1984: The BACK GARDEN ANIMAL SANCTUARY | Sixty Minutes | Weird and Wonderful | BBC Archive
Ойын-сауық
It all started with Tony the Pony, 20 years ago, and has expanded to take in owls, lizards, a three-legged fox and a deer that suffers from dizzy spells.
This is the Tilehurst animal sanctuary, founded and run by Doris Gash MBE in her back garden. Over the years she has rescued and found new homes for just over 18,000 animals.
Excerpt taken from Sixty Minutes, originally broadcast on BBC One, Monday 9 January, 1984.

I am wondering if the sanctuary was kept going after she passed?

She died in 2019. So she must have been 69 when this was filmed.
Glad she received a royal award in recognition of her years of kindness and selfless work. So different from the people these days who have honours bestowed on them merely for being part of the establishment!

Or for just virtue signalling.
Amazing woman. First class human being.
What a hero 😊
Sweet beautiful lady. Heart of gold. ❤
Thank heavens for people like her. Those animals were in excellent hands. She also gave credit where credit was due, to her helpers. Not many around like her anymore unfortunately.
Aww to cute , gorgeous human .
The lizzard made the cat spit😂😂😂
Cockatoos🪶 are usually so rowdy. This one knew how to behave when a British Lady is present. 😆
Tony the pony 😂😂

And he wasn't having any of it 😂 !
This reminds me of watching All Creatures Great and Small as a kid. Those were the days. My parents called it "Roll up your sleeves" because he was always sticking his hands up some cows arse. The Beatrix Potter series too...
Mrs Gash 😳

Yeah she shaved it regularly
Name the street after her sanctuary when people had decency. Neighbours would just moan nowadays the council would close it down. Mind the foxes looked a bit dodgy 🤣
This was the same year Terminator was released. Weird.

Sarah Connor was originally going to be saved by Freddy Laker the giant bunny. Unfortunately, Michael Biehn couldn't quite fit into the costume, and so Kyle Reese was born.

What's the connection?

@@Englishsea24 what’s not the connection. I bet if you tried to talk to this woman about the Terminator movie she wouldn’t have a clue what you’re talking about. A cyborg in 1984 LA and a woman in 1984 England obsessed with animals. I don’t think she’s going to be interested in sci-fi movies.

@swaneknoctic9555 People her age rarely ever know anything about the latest movies, music or other modern media. They're usually stuck in their own nostalgic timezones
