Let it go. According to the judges, Mike Mentzer looked unfinished at the 1980 Mr. Olympia. He lacked chest and back development and appeared flat from the side in comparisons. He wasn't robbed.

Arnold's legs missed the plane to Australia. They look thin viewed from the front and certain angles. I'd say his legs were only 60%-70% of his 1974 and 1975 condition.

Great video! It is worth pointing out that the next year’s Mr. Olympia (1981) was even worse ... with Franco coming back and winning! Danny Padilla, who as pointed out in this video, looked really good in 1980 ... solved his problems with conditioning and looked downright awesome in 1981. (I think he should have won that show.). It is also interesting that Samir Bannout, another guy with superior genetics, would crack the code of conditioning and show up a few years later to win the 1983 Olympia, decisively. Those were great days for pro bodybuilding ... lots of quality competitors... but also a couple of really suspect results at the Mr. Olympia contests of 1980 and 1981. You did a great job with this video and hope you continue making more about this period.

The thing about the 1980 Mr. Olympia contest is that it was held during a time where bodybuilding was aiming to be very mainstream. Contracts were being made in the industry, bodybuilders were going to television and Arnold Schwarzenegger was the face of the sport, to the eye of the average american citizen, at least. Not only was Arnold the star who had been the winner 6 times in a row, he was also the upcoming hollywood star that wanted to make it big in the screen. That being said, at the time, Arnold was considered a mediocre actor, with his first critics being very harsh on him, so his muscles, his physique was his main product to sell him as good choice for starring in a movie. So you take that, and you have the sport's biggest name making a comeback during a time he wanted to get big in hollywood: how would it look for Arnold if he lost the 1980 Olympia? Why would anyone in hollywood cast him, a mediocre actor, with a strongh accent whose main thing were his muscles and those muscles didn't even win the Mr. Olympia contest? It would be a disaster for Arnold's career. Then, you add that to the fact that Arnold and Weider were fierce advocates for high volume training and supplements. That made them very good money, and at the time, with very little information around, people believed it. However, there was one specific individual that defied that. One man that went on the opposite direction and said that you actually needed much less training than Arnold and Weider advocated. Not only that, you didn't need the much talked about supplements the industry was selling. That man was Mike Mentzer, the first bodybuilder to ever earn a perfect score. A 5'8 man that held over 100kg of lean mass on stage, a weight that was only matched by prime Schwarzenegger, a man 6 inches taller. Mike Mentzer said Arnold Schwarzenegger and Weider were wrong and he proved it with his very own physique. Who could argue with that? So then you see, the 1980 Mr Olympia was rigged from the beginning. Not only that, the rigging began in 1979, when Zane, a 5'9 bodybuilder beat Mentzer, who was an inch shorter and 45 pounds heavier. You don't hear much about 1979 because it wasn't as outrageous as 1980, but Mike Mentzer should have won in 1979. They made him second because the guy that dared to challenge the norm in the IFBB could never be awarded. That would be the same as admitting they were wrong. And Weider and Schwarzenegger would never do that. But the people caught on and called them out on that. How could the perfect score, heaviest bodybuilder on stage be second? So, in 1980, they put Mike Mentzer at 4th place, tied with Boyer Coe, so that when people would point out Mentzer should have won, there would be 3 men between him and Schwarzenegger. Mike Mentzer is the true 1980 Mr. Olympia and 1979 Mr. Olympia.

Also, I strongly suggest anyone reading this to search what the bodybuilders at the time said about their condition. Zane was injured and smaller than the previous year. Arnold was terrible. Mike Mentzer was the same, if not better, than the previous year. That was said by Frank Zane, Chris Dickerson, Tom Platz, Dennis Tinerino and many other bodybuilders at the time. It is sad that such an enormous amount of corruption made Mike Mentzer so disgusted that he quit competitive bodybuilding. Had he continued, I believe he would have gone to win several Mr. Olympias. His potential was unmatched.

This is for sure one of the best and complete Documentaries ever made about this legendary Event. And that after almost 40(!) Years! Great research, rare footage, very interesting material in general, well and high sophisticated spoken by a serious but never boring and at the same time highly objective story teller👍 You did a really good Job 🙏 All thumbs up 👍👍👍 My Opinion is the same as many already said: Arnold is for sure a living Legend, his win was good for the Sport and the Movie Conan but he was not nearly as his best that Day. I spoke with the late Casey Viator many Years ago and he said that it was right that Arnold won. But in general it is very difficult to say who should made which placing because as a fan of all those names it is never ever an objective Statement after all these Years. Mentzer should have been placed much higher. That is clearly seen specially in this great Video. But they were and are even by todays standards all supreme and outstanding physiques forever. Ok, all the best to the producer of this movie and stay strong, greetings K.Pfützenreuter Pro Coach, former Athlet & Author (hope my english is fine & hope to win the magazine 😜)👍

The Weiders always fixed it for their Golden Boy, they did it previously when they disqualified Sergio for competing in a NABBA competition I believe, leaving the door open for Arnold to win the title. Then in '81 fixed again for Franco. Mr 'O' has always been "dirty". I met Arnold around the time and he looked small.

1969 Olympia, Sergio defeats Arnold 4-3(seven judges). 1970 Olympia, Joe Weider replaces one of the judges from the previous year with one favorable to Arnold, and Arnold wins 4-3. 1971 Olympia, Joe Weider tells Arnold not to compete in any other competitions, but doesn't inform any other competitors, especially Sergio. The other competitors compete in other competitions(like they did every year), and all get disqualified to compete in the Olympia, because of some new rule that nobody was told about(except Arnold was tipped off). Arnold wins the 1971 Olympia by default. He's the only competitor! 1972 Olympia, Arnold not at his best because of an injury and Sergio is back and better than ever. Many believe Sergio should've won, but Arnold wins the 1972 Olympia. Like the bodybuilders in 1980-81, Sergio quits competing in the IFBB, until a comeback in the 1980s. 1973-1975 Olympias, The Austrian Oak doesn't have the Myth to go up against.

