Many people don’t remember that Houston was a powerhouse in the old Southwest conference and was the choice of a lot of the inner city kids in Texas...

Third SWC title in four years for the Houston Cougars

I love the discipline of the Houston coach and whomever else might be responsible for the profile pictures that are shown throughout the telecast. All players are wearing the red v-neck sweater, with the white collared shirt, and the black cowboy hat. Very classy.

Frank Glieber play-by-play greatness. Never forget him with Verne Lundquist and Brad Sham doing Cowboy games on KRLD radio. Charlie Waters would pitch in as well.

Even with laryngitis Lindsey Nelson still sounded great to me.

One of the rare instances of needing a relief announcer. Lindsey Nelson had laryngitis and could only get through the first quarter. Frank Glieber ran up from the sidelines to finish the game.

and because of the laryngitis, Linsdey Nelson was forced to miss CBS Radio's coverage of the 1979 AFC Championship Game (Houston Oilers at Pittsburgh Steelers) the following Sunday (that broadcast was done on TV by NBC) because of it.

The only other instance like Nelson's I recall was in the Vikings-Redskins NFC title game where Pat Summerall did the game despite not sounding very good due to the flu. Ray Scott was thrown into announcing the 1956 Sugar Bowl because Bill Stern was, shall we say, incapable of doing the game.

@@steveprestegard5151 Had Pat been unable to finish, Brent Musburger would have took over play by play because the NFL Today crew was onsite at the 1987 Vikings/ Redskins game.

Cotton Bowl has always been a great bowl game. Having said that, my biggest pet peeve was that stupid (attached with what I assume is a PA system) pole you see at the 7:31 mark. It's amazing how the dumbest things can aggravate a person.

That was Bill Yeoman's fault, because with a 34-12 lead he put in the second and third string players. BAD mistake.

Being a SWC fan, I must say, 1977's SWC Player Of The Year, Texas Tech's Rodney Allison, was the best at running the option.

Several teams were able to run the Wishbone triple option successfully (Alabama, OU, Air force..). This student of the triple option finds it interesting that only Bill Yeoman's Cougars were able to thrive running his version from split backs.

To me the remarkable thing was that Houston was able to move the ball down the field that fast when needed. Comeback ability is not usually a hallmark of option teams.
