Congratulations for this rare footage. Athletes of that era inspired us to deal with long jumping and their standard/quality is rarely found nowadays.

That long jump pit doesn't look very big at all - on Dombrowski's jump he lands not that far away from the end of it

It's a shame the yanks don't skip more Olympics. The games are far better without their hollering, baiting and drug taking.

are you serious?!. the 1980 olympics was probably the peak of drug taking in olympics. there was inferior and rare testing and most athletes had developed their entire careers on a diet of dbol. look at the legs on display here!. theres some tree trunks going on. the east germans had some state sponsored sports labs that were churning out half man/woman athletes and the men were no exception. back then it was well known that drugs were very prevalent, and we're not talking designer drugs with quick half lives and high anabolic to androgen ratios, we are talking the same (even better) stuff that ben johnson got busted for. anapolan and dbol which are easily detectable were mainstays in the off and on season. alot of athletes reduced the use of them for peak events because they hold alot of water, but they substitute with lower water holding drugs to reduce weight, or just use mild diuretics either on the day of the competition to drop 10lbs. the average joe doesnt know that steroids have big differences in athletic effects. in fact some offer a very minor edge. Even "the clear" in the late 1990s was considered to be a drug that bodybuilders werent interested in as its effects were virtually nothing compared to the big A and the big D. But in the 1990s, an elite athlete could find an extra 0.1s over 100m, or 10-20cvm in the long jump by using the clear. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, dbol was responsible for 0.5+s over 100m and 50cm+ in the long jump. many training manuals of the time even included the "recommended" dosages!. ..So today, we have biological passports and sophisticated testing and out of comp testing unannounced, and every athlete is tested, and IF an athlete is using, you can bet its either a very weak acting drug, very short acting, or something no one has ever seen. its not really worth the risk really. but back then?!.. none of these athletes would be anywhere near these marks without them. Drugs tainted the sport from the late 1950s onwards, until they got reined in, around the mid to late 1980s. one of the best indicators is to look at the women's championship progression. each year they got faster and faster until around then. today, the top elites in some events arent getting close to what was commonplace in the 80s.

@@timn4481 Look, I agree that drugs are in these Olympics but 'peak' - the peak at this point was mostly in the field events. It started to ramp up in the 100m a few years later. And where you got your numbers of .5s for the 100m and 50cm for the long jump is beyond me. Where did you get these #s? How did you arrive at them?

Thanks for posting! Wonderful footage! - Historical note: there was NOT ONE positive drug test in the 1980 Olympics, in any event of any sport. Obviously the Games were entirely drug-free! - Just kidding...
