As great as it is watching the old shows..the classic commercials are just as great!!! Thank you!!
I was there for this tournament. I bowled in the pro-am and had Mark Roth as one of my pros. I stood outside freezing in below zero temps waiting Saturday morning before the telecast. I ended up sitting all the way down by lanes 3-4 so had to watch the TV monitors to actually see the games, but it was a lot of fun to be part of!

Al Michaels was already well established and for him to fill in for the PBA is just awesome.

When you hear his voice, it just made it 'big league'. Absolutely one of the best announcers ever. And yes, it was an absolute thrill to hear him fill in for another legend, Chris Schenkel.
Love watching these old broadcasts even with the commercials.
A tournament sponsored by Dutch Masters. Gotta love the 70s.
No disrespect to Chris Schenkel, but Al Michaels is the greatest announcer I've ever seen. He only announced maybe no more than three or four times, and he did his homework about the sport, and did an excellent job!!!
Love Schenkel, but Al Michaels makes any event seem very important. He can do any sport well.

It's Al Michaels doing bowling!!!
hi mrbowling300. thx for all the videos! that sure looks like ozio. there's a real good shot of him at 19:11 when they're showing bill colemans family in the audience.
Earl Anthony (RIP)🙏 The G.O.A.T.
Wow, those gold bowling shoes are something else!
Ball hardness was an issue in the 70s. During the early 70s, bowlers would soak their bowling balls in chemicals (acetone, turpentine, etc) to soften the shell of the ball to make it grip the lane. It got so bad that the PBA required a minimum hardness and started measuring it. There's a big section in the book The Perfect Game about this.
24:32 I always thought Jason Belmonte was the one who invented the two handed delivery!! 😳
John Wilcox, back to back 300's, was close to the Dutch Masters finals but no cigar. 5:45, Ernie doesn't have a hometown, he is homeless.
Hudson did indeed put a lot of pins straight back into the pits. There was nothing like watching bowling on ABC and then watching Wide World of Sports and some barrel jumping. Al Michaels before he became THE Al Michaels from his call in 1980. Hockey my friends. Olympic hockey. You know USA iv USSR. Thanks for the video. These are great.
Loved the commercials as much as the bowling. Lol

Mr. Schenkel (RIP) Also was an expert on many different sports and had the experience doing play by play in many other sports besides bowling. Chris& Bo had chemistry that is almost non existent. They didn't have to come up with corny catchphrases [ hambone] Randy is cool. Rob Stone is corny. Dave Ryan is ok. Bo & Chris will always be [" THE G.O.A.T.S"]👍🙏

I knew that fact, but never heard him do it until now -- pretty good for a guy who didn't do it much.
Hi ! Can't thank you enough for putting these up so I can see what I missed way back when!!! Love the old commercials as well !!! Thanks again Mr. B !! And btw, there is one tournament I remember, it was a Midas tournament where if there was a 300 shot in the tv round, the prize was 250k!! I didn't catch it, they were talking about it at work on Mon. morning, there was a rep from Midas sitting there on the sette with a breifcase opened which had the money in it. If you have it, would you Thanx
Tommy Hudson looks like a Bill Murray character.

Al Michaels on the play by play!
At 15:56, is that James B. Sikking from Hill Street Blues as Harvey Firestone? And did Schlegel leave without a handshake after the match with Coleman?
I'm glad he didn't use up the "Do you believe in miracles!" quote on this telecast and saved it for the '80 Olympics
Thanks! A little bit of bonus coverage at the end.

Today's bowling balls had ruined bowling. If you had to use the equipment these guys had in 1979 no way would you or anybody else shoot a score that big. Bowling is a joke now no skill involved anymore. Let's go back to urethane and plastic. When bowling was invented it wasn't designed for these high tech bowling balls. Haven't watched the PBA on TV in years. Everytime I seen it while scanning channels same people same line or two handed crap. When they invented reactive resin balls their intentions was to get more people into bowling. I'm sorry but that idea has back fired in a disastrous way. I still enjoying watching Pete Weber and E.J. Tackett. Both have a true talent

Chris Schenkel did the bout later that day in which John Tate destroyed Minnesota's Duane Bobick in the first round!!!
Lifetime, Hudson was 10-11 in championship matches. Lifetime, Dickinson was 8-11 in championship matches.
Is that John Holmes sitting in the 5th row pulling on his hog?
Is is true that Arron Hernandez did Hertz commercials??
These were the days.... Smoking a cigarette on commercial break. How ironic Al Michaels hosting bowling and Chris Schenkel hosting boxing. That 12,000 dollar check in 1979 is worth 53,000 dollars in 2023
