Just found this game after I'd forgotten about it, like many have. One of the great comebacks and Hail Mary endings in college football history. McMahon went on to become the best Bears QB in the last 50+ years.

I am a pro football fan, not a college football fan and heard and read about this game for decades and have never seen this game. I did not realize when it seemed very much over that is actually got worse for BYU before it got better, sort of like Boise State in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

Five days earlier he got pretty excited on Vikings radio when the Vikings beat Cleveland on a Hail Mary on the final play of the game(ironically from about the same distance as this one)

When the announcers said that BYU had a change of heart when they decided not to punt the ball in the 4th quarter, they were likely unaware that Jim McMahon lambasted LaVell Edwards on the sideline for sending in the punting unit. LaVell Edwards was basically ready to give up, thinking that the Cougars had no chance for a huge comeback.

SMU players had their Christmas bonuses revoked and their courtesy cars impounded after this. I’ll bet this was the last time Ron Meyer went for two for no reason as well.