I really enjoyed this. It was thoroughly researched, and the pictures were amazing! Must be really rare. Since apparently Arnold and the Weiders bought up all the footage and photographs that showed Arnold in a bad light. For my own two cents (its fun to play), I think Mentzer won it - putting him fifth is a clever tactic to separate him from the conversation about winning. Boyer Coe comes second, looked phenomenal but due to a bit of pec gyno and his genetically blocky abs. Zane comes third, conditioning on point as always but lacking in size. Dickerson fourth - he knew where his bread was buttered, as the British say, with the Weider Corp. Thanks again!

Mentzer WAS mentioning Arnold in his Heavy Duty articles frequently, as the antithesis of proper training. Arnold's training methods were purported to be the very "vehicle" for his success. His mail order business was no small matter, neither was the very root source of his current success, which was bodybuilding. This, Zane, and Coe, was the impetus for him to go in there and and "set them all straight". He definitely set Zane up to compete so he could vanquish him. Arnold wrote about that and that he didn't want Zane's, "bruising his balls, or whatever", as an excuse to back out of the contest. Arnold's friend and fellow competitor Ken Waller commented that Arnold's '80 condition was a shadow of his previous condition. To paraphrase Kenny, "Arnold had a chest shelf deep enough that you could stand under it in the rain and not get wet. Why was he doing this? It certainly couldn't have been the (prize) money".

I think you are on to something here, Sipping Tea. I've always thought that the biggest motivating factor in Arnold's return was to silence Mentzer. The Weider's also were motivated to do so as well. Unfortunately, Mike spent a lot of energy tearing down volume training (Arnold and the Weider System), and also supplements which were a HUGE money maker for Joe Weider. Mentzer had to be silenced and this was a way to do it; his placing 5th after almost winning in '79 is proof as far as I'm concerned. Had Mike just stuck to his training philosophy and let Arnold and other Weider acolytes stick to theirs, I believe he would have won multiple Olympia's.

Great research and analysis. This was a tough one because there wasn’t a clear winner on stage. Chris Dickerson was good but looked so small next to Arnold. Zane wasn’t at his best. Mentzer getting 5th was the biggest travesty. Seems like they do that when they have a theme champion picked - put the biggest challenger in 5th place so it’s harder to dispute.

If only zane had not had that accident by his pool......things could of been so different. He was reportedly much heavier before his accident, and could of been even bigger on the stage. I remember looking at the magazines during 1980: and it was reported that he was on track for a fourth win. Can you imagine if he had beat arnold again, like he did in 68....boy that would of been an accomplishment. But even though he was smaller at the 80 Olympia: he was still in fantastic shape......and l believe he deserved to win: it should not be just about size, size....and yet more size.

The 1980 contest was a paid-advertisement for Ahh-nold as he promoted his upcoming movie Gonad the Barbellian. My friend Mike Mentzer was the favorite having placed 2nd to Frank Zane (who was seriously injured weeks earlier and not prepared) in 1979. He was 5th. Ahh-nold should have placed no higher than 6th.

I spoke with Frank and Barbara Burwash a couple of days after the debacle, at their Dandenong Gym, and after they came back from Sydney, and with Boyer Coe in '85 in Palm Springs. They ALL said the same thing, it was a sham. Frank was really pee'd off saying the whole thing was BS, and a set up. They gave their reasons, which included, among other players, Paul Graham. I also spoke with many of the Aussie BB's who went to the comp, and they too said it was BS. I was intending to go, as I was a trainer and IFBB judge, but Frank advised it wasn't worth it and he'd fill me in when he got back. Boyer confirmed that a trophy was smashed back in the change rooms, out of anger and disgust at the BS, but I've forgotten who he said it was. It could have been Mentzer as they'd argued pre-comp.

@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines Were you around, as an adult, competitor, or in the audience, in those days? As I was part of the Australian in-crowd, their experience, and the telling of what they saw and believed, has far more weight than yours, especially so late after the event.

@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines I'm 82. I was well and truly around then, at the start of the black-iron era. I was also an experienced IFBB, NABBA and qualified physical therapist. You said you weren't around then, or perhaps not even born. So the physical dynamics are unknown or lost to you. While I understand that your opinion is to be respected, it's based on an-after-the-event as viewed on a video. I was involved in actual time. Based on that I can only conclude that, your opinion is speculative and subjective (emotively charged). BTY: Do you believe that Bruce Lee was the greatest fighter that was ever born, and what is your age and BB experience?

@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines Your age and experience has every thing to do with the topic (Arnold and the infamous win) at hand! You claim, and assume, you definitively knew what happened. I say, that unless you were in real time contact with the players, who were actually involved, you are little more than a speculator, and a keyboard jockey, and by your comments, uninformed, unqualified, and emotively biased, lacking objectivity. The qualified opinions, of the actual players, carry far more trustworthy weight than yours. The politics in too many of these contests aren't known to the general public, but they are real, as it was then!

Awesome video. In spite of Arnold's antics, I probably would have awarded him the winner. However, I wouldn't give Chris second; IMO, that belonged to Coe or Mentzer, and I'd slightly favor Mike. Boyer in third, maybe Zane in fourth. Chris might eek into fifth but Roy and Roger were far more muscular; I'd probably place them ahead of Chris.

He was ripped and looked incredible, the only thing that can be said is that he was not quite as big as 75’ but he still had the awesome size and symmetry.
