    My parents own one. It is still drivable. A living legend. I grew up in it and it was awesome. In Eastern Europe we had to do with what was available. Camping trips, fishing, barbecues and so on, this piece of crap worked flawlessly and it still does. You can’t kill a two stroke engine. No rust due to having panels made of some sort of fibre mixture, lightweight that you can lift it by yourself, minimal maintenance. It’s perfect when you don’t have much.

  • @mfbfreak

    @mfbfreak

    Жыл бұрын

    Trabants can sadly rust pretty badly underneath the duroplast panels. You don't see it, but it definitely happens. Especially the final 4 stroke models have big rust issues with the rear subframe.

  • @dennisyoung4631

    @dennisyoung4631

    7 ай бұрын

    Given that issue, you’d think they’d phosphate-treat the metal parts, then paint them with some dip&bake enamel so as to “keep the rust to a minimum.” After all, I’d not want *scarce materials and exceeding hard labor* to go to waste.

Legislation said max indicated speed was 85mph/140km/h (yes, US cars are required to have both imperial and metric on same gauge) Some cars kept the 85 mph speedo into the 1990s for some reason. It didnt matter if car could go 155mph speedo still stopped at 85 (with "55" clearly marked).

    As I was six years old and visited my uncle and aunt in DDR (1970), I enjoyed the 2 stroke fragrance and the brown coal smell everywhere in the air. You could see cars and bikes of the 50s, russian buses looking (and sounding) like iron dinos. The streets were very old, the houses and shops too. It was a journey into another time, a trip into the years long before my birth. It was a great adventure for my sister and me. And for my parents too, because my mother was been a republic refugee, an enemy of the past.

    A dude decided to take a long trip using his trusty Trabant. Half way through his journey, the car stopped running, living the poor fella stranded in the middle of the highway, asking other drivers for a tow. Soon enough, a kind soul driving a state of the art Ferrari, saw the man in need, and decided to help him. Some time passed, everything going smoothly, when a jackass with a Porsche 911 passed the Ferrari driver, flipped him off, and the race was on. The next day, news reported that during a dangerous high speed race, between a Porsche and a Ferrari, with speeds reaching over 250 km/h, a person driving a Trabant was angrily honking and gesticulating at the two persons racing, to let him pass.

He really put it to work as he went(sometimes I went along with hime) to pickup 450 kgs of animal feed and the car just pulled like she had 100+ bhp. Of course this was due to the way 2-stroke engines operate but It still I got to say "Trabi" is one magnificent vehicle.

    Ours was the same but sky blue color, а 1986 model. Speedo easily went down to 6 o'clock every time, no mods, all factory car. My dad bought a second one in 1989, brand new again, and it could hardly reach 120km/h, so he sold it few months later, and kept the older one, until it was stolen in 1995 or 1996! That is the only German car I respect and trust as being reliable! Besides feeling as in a proper racing car, this car provided other unique experiences. Going up hill heating would be nice a warm, but when you went downhill, it would quickly cool, and in the winter the windscreen could easily freeze inside if the downhill part was longer :))). That's because the heating used the exhaust gases to heat up the air, via a secondary skin cover over the front muffler, situated right after tne exhaust manifold. So when gases cooled, while engine was idling or at full vacuum, the air would not heat up :). There was a plastic dip stick to measure how much fuel you had left in the tank, and calculate how much oil to add to this fuel, as it was a 2 stroke engine. Owning a Trabant after an original 1969 Fiat 124A, was a great, as the Trabant never ever broke down on the road, unlike the Fiat which did so regularly!

I particularly enjoyed the manual turn signal, that gives the driver the opportunity to turn it off rather than having the car do it which is less insulting to our intelligence as drivers. Also the little stress vibrations were almost a bit ASMR, thank you.

Seemed to belong to people from rural areas who use it for local transport, shopping etc. in the near town etc. I talked to them, they seemed to be quite satisfied with that vehicle. Especially as far as the simplicity of the engine is concerned. I had one an a student some thirty five years ago: Extremely cheap, no problems at all, no mechanics necessary. A basic car, but worked very well. Drove 116 thousand kilometres in it - about seventy five thousand miles. Then the bearings of the crankshaft broke, and I had a new one built in.

They told me if you can drive a Trabbi you can drive anything. Steering was incredibly heavy AND slow, The owner in very broken English told me don't coast in any gear except 4th. It only has a freewheel in fourth. People are nostalgic about them now, horn honking and waving when you're in it. Supposedly they are indestructible - to prove it one of the owners got on the roof and jumped up and down. Our tour guide rode in my car in the back seat ( she was about 5' 10" - a lot of tall good looking women in Budapest) and I was in the passenger and am 6' 1".
