1976 Turbo Trouble Porsche 930
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This car came to us running poorly. It was not just one problem, but lots of smaller problems that add up. After fixing the majority, we found the fuel injectors were not functioning totally correctly.
With the running issues under control, this turbo can continue with its rebuild story.
Thanks for watching. We are also thankful for going over 6,000 subs.

So many little things can cause it to run a bit off. These types of videos are hard to shoot, but needed. Thank you for sharing!

Kurt..your video's are so good i learn everytime you put one up!...You and other porsche engine builders on YT are so helpful to us guys who have our cars at home in the garage.Thankyou for your time to even do these videos..cheers...I use morey's fuel upper cylinder lubricant in my fuel and its great I think for these Porsche's of the 70's...my fuel distributor is still working perfect and engine runs well.

@@klassikats I second that. Great explanations. Even as mine isn't an AC (mine is a 997), love those AC 911s. Thanks for those detailed technical explanations.

These cars are not made for drag racing, Gears are too tall, power band too high. Where these cars excel is high speed long straight aways or autobahn type roads. Kurt
Thank you for this video. This is your subscriber on the West Coast Los Angeles. I hope one day you can do the restoration on a Targa top replacing the four pieces of fabric that goes on the target top. I would like to learn how to do that. I wish there were more videos. There are some videos, but one is in Spanish. Then there is a guy who has done it called Afternoon Garage ! I hope this makes sense because I’m talking into my phone. I don’t feel like typing but thank you.

We have been toying with doing a video on rebuilding the Targa roof, we do have a couple of core roofs on the shelf. Will let you know if we move forward with it. Kurt
Great video! Thanks Kurt and Sara! What a fascinating video, amazing how you figured everything out. Im grateful I have a Carrera, but they have their own issues. Once you got everything sorted out, she was purring like a kitten. Great Job!

This car needed a skilled driver. There were many accidents with the 930 because the drivers treated the car like it was just another car. The turbo engine is tame right up till the turbo spools up and then the horsepower comes on somewhat abruptly. You also have to do most of your breaking before the corner, then apply the gas,set the cars weight on the back wheels and accelerate through the corner. A lot of 930’s were wrecked going backwards because the driver would back off the gas after entering the turn causing the real wheels to loose traction. Todays 911s have much more power but are way more manageable due to all the electronic driver aids Porsche has in the engine management system. Back in the years of the 930 I sold Porsche cars and learned quickly how sensitive the car was. Just the same the 930 is my favorite 911.
Just listening and watching the fuel pressure when it quit I figured ign system but NEVER would've thought to check the polarity at the distribuitor. Would've re-clocked it and scratched myhead.

There were so many issues with this car it was hard to point to just one thing. This is a common problem with 50 year old cars that have been through so many different mechanics. With the ignition system there is so much mis-information out there on the web these days that it sends people in the wrong direction. Even the parts availability from the manufacturer, Bosch, is wrong for these systems. So its no wonder that people dont understand how the systems work and how to repair them. Kurt
Kurt and Sara - I’ve been waiting for this vid! Longtime fan. You summarized so well, the editing was outstanding on what I imagine was a longer diagnostic process. Bravo! Really enjoyed the bits on circuit diagnostics. Would love to see more of that! Wiring is always a mess or hack. I am curious - the WUR was a dual diaphragm 054. Replaced with which #? Was it not matched w the airmeter # and does it matter if the iron vs alum fuel head is used? I don’t recall, but one fuel head flows better is it the 3.3 versions? For WUR rebuilds local rebuilder in AZ? Im in CA.

The WUR for this car was the 022 and no the 054 was not matched to anything in the 3.0L turbo. The WUR and Fuel distributor had been rebuilt by a rebuilder that just does bad work. The fuel distributor had a pressure leak in it that when the sensor plate was pushed down control pressure would drop. The warm up regulator pressures were no where close to where they should be even for an 054 regulator and the 3.0L systems are not designed for that regulator anyways. The aluminum fuel distributors where used on the 1986 models and on and are also designed to be used with KE-jetronic. This makes them less than ideal to use on anything earlier without modification. Kurt
Awesome vid Kurt.... one clever man are you!!! Would love you to check my 1989 3.3 turbo out ... shame i'm in the UK!!

Love all your videos and they have been such a great help. I own the same car 1976 turbo. And I am going through some issues also. You said it had the wrong WUR. And the one you had there was 054. Can you tell me what is the correct one for a 76 turbo 3.0? Thank u to oh so much and look forward to the next videos.

The 054 regulator is for the 3.3L 930 models 1978-85. The 76 3.0L should have an 022 warm up regulator on it. Kurt

6k later all is good. CIS is a nightmare! In 1995 the 993 was introduced, Porsche world transitioned to the modern era. Can’t believe what they are asking for pre 993 cars. Totally unacceptable and ridiculous. Like asking thousands for an 8 track player.
@klassikats

So at the time CIS was used it was the state of the art in fuel injection and was like any other automotive system a transition to what we see today. CIS is actually a very easy to understand and reliable system. It only becomes problematic when people change to parts that were not designed to use or allow contaminates to enter the system. One of the reasons why it was continued for so long in the 930 range is that it is impervious to electrical interference. This meant that Porsche could still use the Bosch CDI ignition system that provides the much greater spark energy needed to ignite the fuel air mixture when under boost. When it comes to the value or the price of these cars that is more what someone will pay than what a seller is asking. The fact that these cars command such a price is a testament to there build quality and the popularity of the car. It also speaks to a supply and demand. Back in the late 1980's when I worked for Porsche it was always their policy to supply less cars than the demand. That way the company can always have a demand for their product. You just have decide how badly you want one of theses cars and if you are willing to pay the going price. If its not for you then that's okay. Kurt
Kurt, What is the correct torque value for the valve covers and the intake manifold nuts? These are not in the workshop manual. Thank you Victor

Hi. What is your experience with the rear fuel pump on the 76 turbo vs the 77. I need a new rear pump and the 77 rear pump is 1/10th $ of the 76. Are you familiar with any differences between the two?

The 77 and on just usings slightly different fittings. I retrofit them into earlier cars all the time. Kurt
Kurt, What sparkplugs do you recommend for a stock, street driven 1986 930? Do you lubricate the threads? If so what product do you recommend? Is Anti seize contraindicated? Thank you, Victor

Bosch W3DPO spark plugs and you will only find them at the dealer. once they are gone there will be no correct plug available. Yes i still use copper grease even though Bosch no longer requires it. Kurt
