1973: Do you know your CRUMHORN from your SACKBUT? | Nationwide | Music | BBC Archive
Ойын-сауық
Crumhorn, sackbut and shawm may sound like a firm of solicitors but they are in fact some of the early musical instruments which were on display at an event in London in 1973. Nationwide's Brian Ash went along to take a look (and listen) and found some surprisingly named instruments, such as the marine trumpet which is not very trumpet like at all…
The instruments featured in this clip are guitar, cornetto, marine trumpet, serpent, rackett, harpsichord, curtal, dulzaina and cornamuse.
Clip taken from Nationwide, originally broadcast on BBC One, Friday 21 September, 1973.

I can feel my Shatner’s bassoon resonating to this.
Well now. When I saw " Early Music Show" I certainly wasn't expecting a Trade Show from 50+ years ago. The organisers rmissed a trick: they should've invited David Munrow along with some of his Early Music Consort to show visitors how bright and brilliant some these instruments can sound in the hands of experts. Btw is that Christopher Monk at 1.00 minute?
4:24 impromptu? Pretty damn good.
Nowadays we have the recorder, otamatone and kazoo!

They are available, just don't get used in all kinds of music. Look for "early music"

Some of these were used for popular music of the time.

"What's it called?".... "It's called a racket" . Indeed, and verily... forsooth.
(2:45) The rackett. (3:15) He beat me to the punchline.

The Marine Trumpet is from Atlantis, because it can talk to whales. Like mimic their sounds, hear it now?
Is it a coincidence that every single instrument is out of tune? ... or is that a feature?

It took some time to learn how to play them in tune. Also, it depends on your playing level. As in another comment here, if they'd brought in David Munrow's group you would have heard more advanced playing.
