I was in the Army when they transitioned from C Rats to MRE's; they were pretty nasty those first generation meals. But the Eggs and Ham was my favorite. If you were in the Airborne Infantry, you almost never had a hot, or even warm MRE; until years later when they developed the "Heater Bag" you're using here. And every Infantryman carried his own full-sized bottle of Tabasco sauce in his ammo pouch, usually stolen from the Mess Hall, because it was quite a few years before the mini bottles made their debut in the MRE. You haven't lived until you've made a chow break during a winter patrol, and had to chip away your frozen omelet with a plastic spoon, to get it down your throat; priceless memories.......

The ham and egg was one of my favorites too, but there were 2 others I'd trade for. The beef stew was ok but there was another like BBQ and rice or something like that that was amazing. Been 30 years so hard to remember them, but i do remember the hamburger patty and hot dog ones were the absolute worst.

I know it would probably sound crazy to someone NOT into rations, but this is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! It's so awesome that you were given this opportunity to really step back in time and try out a vintage ration in as close to "new" and "fresh" condition as is really possible. Now you are truly qualified to compare a modern one to the ones from the early 90s. Before this we had to rely on our memories (which tend to be unreliable) and the experience of eating 20 or 30 year old MRES (which really isn't a fair or true reflection of what they were like, as we're dealing with 20 or 30 years of the natural aging process. Thank you so much Jerry for having the foresight to freeze these things for so long and sending them along to Steve, and thank you so much for sharing the experience with us Steve! Also, I really can't thank you enough for sending one of these time capsules to me so I can also take part in this rare opportunity myself! Hopefully mine has held up as well as the ones you've tried. I'll let you know...

In one of your future good MRE meals, can you change the layout to a fine-dining, sophisticated setup? I'm talking about tablecloth, candle holders and classical music (JS Bach Brandenburg) playing in the background. I think the juxtaposition of eating a good delicious ration in that kind of environment would be hilarious. Since you seem to eat these already for dinner you can call the episode "Dining with Steve1989."

The terrible thing is most MRE's have a chemical that makes you constipated so that you dont have to shit yourself in the field. So more recently they come with gum that's strung up with laxatives to help you go so no diarrhea it's the complete opposite problem.

Thanx 4 the vids. brings me back 20 yrs ago to my army days in death valley mojave desert.

Hey Steve, excellent reviews! BTW, the omelet with ham mirrors the C rat ham and eggs chopped from back in the day. Those were my faves. Also if you get the chance, the T Pack (Tray rations) ham and cheese omelet was also great. If you haven't run into one, it's one big flattish, rectangular can about 3 inches deep, gray in color.
