I can't remember where I read this but someone said that BYU deserve the national championship by winning the holiday bowl despite having six turnovers in the game. Weather that's true or not but speaking for myself I found that comment very interesting to say the least.

@@christopherfoote4643 BYU actually asked the #2 ranked team which was Washington to play them, and Washington denied the request a couple of times. Washington ended the season 11-1, BYU was 23-1 for the last 2 years. But your right there was no BCS back then. The National Champ back then was picked by the Coaches. There was no NC bowl like there is today.

@@christopherfoote4643 The Voice of College Football 6 months ago Exactly. Reply ericpallred ericpallred 11 months ago (edited) Lots of hypotheticals, here is some actual data to consider, especially with SoS arguments, every loss and common opponent should be considered: * 1984 Washington was not even PAC10 champ and had similar win 20-11 against that SAME “worst ever” Michigan team which wasn’t so bad = Mich beat defending Nat Champ Miami ranked #1 at the time * UW lost to USC -> lost to Notre Dame -> lost to Air Force (BYU beat Air Force)🤷🏽‍♂ * UW was wiped out head-to-head by BYU 30-3 few months later Sept 1985🤷🏽‍♂ * in 1983 UW was ranked most of season, when ranked 11th lost at UCLA 24-27, but BYU won 37-35 at UCLA in 1983 * in 1984, UCLA (9-3, final rank AP: 9) barely beat San Diego St 18-15 -> BYU demolished SDSU 34-34; UCLA beat USC 29-10, USC beat UW; UW did NOT play UCLA in 1984 * also re: 1984 UW loss to USC, USC vs Utah St 42 - 7 first game -> BYU vs Utah St 38 - 13 last game; USC lost to UCLA, which had lost to BYU in 1983 & barely won vs SDSU * Therefore, NOTHING from 1983-1985 suggests UW was innately better than BYU in 1984, and in fact the data indicate BYU was better than UW in that entire era including 1984 when it couldn’t even win PAC Re: Florida * BYU beat Michigan -> beat Miami -> beat Florida , ergo BYU could also beat Florida🤷🏽‍♂ Oklahoma common opponents with BYU: * win 42-10 at Pitt (week after Pitt’s loss to BYU) * win 34-15 vs Baylor (BYU won 47-13) * OU lost 11-28 at Kansas (with losing record 5-6), BYU did not lose to anyone much less a perennially terrible team like Kansas Nebraska lost at Syracuse. * Syracuse beat Pitt 13-7; BYU beat Pitt 20-14 * Nebraska beat UCLA (9-3, final rank AP: 9) UCLA beat San Diego St 18-15 -> BYU beat SDSU 34-3 * ergo BYU could also beat Nebraska * Common Opponent OK St win 19-16 vs SDSU (BYU win 34-3 vs SDSU, ergo BYU would destroy OK St) Doug Flutie and Boston College lost at a pretty mediocre Penn State. * BYU beat Pitt 20-14 -> beat Penn St -> beat Boston College (final rank AP: 5), ergo BYU could also beat Boston College * Also, BYU won 28-14 vs Boston College to open 1985 season Also, BYU didn’t come out of nowhere, and had put multiple first-rounders into NFL, multiple All Americans, multiple Heisman finalists, multiple Sammy Baugh winners. BYU didn’t just go undefeated in 1984, it had a win streak of 24 straight! BYU had also won 11 straight in 1983, including over PAC10 Champ UCLA and over Big8 runner-up Missouri in Holiday Bowl. Think it’s easy to win 24 straight? Ask every other 1984 Top 10 team, which lost games to “lesser” teams, sometimes BAD teams. But BYU didn’t lose to ANYONE in 24 games straight. BYU weeks in AP Top 10 prior to 1984: 12 times (in 1983, 1981, 1979) Final AP rank Top 15: 4 yrs (1983, 81, 80, 79) Ranked Top 25 (# weeks, Final rank) - 1983 (11 wks, #7) - 1981 (12 wks, #13) - 1980 (9 wks, #12) - 1979 (11 wks, #13) - 1977 (12 wks, #20)
