Nestle formerly 'Terry's of York') stepped in and back then had an half sexist, half tongue-in-cheek campaign along the lines of 'Yorkie - It's NOT for Girls!'. Some ration pack chocolate had this changed to 'It's NOT for Civvies!'. Later on, all chocolate was removed since virtually all conflict has been in super hot places. I don't want to talk politics, but sadly since 2010 British Ration packs IMHO have been the worst in the world, with privatisation of the catering leading a 'race to the bottom' where nasty, preservative stuffed retort pouches are being imported from Thailand and the likes, together with cheap ricecake bars etc...

Man, I miss those old packs. It's odd that the yorkies didn't have the "NOT FOR CIVVIES!" gag on the back of them though. No really, they used to have that line on them. It was a joke take on the Yorkie "not for girls!" tagline. I remember having even older packs than this which had some off brand chocolate in a white wrapper with a red stripe going down it. The hot sauce was replaced with a little tiny bottle of tabasco pretty quickly. Btw, that orange drink? We used to clean toilets with it. It was (colloquially) called "screech". It did a better job of that than it did as a drink! You'd need about 3 litres of water to make it sort of palatable. If we had to drink it, we'd just mix at most 1/4 of the powder into a cup at a time. Also, we *never* put it in our water bottles. It'd stink the things out and they'd smell like that for literally years.

This one is from my infantry soldiering days; you got a great menu ORP here. Few points: Oatmeal biscuits are amazing Bacon and beans was the best breakfast to get, totally agree it's smokey and there's lots of it as a bacon:beans ratio Biscuits brown smell and feel stale but are actually great for something so simple, put the Yorkie chocolate in bewtwen two like an un-melted smore and it's heaven The hot chocolate mix you use some of the water from the mess tin you heated the bacon and beans in (the rest is for shaving and cleaning the cam cream off) and with the sugar already in it (don't add more) it really wakes you up The pate goes straight in the empty sandbag to be thrown away The boiled sweets are for when you are on sentry at 0200 in the morning, if you focus on keeping them moving around your mouth, touching each tooth as it goes, you won't fall asleep The juice powders are great but you can't let them sit in your water bottle for long or they'll stick to the inside and you'll have a rotten water bottle in no time Hot sauce goes in the curry; the little bottles of tabasco that came before this were far better than whatever those sachets were When it's cold and wet, the stock drink will change your life

When I was in during 2006 we used to get a little bottle of tabasco sauce. When in the field most of my friends hated tabasco, so my jacket pocket would be full of tabascos. I would just drink them straight on a really cold day to warm the cockles of my heart, or load it on top of a biscuit brown.

This brings back memories! The yorkies in England used to have a tag line as “there not for women” hence the women with a line through it, The military ones had the tag “there not for civies” the powder we called screech powder, I loved the stock drink so shame it looked off. the oat cake you can eat by itself or mix with water to create a porridge. Great content, keep it up!

Man i miss these kinda ration packs, used to have them as an army cadet. Love the comments further down about the biscuits brown bunging you up and the biscuit fruit doing the opposite. i heard (and beleived) that rumour too though i remember doing 3 days in the field during out annual camp and never needed the toilet so the entire ration pack must be designed to do that either that or you're expectd to need the nutrients from them that much that your body absorbs almost everything from it so it doesnt leave any waste material for you to poop, loved the biscuit fruit but didnt like the browns anywhere near as much. I can remember the 'big trade' that always took place after we had our ration packs distributed, everyone opening them up and finding out what boil in the bag meals they had. and you'd hear 'Anyone trade a fruit dumplings and biscuit brown for a chocolate pudding' and similar as people tried to trade what they didnt like for what the did. I ended up with 10 packets of biiscuit fruit in those 3 days as only me and 1 other guy in my section liked them.

The fruit dumplings weren't popular Steve so they got rid of them. I loved them so got everyones! Later Yorkies in UK ration packs had the slogan, "Not for civvies" written on the wrapper. All we get now in our ORP biscuit wise is the oatmeal block; no chocolate either! See if you can get your hands on an old school UK Arctic ration pack - that's be a coup. Shame about the curry, when fresh it was brilliant.

just a heads up, the meals should have been: breakfast: bacon and beans with oatmeal block or biscuits, dead fly (fruit) lunch: soup, biscuits brown (or AB as they were originaly called, we called them biscuits arse buster, supposed to be alternative bread) dinner: curry and rice, with fruit dumplings for desert (yes us brits get a desert which is nice) other bits and bobs to be eaten through the day as desired. also the tea to a brit is terrible its one sachet per pint. and the sugars are 2 teaspoons per packet. the boiled sweets are great, always had a good exchange on boilies especially as i liked the green ones, so i managed to swap one of my reds for 5 greens, or 2 reds for someones oatmeal block, crumble it up, add 2 creamer and 2 sugar couple dead fly biscuits and a touch of hot water, and you get a decent porrige

we also got fruit dumplings in butterscotch sauce, that was a treat. nothing on treacle sponge however that thing could be weaponized to rot teeth at a thousand paces. least you didnt have cheese possessed sorry processed, crunchy cheese, a odd sensation. if you do get another i would advise dropping the pate in boiling water with a meal as the meat absorbs the fat and becomes more edible and less catfood. sadly your curry and pate had gone off over time as the curry used to be the most popular dish. pate was always crap though. and on the subject of yorkies, the original ones had a picture of a stopsign with a diagonal strike through over a woman inside and the tagline was its NOT for civvies, a play on yorkies marketing of its not for girls

Hey great review as always thanks. I joined in 2004 so I've eaten a few of these things from fresh. The curry used to be good but I guess after shelf life it doesn't age well that's a shame. The custard in the dumplings used to be more liquidy than that I think it dried out over time. Really delicious though from what I remember. Also the curry is supposed to be for dinner with the dumplings as a desert. Traditionally we only lit stoves in the morning and evening for heating up the food pouches. So for lunch we just ate the cold items such as brown biscuits and pate, orange juice drink, fruit biscuits boiled sweets and oatmeal block. There is an even rarer Yorkie bar that says not for civvies on it. A play on the Yorkie advertising slogan not for girls (hence the crossed out woman on the front of the wrapper) implying it was very manly chocolate. Thanks for the video it was a trip down memory lane :)
