I personally think this is the best blowout of all time. Yes, no one likes to see a blow out, but dominance of Montana, Rice and the entire Niners team in this game and the 1989 season was a sight to be hold. If a game has to be a blowout, at least you can admire the sheer dominance of one team. One of the best teams in NFL history.

There is something satisfying about watching a great team reach their potential and seal the deal. And when they do it in such spectacular fashion like the '89 Niners did - you can't help but admire it. They just kicked Denver's ass so thoroughly.

The 1989 49ers is my favorite team of all time they dominated during the regular season 14-2 the best in the NFL and they outscored their opponets in the three postseason games including their Super Bowl route over the Broncos by a combined score of 126-16 and Joe Montana was also the league MVP for the regular season back in '89.

Is that post-season combined score of 126-16 the most mind-blowing stat in NFL history? Think about it. That's winning the very highest, toughest 3 games - Division Playoff, NFC Championship and Super Bowl - with an AVERAGE score of 42 to 5 1/3. And one thing I remember from that SB blow-out is that they took their foot off the gas in the 4th. They could easily have scored over 60 points. The '89 Niners were as close to perfection as there ever was. Virtually every position had a star player.

Tom Brady - the only QB who could throw over 500 yards, not once punt, and still lose the SuperBowl. Just kidding. I like Brady. He's the GOAT - highest numbers make him the greatest. But Montana is the BOAT - best of all time - the most efficient. Never needed kickers or defense to win the SB for him. He's the one I'd pick if I had to.

I remember watching this game with a bunch of college friends in the common room. Many Niners fans, including myself, but most everyone left after the first half, and nearly everyone else left after the lone Broncos touchdown. They weren't kidding about those final 22 minutes; after that the teams barely even tried to play. Even the announcers stated that it was quite unfortunate they had to play 60 minutes of football with the listlessness on both sides.

The San Francisco 49ers totally decimated the Denver Broncos in this game to the point where for one magical moment, nothing on Earth could stop Joe Montana from playing in another Super Bowl game! He completed 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards and 15 rushing yards and 5 TDs! His record 5 TD passes was later surpassed in Super Bowl 29 by the man who replaced him as 49ers starter, Steve Young who threw 6 TD passes in the 49ers most recent league championship victory.

The Niners were clearly the 80s team. They were different from the 70s Steelers in that their roster had more turnover from their 1st SB in 1981 to the last in 1989. The Steelers pretty much had their nucleus intact for all 4. The Broncos were the Vikings of the 80s. You knew the game was over when Jerry Rice treated future HOFer Steve Atwater's kill shot attempt as a minor inconvenience on the way to the endzone.

Definitely the era of free agency was more prevalent during the 49ers time and of course the 49ers won their 4th in 9 years, where the steelers did it in 6. As far is it goes for on the field play, I think the 70s Steelers and 80s 49ers were a lot more similar to one another than most people think. Both teams were well balanced on both sides of the ball, but most will think defense when thinking the Steelers and Joe Montana and the offense with the 49ers

As a life-long 49er fan, I take my hat off for John Elway for enduring this horrific loss like the Champion he has proven himself to be, on and off the field. As a football fan - as a sports fan - I can't think of anything more fitting than for Elway to go on to win not one but two Super Bowls for himself and the Broncos. Like my late father used to say, "winning is easy... anyone can win and stand up at the podium afterward with the entire world cheering every word you say. But only a true CHAMPION can stand in front of the world after such a loss." John Elway is that TRUE CHAMPION.

I said once that I thought this 49ers team was more dominant than the 85 Bears and I caught a load of criticism. The other one I always feel has to be mentioned is the Steel Curtain. They didn't run up numbers over their opponents in the postseason like the teams you mentioned, but they dominated over most of a decade, with the same nucleus of players. When I think of the Steel Curtain I think of Jesse Owens compared to Carl Lewis. Owens was the greatest once, but Lewis was great for 4 Olympics.

Little known fact, this game also ended the AFC's reign of most Superbowl wins, tying with 12 games each. Significant only because they trailed by 7 games (4-11) just nine years prior and came from behind to then lead the AFC by 7 games by the end of the '96 season. The AFC has never caught up to this day.

I have always been a Bill Walsh, Joe Montana, 49ers fan, but this was a game that was so dominating that I actually felt compassion for the Denver Broncos and would become a Bronco fan. I was so happy for John Elway and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 32 and 33. Ironically, the Denver Broncos won two Super Bowls with Bill Romanowski, who was on the 49er roster during Super Bowl 23 and 24. Bill Romanowski won FOUR RINGS, twice with the Denver Broncos and twice with the San Francisco 49ers.

One of the interesting things about this game is that it raises the question of whether or not the shotgun formation is, indeed, as overrated as Bill Walsh firmly believed it was. Like most of today's teams, the Broncos, (in those days) used that formation almost obsessively, whereas the 49ers didn't use it *at all.* Yet it was the Broncos, not the 49ers, who got blown out. Would a Bill Walsh-coached -- and hence shotgunless -- offense be able to do well in today's league?
