I have an 86 Monte Carlo SS. Black with TTops. Burgundy interior and buckets with factory console. Has 23,000 original miles. The 305 HO wasn't super power wise but really not much was in the 80s. But with the OD trans and 3.73 gear it gets down the road pretty good. Love these G bodies. Bought it 5 years ago and plan on keeping it till me time is up. Runs and drives excellent

L69 5.0 litre H.O was a very underrated engine. Was a potent carbed offering for the day for sure. The Rochester quadrajet mated with this small block was a sweet unit. I had an 84 z28 for many years back in the day an it was a blast. 5 speed BW trans. Fun. Fast.

That 305 is basically a Silverado pickup 305 which was 180hp and 300hp if it was swapped to 350 . If that 305 is making 300hp amazing! But a good running one is still fun to drive .

Yup, an SS. Based on the HOC website, with the VIN for the win: 1G1 for US made Chevrolet, A for manual seat belts, Z for Monte Carlo, 37 for two door, G for 305 V8 with four-barrel, high output, RPO code "L69", 0 is a check digit, E for the 1984 model year, R for Arlington, TX assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Arlington, TX plant still operates today and produces trucks and SUVs. Regular Monte Carlo models would have the RPO code "LG4" 305 V8, VIN code "H". You're correct on the US market, they only had 305 V8s, but there is something called the "Mexican Monte Carlo SS" and that had a 350 V8, RPO code "LM1" which was the "garden variety" 350 used back then. It was not available in the US market. No tag, can't brag, but possible code 27 Medium Dark Royal Blue exterior paint. Partially correct (although you weren't thinking about it when you spoke of it, since you're concentrating on the Monte Carlo). Certain F body cars also had the "HO" version of the 305 as well. Yes, the Monte Carlo Aero Coupe was 1986 and 1987. The Grand Prix Aerocoupe was 1986 only. Nah, you weren't beating much in these, that's for sure. My '79 Trans Am with the 400/4 speed (which is as heavy as this and doesn't have computer controls) would eat it alive and outhandle it too. No, some Monte Carlo SS models did come with bench seats, not all had buckets.

In 1984 I was 21 years old. I was a mechanic for Luby Chevrolet on Austin Street in Forest Hills Queens NY. We had two of them on the roof. One in slate Blue, and one in white. I drove the blue one, it was pretty fast for what it was. I was impressed. I wanted to buy one,but I couldn't. They were limited and those were sold already. So I ordered an 85. They came in other colors, so I ordered a burgundy one. Well, it finally arrived. What a complete disappointment. It was a great looking car, but it was a dog. For 85 it no longer came with the HO 305. It had a 305 four barrel from the caprice station wagon. No performance there what so ever. Again it was a great looking car. But not very fast. Anyway at the time I lived in middle village Queens ,and I parked it in my driveway. One morning my dad and I came out to go to work. Both his Buick limited and my Monte Carlo were gone. They took his car because it was blocking mine. Both cars were gone. We didn't hear anything in the house. We both got paid by the insurance company. I bought a new grand prix and my dad bought a new lesabre.

1985 still had the VIN code "G" engine (RPO code "L69") which was the "HO" 305. The "regular" 305 was the RPO code "LG4" VIN code "H" engine, which wasn't used in a 1985 Monte Carlo. Luby Chevrolet would become Lawrence Chevrolet and H.B. Chevrolet and it still exists as a Chevrolet dealer, except today it's called Sunrise Chevrolet of Forest Hills. Luby had locations outside of NY as well.

"Turbo 200"?!? Haven't heard that in a while. Mom had a 79 Malibu with the 200 cid (3.3L) V-6 making 95 HP and 160 lb-ft of torque and the TH200. IIRC, 1st gear was a 3.06 vs the 2.52 of the TH350, which made that Malibu quick........up to 20 mph. On cruise nights in the mid 80's, fill the tank with 98 octane Sunoco (lived near sea level), put in two bottle of 104 octane boost, advance the timing to 8 degrees BTDC, flip over the air cleaner cover and hope for the best. Little Malibu would hold its own......to 30 mph. I can remember a few early Sunday mornings putting the timing back to 4 degrees BTDC, flipping the air cleaner cover back to the original position and filling the tank up with 85 octane, trying to put Mom off the scent that I was out "drag racing" the night before. Never fooled her; Mom always knew.

Beautiful cars but slow. I had a 78 Grand Prix with a slightly modified 301 that would hang right with them or beat them. 80s were a weird time. We got lulled into the “ high horsepower “ of a 200 hp slug because we thought that’s all there was left and then got baited into 10 or 15 hp increases for the next 15 years.
