Bill Walsh was actually using the same plays that he used when he was an Offensive Coordinator for The Bengals.

Yup...the touchdown Montana threw to Earl Cooper was a play they hadn't used since Walsh's first season in 1979, a staple play from the Bengals of the early to mid 70's.

@GIL Favor I feel that Ryan Fitzpatrick has had a unique & special career. I mean, who would think a modern-day Ivy League quarterback would have the type of success (admittedly never sustained in one place, but still...) he's had, and for so long a period.

@@gluserty His career is no different from Marty Domres or Jay Fiedler. He is playing in a very friendly quarterback era where they make more money and doesn't get hit so he doesn't have to retire

@@howardcosell2022 I honestly think Fitzpatrick is a little bit better than those two (I thought Fiedler had some nice moments & could make plays, and although Domres was before my time, I'm aware of him and he seemed like an okay backup; maybe not Earl Morrell good, but alright), I grab what you're saying. By the way Howard, I loved your interview with John Lennon!

@GIL Favor A.J. Duhe (loved his turn as "Hammer" in the Miami Vice episode 'Walk-Alone': "Please Hammer, don't hurt 'em"--well, he did!) picked off three that day, Todd tossed five favors to the Dolphins overall. Definitely not the most popular Jets QB ever was Todd.

@GIL Favor Yeah, the Jets hammered the Bengals 44-17 in their 1982 playoff run. As much derision directed the Jets way by critics and even their fans, it is a franchise that's participated in 5 AFL/AFC Championship games and won a Super Bowl (an extremely significant one, in fact).

Joe Delaney is a Hall of Famer in the game of life for saving those 3 children from drowning, and sacrificing his life in the process. Even though he was a great athlete, he couldn't swim, but that never stopped him from wanting to help a person in need. Hard to believe that happened 40 years ago this year.

I was 10 in 1981. First NFL season I watched religiously. Almost every game. My dad flew us in his plane to San Francisco for the NFC Championship game. I was fullly decked in Cowboy merchandise. Just imagine my ten year old heart breaking when Steve Clark made "The Catch"..... I respected the Niners, but was sore at them for beating my team. Bet one dollar against them in the Superbowl against a friendnof my father's Needless to say, my dad.made me pay. Cured me from gambling... Miss you, dad...

Ken Anderson was the Matt Stafford of the NFL back then. A stat machine who could throw a pick at any time. Sometimes they were at the worst time. But he had grit and was tough. He usually lost to elite defenses, which is what happened in the Superbowl XVI

I was born during the preseason of 1981 in mid August and it is hard to believe that Joe Gibbs was almost fired in-season by Jack Kent Cooke after getting off to an 0-5 start in Washington and did a complete 180 to finish 8-8. I think as a whole, the 1981 NFL season was just so good across the board, it was one for the history books. Even the 1981 Draft launched many who would wind in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the 1981 postseason was just amazing from the "Epic in Miami", "The Catch" and Super Bowl XVI, which for the first time since Super Bowl III that two new teams participated in the Super Bowl and had probably had one of the more memorable goal line stands in both Super Bowl history and NFL history and was the launching point for the 49ers dynasty through the 80's. Furthermore, the Bengals debuted their iconic tiger stripe helmets and uniforms which were more distinctive than the 1968-80 uniforms as well as the first year of Super Bowls dominated by the National Football Conference in the 80's save for the Raiders wins in Super Bowl XV in 1980 and Super Bowl XVIII in 1983.

Wild how that game would've been for LT or George Rogers the year before or Elway and Dickerson the year following. Timing is everything. Then the Pats got the #1 pick in '84...and ended up with Irving Fryar. When you suck is just as important it seems.
