These jams contributed so much to expanding our consciousness and allowing us to “see” a glimpse of the universe as it is. We would fire up our bongs, pop a tape in and go canoeing all day. Talk about transcendental. My late brother was a Deadhead thru and thru and had a bootleg collection that would rival most collectors. RIP bro, this jams for you…

Trip-en and floating down River back to the truck's & Then Back to The Dead, up loud. Trip-en & laughing trying to get those conoes out of the River, lol, good ⏲️

Fascinating that as early as the second performance (2/15/73) they were already laying down the foundations of the minor and diminished jams. Garcia leads them hither and yon, going much farther out than the 2/9 debut. Kreutzman is really dialed in with all the tempo changes, lots of jazzy cymbal work punctuated with tom tom accents.

painting rafters of a porch over my brother's deck at age 66 with just one eye (recovering from (extraction there of) a baseball sized meningioma by my local neuro surgeon, (titanium mesh lath w/ sterile epoxy patch by a local crainio-plastic surgeon, and a nice bit of optic nerve disintangling from a cute little optic surgeon (kinda fucked up the eyelid muscle though, she apologized, I told her, I was ok with it, if she would be mine, she declined, but, cackled, anyway, forget all that, but, remember... anyway, thanks for this, I painted those rafters all afternoon, listening to this, I have hated lately, and have now today listening to this, drifted into a happy calm, starting to feel love again, really, really appreciate you posting this, makes me remember, my first dead show, baltimore, 1973, in 9th grade, and later, tampa, 1995, my last, hadn't had acid in 22 years, my eighteen yo son sent me a 10 strip, as a book marker, on the 81st page, of catcher in the rye, by Fed Ex, I'd forgotten what it felt like, but, dutifully, took 3, gave three, to a close friend visiitng for the weekend, to go see the show, had two other guys with us, we met at the air port, me and my buddy dosed, forgot about, all four of us shared some beer and a joint, and, on the way to Tampa Stadium, passed a famous strip bar, we were all in our late thirties, we met at a meditation college in Iowa in the 80s, followed the Maharishi, the beatles guru, that had faded for us, imported furniture together when we graduated, but, hadn't done acid since our teens, and, one of the guys insisted we stop, for a quick lap dance, and I was the host there in Tampa, lived with my 3rd wife, she was angry, I usally stayed away from strip bars, but, for my visitors, this was the Tanga Lounge, quite famous, these were young ladies jacked on coke or molly, not my thing, and, the lap dances, were no joke, I usherd my buddies to the door, as I put my hand on the handle, the door handle, I slightly, mildly, but, unmistakenly suddenly remembered, from years and years ago, oh shit, uh, is that what Acid felt like, just an inkling, metalic, a slight edginess, then, a majestic, maybe titanic wave of love, and wholeness, completeness, I looked ahead, and my buddy, he turned around, and glanced at me over his shoulder e, and holy hell, he felt it too, remembered then, life was long, very long, and, of course, it was a remarkable series of lap dances, Oh God in Heaven, I am so grateful, to have been, and, to be now, anyway, thanks, whoever you are

As another old 'boomer, it does take me back to the halcyon daze of my youth, and many Dead shows, even more Garcia shows, including the last time I saw him at Portland Meadows in the early 1990's, Chuck Berry opening, me on LSD (as usual). It was one of the best Garcia shows I ever say, and they were many. The Dead came around a year or so later for the last time, at the Meadows again - 3 days straight. Unfortunately the drugs had taken their toll, and they weren't their old self, so I partied all night long in the parking lot instead. What a night it was! LSD again, so I don't remember much, except it was magical. This music keeps the old vibe alive here and now!

Forget theory and chord progressions.... This art has nothing to do with that and more of the sounds of nature and love expressed in an impossible moment that came and went. This music to me is like that strange and truly personal moment when I am in the woods and I get that feeling. I look around and there is some wild animal that stops to take a look at me and I at them. We pause and I nod and apologize for my kind wrecking the place and in turn they understand and patiently wait for better times to come when the peace is permeant. Jerry and the band may have caught your eye at some point over the years. They are the bears in the wilderness that for just one moment we pass as we wait for things to come. This captures a little of that and really helps me enjoy the day.

@@stevenmetzendorf7063 YOU HIT THAT RIGHT ON THE HEAD. And I must say the timing is very cool. As a drummer friend told me, Mickey was one of the World's great percussionists, but at best a mediocre standard drummer. When he left around '69, Bill took hypnosis lessons and perfected his jazz/rock style. When Mickey returned, all that happened is the two were lashed together and had to find a common beat for everything. This produced the "Budweiser Mule Team" effect. Only a few musical pieces were successful, such as Sampson and Delilah and Hell in a Bucket. This caused an endless 4/4 machine that I firmly believe caused Jerry to develop carpal tunnel syndrome. It's all in the fluidity of a drummer that the guitarists can find the openness and flow allowing real creativity. The opposite is why their songs became very predictable. If Mickey had been kept as a background percussionist, it could have worked out. Anyway, as Man is the highest form of life on the planet, I believe we should act like it - Stay High!

What a great approach! Eyes is one of my very favorite songs in the world - one of the ones I play myself over and over, and let's face it, even though it has a charming lyric, in Dead performance basically a framework upon which to hang a jam or two and create a provocative transition to another tune or Space. Beautiful stuff -- a lovely idea. Thanks for compiling and uploading! Gotta say, I'm surprised the 02/26 and 02/28 jams, particularly the former, didn't make it in -- some of those are stunning, and so beautifully recorded too. But I don't mean to criticise -- what you're doing is great :)

I just took a stroll around the sun on the illuminated beams of sonic reverbrated visions with silhouettes cast on the backs of of oceans tides, over and over, wave upon wave, surfing to a new stride of growth and finding a path of colored paper mache gears that grind into mountians of gelatin earth, digging deeper into a place of sparkling speckled measures of space inside a glass glode perfect and refined by the richness of a plows hand, grabbing my flow and gently billowing the sails of continuation and realism to the fact of make believe.....i was listening to this

**EDIT** I just learned that the riff in question became the "Stronger Than Dirt" theme in "King Solomon's Marbles." I never put this together before, but now that I know this, I totally hear it. This also explains why I can't think of a single instance of it after 1975 and the release of "Blues for Allah." 18:51 28:21 35:36 44:38 1:20:46 This pops up in virtually all EotW jams through (at least) the "retirement" shows at Winterland. Does it have a name?

That's right. A couple PITB from that era also have a Stronger than Dirt/Milkin' the Turkey type jam. It was labeled on some of my old cassettes as "Eyes w/'73 ending." I've also heard people refer to a jam called "Pandemonium” when talking about these 73-74 era Eyes. Pretty sure they are talking about a primitive version of this riff that eventually evolved into the more sophisticated and polished riff we hear in King Solomon's Marbles. Thanks for listening so closely and commenting! Happy Jerry Sunday to you, my friends. If you are on twitter, you can follow me @justweiss

This little jam at the end of early Eyes Of The Worlds has always been my favorite part of the song, and until now I always just referred to it as "that 7/4 part at the end of Eyes", cool to learn it has an actual name and ended up in a different song. Also thanks for the timestamps, its interesting to listen to all of them in a row and really hear how they get more comfortable with it each time, especially Billy who goes from carefully accenting certain notes with the cymbals to throwing around the downbeat like its nothing

I remember this riff so well from back then! Thanks for the "stronger then dirt" , Yes! now I remember! I think they cycled back to it a thousand times one night! of course that was a very long, long trip that night. by sun rise I began to wonder, "where was I before all this happened?" See it all for the first time again.
