1972: GILBERT O'SULLIVAN on Songwriting | Sounding Out | Classic BBC Music | BBC Archive
Музыка
Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan in his work-room, singing and accompanying himself on the piano. He chats about how he composes his music, his percussive style of piano playing, weird chord progressions and his tendency to put ridiculous lyrics on top of beautiful melodies.
This clip is from Sounding Out, originally broadcast 6 March, 1972.

One of the greatest (underrated?) songwriters of the past 60 years. Melodies and lyrics - sublime. I love his work and hope he comes back to Aussie for another tour ASAP.
He has been a special talent since the day I first heard him in 1971.
Gilbert released an album this year. Man's got some serious longevity. 😎
Even then he was a bit eccentric and he hasn't lost that mystique. He pops up every so often with a new release. 🇮🇪☘️👏
Nothing Rhymed is a masterpiece.

Alone Again Naturally ...is timeless too
This is fascinating. His approach to writing and playing is so unique but he explains it all in such an open and articulate way. A genius.
Its satisfactory to notice Gilbert OSullivan is gaining commercial success these days. If people in general would recognise this man has been releasing stellar music for the last 40 years......1970-1980 is Gilbert O'Sullivans golden commercial successful years but the years 1980-2015 brought consistently marvellous music as well!
Amazing to see RAM by McCartney on the top of his record collection
That was really interesting. Great guy and amazing haircut.
A 25 year old Gilbert OSullivan. He's already released his debut album but that point and it was a great success. Even more spectacular chart success would follow in 1972 and 1973.
Hes like a happy roy keane lol Just that look sometimes maybe just me..... Apart from that this is amazing to see how the best start out and how they are inspired. It all starts from youth and that passion, how i hate being older and missing those inspirational days.

"a happy Roy Keane" is the greatest comparison ever 😂 how have I never noticed it!?
Interesting what inspires this Great Songwriter, and how he works. Love the lyrics he chose for Permissive Twit.
This was awesome. Gives me confidence that he writes like me
I've always gone by the saying that if you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing. I'm not going to break with that now - he has the best, most perfect, bowl haircut I've ever seen.
Amazing Artist, Amazing hair cut.....
His haircut was all the rage in the 15th century.
G e n i o. !!!!!🇦🇷❤
Genius
I've been a fan ever since he first became known, but never realised he was Irish. I always imagined he was from Yorkshire or Lancashire. Never actually heard him talk before. Such a lovely guy ! Reminds me of Graham Fellows character Jilted John 😂
Nice hat!
ヤバかっこいいからね♪- ̗̀ 📯 ̖́-♪❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
i only came here for the hair
And all those comic operas he wrote too!
Very talented man but jeez, I know it was the 70's but his hair....😳
Would love to hear this song of his 'Don't Dictate To Me' 🙏
Love Mr Sullivan ..That Hair
that's a great cat right there (on his head)
That hair!
THE HAIR😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Excellent songwriter with hair like a pencil eraser
Good god I forgot he had that haircut at that year!
Gilbert looks so young there! But I don't think his songwriting methods have changed one bit...and he's still churning them out....hair's changed though.

One thing has changed though. He is well past the "oo, minor chords, how great" and "oo seventh chords, how great" stage. Within a relatively short time he started putting out music with very subtle and brilliant chord progressions with major 6ths, major ninth, minor sixth, diminished and augmented chords.

@@BBCArchive Hello! Thank you ever so much for your very kind message. Very good of you to upload this clip. Superb! I wondered if it might be possible to broadcast the complete programme sometime on BBC 4? Or your "labi Siffre In Concert" 1972 programme? Thank you again. My very best wishes. Martin

This was mid 70s? His hair cut is very 90s Britpop

This was filmed in late 1971.
This man is a genius, however, he clearly lost some kind of bet that resulted in this hairstyle, which I’m guessing hasn’t been en vogue since about 1735.
