1973: DJ DAVID v GOLIATH | Nationwide | Weird and Wonderful | BBC Archive

Ойын-сауық

In one corner, it’s dinner-jacketed drumming DJ Frank Peacock, in the other, BBC pop personality Jimmy Young. Who would you rather spend your morning listening to?
It’s hardly a fair competition. Young straddles the British airwaves with his team of producers, Frank has his budgie help him pick out records to play in his garden. Jimmy has smoothly scripted radio patter, pensioner Frank has the pitter-patter of the drum set on which he plays along to the songs.
And as the final ignominy, Frank has to face off against the Bavarian brass band that play in the park opposite his garden. Come on, Frank! Get paradiddling!
Clip taken from Nationwide, originally broadcast on BBC One, Monday 14 May, 1973.

What a lovely old fella. I hope to do this when I'm older, but playing along to joy division and smiths records instead 😅

I'm a carer and I've always wondered what we'll be listening to if we end up in a residential home. The Smiths - yeah! but hopefully not Joy Division. I never liked those miserable gits.

@@whatamalike 😉 You wouldn't believe the arguments over biscuits I've seen. "SHE knew I wanted that last pink wafer biscuit and she took it on purpose!"

A fabulous report. When people were more human, more free thinking & imaginative, when we had free press and some very good politicians who could debate each other uninterrupted by sound bites. Whilst technology has improved, humanity has declined.

Can't argue with any of that. We now live in a society led by vacuous anti-social media, like a bull with a ring through it's nose, and useless self-important politicians who acquiesce to whatever fringe minority shouts the loudest. I'm so glad to be old enough to remember when it wasn't this way... 😞

Two wise commenters, as someone on the cusp of 40 I remember a pre mobile phone and internet existence, my generation is the last to experience the freedom that allowed.
