1979 Fiat Spider 2000 Disc Brake Caliper Removal and Installation

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In researching how to replace the calipers on my Fiat I ran into a lot of support on the forums which was very helpful and I also had the shop manual. The shop manual did not have very detailed pictures or procedures on how to deal with all of the small parts and unique assembly of the Italian caliber. The advice I got on the forums was very complete and concise and definitely helped me get the job done but there were a few things that I saw that led me to create this video to help clarify things In a way that I know others will appreciate as much as I have appreciated the help that I have received.

Really helpful - yes my "expert" mechanics had made the same mistake. Thank you!

I have a 1975 CC coupe, same front brakes. Replacing pads, this video is most helpful. Thank you from Australia.

Well done. I actually did the spring the wrong way and my brakes were grabbing badly to the point of tires squealing.

Steve I just subscribed. I also own a 1979 Fiat 2000 and after updating the whole front braking system, including new MC and booster. New front calipers and rotors, and hoses. The front brakes lock when hot and slow down the car. Reversing becomes very difficult and the car hangs in place. I need to check the position of the springs for they might be installed incorrectly. Otherwise, I don't see any other problem. I backed up the booster's adjuster a bit and it seems to be braking better until the system is hot.

Great video, just the info I was looking for. I think you're supposed to use a high temp caliper grease on the sliding surface of the plates, but not 100% sure... The grease allows the caliper to slide freely on the caliper brakets so the pads don't drag on the rotor. Thanks again, great video.

Ryan Smith you are 100% correct. I learned that later, after I shared this knowledge. I’m doing the grease job next week. Good things come from knowledge sharing!

Question - I was just working on my 1986 Fiat X1/9 rear brakes, which are not identical but very similar, and after changing the inner ring and dust boot and reattaching the piston on the rear brakes, the piston is now sticking out too far to get the caliper back on. There is no fluid in the system and I took off the ebrake cable, so its neither of those, and the piston is screwed in as far as it goes. Do you have any insight into what might be causing that??

Rear brake pistons should be screwed in totally. There is nothing else you can do. If actuating rod is assembled correctly it should work.

@@vlu1652 Thanks for the reply. I ended up unscrewing the piston, reseating the ring and screwing it back in and it worked. I appreciate your taking the time to respond.
