1986 CCC / Dempster Route King II w/ 6-71 Detroit Diesel

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This truck.. where to start?
So Jared, Kenny and myself decided we would take a trip up here to find an old Pete Dempster RL. We knew it was operated by this hauler, so we stopped by the yard early in the morning in hope to catch it leaving the yard. Turned out that we were a bit late as they left shortly after 5 AM if my memory serves me right. Well it just so happened that the owner of the company was out front of the yard, and we got to talking to him about trucks. Looked around the yard, took pics of the many trucks still sitting in the lot and got some info on where to find that old Pete / Dempster. And if you know me well, or even just hardly know me, you'll quickly learn about my love for Detroit Diesels. So we got to talking about engines in his trucks, and of course, I asked about detroits fully expecting him to say he didnt have any. His response was something along the lines of "I've got one idling right over there" and points across the road to a lot behind a building. Sure enough, this mean looking CCC / Dempster Route King was warming up for the garbage route. It starts later than recycling and greens since the driver of it does commercial recycling in a Pete 310 / Kann Curb Sort recycler (which I wasnt able to film). But anyhow, the truck in this video isn't even the regular truck. It's a spare which we were incredibly lucky to see in operation. The normal truck is either the CCC / McNeilus MSL or the 1986 older style CCC / EZ-Pack MSL which were both being worked on.
Something awesome about this company is that they love the older trucks and genuinely believe they are better than the new ones. Case in point, the newest truck in their fleet was down for electrical issues.. so ol' reliable was sent out to take care of business. He said its rarely used because its a smoker and residents often complain. Turns out he wasnt kidding. She puffs a nice cloud all right.
It's been a couple years now that I've been trying to find and film a "proper" Detroit powered garbage truck, and who'd have thought when I finally did, that it wasnt even intentional? But I'm certainly not complaining ;D Even though this truck is pretty well muffled, it still lets off a nice scream when driving and packing. Nothin' else like a 2-stroke diesel.
Now lets not overlook the body on this truck too. Its one of, if not my all time favorite rear load body, the Dempster Route King. I love watching this packer at work. So for my first Dempster RL video, I'd say I'm pretty satisfied with it ;)
I hope you all enjoy this truck as much as I did, and dont hesitate to let me know what you think about the video. Its certainly not the last time you'll see a Route King posted on my account either, so stay tuned!

I am just so relieved every time I watch this video, knowing that you were able to get at least one video of this truck. Just imagine how mindblown people will be 30years from now watching this thing.

Yeah, I like how Portland worked that out. Theres a ton of haulers still doing business within the city as a result. Other large cities looking to privatize should consider similar ideas. Glad you enjoyed it!

Holy Detroit batman! What a fucking beast! Everything about this truck rocked! Agreed with Garbage /Trucks AZ, the sound it makes while packing. Music to my ears! Wow, never heard a place besides Cali to complain over smoke from a truck.. Absolutely killer work man! Enjoy this piece of history!

This was a 10min video which went pretty quick! I respect your enthusiasm for this machine in the video, definitely an awesome thing, just looks like the full garbage truck package seeing it at 2:10. It got me at the start with the somewhat mellow idling sound, then that thick puff of smoke followed by that roughly awesome DD sound. It's almost like it has it's own category, because you can't describe it as a growler or screamer, kind of in between eh? Always been a fan of how these Dempsters look too with the unique tailgate shape and cross bars holding the packer together as a whole - big fan of the fat slide cylinder. It was your real suburban garbage day scene during the video too, with the streets littered with bins, even another truck up ahead at one point, but then this loud and real garbage truck moving along with a couple of guys loading at the back. Good stuff!!!

You might be pleased to know that I've enjoyed this truck's motor blaring through my car speakers (that's right, playing it on the phone but hooked up to the car) on more than one occasion. And in an enclosed place like that it really is a neat experience...not something I've tried with very many videos' sound. But then again, not many have posted garbage trucks that feature this engine.

Speaking of Portland, OR: the 6-71 (in its non-turbocharged form) was the engine in many GMC Old Look buses that Rose City Transit (Tri-Met in 1969) had. After the re-branding, Tri-Met's "New Look" buses (by both GMC and Flxible) had 6V71 or 8V71 (mostly 8V71) engines. Tri-Met's last buses with a two-cycle engine were their 1982 GMC RTS II T8J204s, using 6V92TA engines.

Now there is a truck, I don't think I could ever get tired of seeing or hearing, miss those good ole days. seems now days while trucks may still have excellent compaction ratios, depending on the body, these new trucks while they may look neat don't have the excitement factor that a 2 stroke Detroit could create, both in the puff of exhaust or the growl. I am a Detroit diesel fan myself, but I still love garbage trucks regardless, you did a fine job in capturing this one and I hope there are many more to follow.

And I'm surprised the truck doesn't have a surgeon general's warning from all that smoke haha not complaining though!!! What was the truck infront of this one at 7:24? Once again great catch man!

The whole company is a fantastic company from what I could tell. Its funny you joke about the surgeon general warning as I almost said something along the lines of "this truck smokes 10 packs a day" when writing the description haha Very observant there about the tuck down the street. Thats actually another Dempster doing the recycling and its on a nice ol' Pete too ;) You'll likely see a video of it from Kenny soon! Glad you enjoyed the video!

woah I haven't seen a truck blow smoke like this in a while!! And nice to see you guys back up in Portland, they tend to have quite a few older trucks around. I agree with you on the Route King body being one of the best - I always liked the shape and design of the body. Dang this truck sounds amazing haha Color scheme goes well too. Liked seeing a few older carts up there too, like those Zarns. Also, been wondering, with a three person crew like this, how do they travel to and from the route? Does the cab seat three people? Really liked the last shot as well. Awesome work as always! This was so great to see!

  • @3amrepmike3

    @3amrepmike3

    10 жыл бұрын

Good question about the 3 man crew. Some trucks actually can fit 3 or more workers, but this is not one of those trucks. As you may have read, the trash is collected later than greens and recycling is. So the way they worked things out is that the trash driver begins the route by himself, and only has to do a couple streets alone, but when the greens crew finishes up, they come over and join the trash crew. Its a neat system that is set up just right for fewer workers but maximum efficiency. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting
