Hard not to like the old Bridgestone frames!
Got 30 early 90's Bridgestone mtn bikes. I commute/long distance tour on them heavily loaded with jandd expedition racks and a bob yak trailer with a drag brake. Simple, extremely reliable and super easy to work on. For me, 7 speed cassettes and cold forged triple cranks and Shimano thumb shifters rule!! Never owned any bike made from pop cans, shocked in addition to having no front derailler.

Worth pointing out those levers are T4000 Alivio, not XT. I wouldn’t normally parts snob about them. But I have that exact pair sitting in my spares bin now. Because the right one developed a weird sticky scrape that started driving me mad. I upgraded them to the actually XT pair. I paid way too much for my set because I wanted all shiny instead of the black bodied version Riv had in stock at the time. I also got the shiny DXR levers from Riv. They’ve been exceptional.

@ericmarth
Жыл бұрын
Thanks, David! Phew, don't put these thoughts in my head, it'll keep me up at night! It's a funny roll of the dice as the tape protects the paint on the chainstay. I guess my hope is that the shellac will repel moisture and as long as it doesn't get soaking wet all will be OK, forever.

Hi Eric, great build as always. With the head badge have you thought about using a sticker design on the brass and then acid etching making the design stand proud of the badge?
@ericmarth
Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Nope, haven't thought about acid etching. Could be cool for an intricate design or illustration on brass.
Great video! I have an MB-2 and I'm doing a similar build. Any idea which freewheels are compatible with my bike?
Great build Eric, I’m inspired! Did you have room for fenders with those 60’s?
@ericmarth
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Rick! I'm not sure, actually. The bike is off with my friend and I can't remember the clearance. We did have chain rub in the low/low. That could be solved with smaller tires and that might occasion fender room.
The only thing I would have done differently is strip that black paint off the fork and high polish it. Sick build.

Thanks, Alex! A local bike co-op is a great place to look, if you have one. Otherwise there's eBay, Pink Bike and some other small shops that list used parts online. The price has been pretty high lately but if you're patient you can get a set for less than $50.

I use Shimano EM shifters on one of my bikes, they're much nicer than the matching EM brake levers, which are plastic with very thin bits of steel pressed into them for styling. You won't even find a picture of EM levers because they're that bad. The shifters are perfectly adequate though, so adequate in fact that Sunrace copied them in more recent years. I'm surprised yours make a ratcheting sound, mine most certainly don't.

Did you have any problems with the tires because I have the grey mb3 and debating on getting the tire size 2.35
@ericmarth
5 ай бұрын
Yeah, actually have some chain rub on the tires in the low/low! The tires are Schwalbe Fat Franks, 26x2.35. They clear the frame fine, it's the chain line that's the problem. It would prob resolve with a smaller tire like a 2.15.
