Truly incredible it took over 20 years for the Saints to not only make the playoffs but finish with a winning record

And almost the end of the Killer B’s too, as they would be completely dismantled after ‘87.

1986 was Dan Marinos second 40 TD year in the 80s. He ended the year with 44 and over 4600 yards not quite 1984 where he threw 48 tds and over 5,000 yards. We can only imagine the stats he could have put up in today's pass happy era.

After 1986 Marino never threw for more than 30 TDs in a season, in fact only he threw more than 28 just once (1994). I believe Nat Moore retiring after the 86’ season, and Tony Nathan after 87’, was a big reason. He just never had great talent until ‘93, and that year he got hurt. In 94’ Keith Byars’ injury was a huge loss.

In today's NFL Marino would throw for 6000 yards and 50 touchdowns a season.

RB Reuben Mayes (36) brought a lot of excitement to Saints fans who began to believe they could finally become a winning team. The Saints were beginning to put the pieces together under Coach Mora in 1986. The following year they’d make it to playoffs.

Mayes was a great talent, Saints had a lot of great backs in the mid to late 80s. Reuben, Dalton Hilliard, Craig Haywood & I even Liked Gill Finnerty.

Did the Dolphins give up on Lorenzo Hampton too soon? He seemed to have a really good 86’ season, seemed to have lots of potential, great receiver out of the backfield. What went wrong?

Our running game wasn’t as bad as everyone claimed. The problem was that we would abandon the run as our defence would put us in a hole. Then Dan would have to start slinging it.
