The Mel Blount rule (no contact with a receiver 5 yards from the line of scrimmage) was implemented in 1978 to give receivers a slight advantage on trying to get separation when it comes to the passing game.

Sam Rutigliano now 92 years old, and hopefully still going strong. Always loved his inspiration when he coached the Browns.

1978 was not only the first year of the NFL's 16 game regular season, it was first year of the Wild-Card game between two non-divisional winners and a minimum of 45 players per roster, up from 43.

They should have left it at 16 games with just 6 teams per conference making the playoffs.

The drop by Jackie Smith was thrown too low by Staubach. Throw it hip height and he catches it no problem.

@@topJimmyP1984 I have to agree with that too. Jackie Smith during his career has made that catch 19 of 20. Just so happens the 20th time Smith attempts to make that type of catch he drops it in the biggest game of his career which was in Super Bowl XIII.

Roger Staubach didn’t have to throw a bullet to Jackie Smith. With the Steelers as far away from Smith as The Florida Keys, Staubach could have lofted him the ball for a Touchdown.

@@Jiltedin2007 Still don't know why he didn't throw it out in front of Smith instead of hard and low on his back hip making him stop to try and catch it. The grass looked wet and slippy too. Smith should have caught it but Staubach could have made it a lot easier for him.

Cliff Harris was a day late and a dollar short in big games his entire career. Maybe the worst undeserving Hall of Famer ever. What did he ever do in a Super Bowl that was worth anything except bitch and cry to the officials?
