Fun fact: Gilbert was bigger than Elton John in 1971/1972, at least in the UK and Holland😍

The night this aired on TV in England, I had settled in with my grandparents, in their bungalow in Great Clacton, to watch what we thought was a night of Gilbert & Sullivan in Concet .... yes, we all misread the TV Times. So glad we watched it though. It made a lasting impression on me. Still a fan after all these i years.

Wow! A time capsule. I remember watching this on TV. I recorded it with a cassette player, microphone balanced near the speaker on the TV. I played it endlessly after. So much so that after 43 years I sang almost every word to every song when watching this.

I recognize most of the titles in an LP of his that I listened to a looooong time ago. Hours over hours, days over days. Such a rich palette of harmonies and emotions.... why can't today's pop musicians manage to raise above the trite, desolate dung coming out of radios and tv's all the time?

It’s looks and sex over musical substance now, it started going downhill around 1986-7 when Stock Aitken and waterman came on the scene with every song they put out all sounding the same and jive bunny didn’t help either. 😂

One of my favorite albums, Himself, from 1971. I had not only the American release but the British release. I also bought the songbook for Himself and I still have it. Sadly, his next album wasn't nearly as good. Gone were the really meaningful songs with those great lyrics. I can't help but think his manager, Gordon Mills, told him to write love songs. Gilbert later went on to sue Mills. Their contract said part of all the money he made was to go to his mother, part was to go to him for a little spending money, and the rest was to be put in savings. Mills decided to keep most of the money himself and got caught. Gilbert won a settlement of ~$15 million pounds. I have to admit I liked his song Clair because it's based upon a true story about Gilbert babysitting Mills' daughter Clair. Also, in case you don't know it, Raymond O'Sullivan was taught to play drums and piano by his best schoolboy chum Rick Davies. Gilbert played drums in Rick's band, Rick's Blues Boys. After the graduated the went their own ways - Ray changing his name to Gilbert and Rick Davies forming a rock group named Supertramp.
