IMO Spassky is why Bobby won the '72 WCT Probably no other player would have endured Bobby's intolerable behavior Don't get me wrong BF was the better player His achievements in chess are unparalleled But had Boris not given in to his demands The match would have never have been finished And I doubt Fisher would ever have played again. Many thanks for this great video analysis of games. In my research of Bobby Fischer games, he seems to be one of the most accurate world chess champions ever, especially when factoring in the complexity of positions. Many thanks for doing this Bobby Fischer video. I am a great fan of Fischer the chess player - not the person though. I feel Fischer ought to have been given help at the right time and it was a shame for the chess world he didn't play Karpov and extend his reign a little longer potentially. Cheers, K

Key metric is to check out the accuracy of players compared with chess engine play. According to this, Fischer had a 97.51% alignment with modern engines. Carlsen is slightly higher... BUT... Carlsen has grown up playing with the help of engines. One could argue that much of modern chess is who can memorize the most engine moves. So having the highest accuracy according to engine play before engines is simply INSANE. Bobby was the goat OTB. Too bad he went crazy...

Just curious, were you rooting for Fischer? He seems like such an unlikeable drama queen looking back at it. I wasn't born at the time of the match, so it would be interesting to know what the contemporary perspective of him was.

@@irjake At the time, I just thought that Fisher was the 'great white hope' to beat the Russians at a game that they had dominated for years.. I knew about him, but I was surprised by how emotionally unstable he became. He did a lot to raise the profile of the game of chess, and to improve the conditions for everyone. We can thank him for the time-increment idea, and, of course, the Fisher Random idea. Yes, I was rooting for him to win, and when he did, the worldwide chess community was looking forward to a long and glittering reign as world champion, but it was not to be. His demons caught up with him, and, for reasons that were never clear, he refused to defend his title against Anatoly Karpov. He just faded into obscurity until he re-emerged for that replay against Spassky. His tirade against the USA cost him his US citizenship, and only Iceland was prepared to give him sanctuary. I find it all so very sad.

@@halfway7690 he lost his US citizenship because of the 1992 tournament with Spassky. It was played in a war torn area that we had sanctions on. He was a fugitive from justice til he caught in Japan without a valid passport.

But he had at least three things things going for him---he was always fighting to improve chess, it was not unusual for him to walk out in the middle of a tournament fought for more money for the players--he had the highest Fide rating by far, he had proven he was the best by crushing- Petrosian, Korshnoi, Benko, etc Won The US Open 11/0 several times.. Don't know how old you are but I would go to see the candidate matches. Bobby Fisher to chess was like Mohammad Ali was to boxing. He was the best..World Title or not.

I was there ... following the games in the newspaper, that is, and playing them out with my cousins in Summer of 1972 - this is a very, very good video - I spent that summer in Cali, Colombia, and the whole world was, indeed, watching - it was everything people say it was !!

Much is said nowadays about Fischer, but truth be told... this was the very moment where the World Chess Championship had any matter of mainstream. Bobby with his neurotics and Boris with his sportsmanship. I love this match and a lot of people got into chess because of this moment in chess history.

Bobby Fischer just didn't show up because of a cameraman.

Trouble is a lot of the game isn't shown, it's really more of a puzzle devised by IM Jeremy Silman. That being said, Ron not only had to avoid getting checkmated, but he had to do so while avoiding losing a Rook (Hermione) and a Bishop (Harry).

As someone who lived during the 1972 chess world championship, I do recall the excitement and interest in chess. I was invited to help form a chess club in the high school wherein I was a student. Thank-you for this abbreviated recap of that tournament.

Technically true, but psychologically it's different. When it is Fischer (who's only a challenger) that demands things, and those demands are met, and he's effectively deciding about the conditions, it becomes HIS match, HIS territory. It's a psychological blow to the ego of the reigning champion. Is it rational? No, but humans aren't 100% rational creatures.

I truly appreciate it your summary of the 1972 world Chess championship. I was just a kid at the time but even I remember how big it was for Bobby Fischer to win that championship in the Cold war era.

I love it whenever Levy makes Yugioh references in these vids. 😂

I was 21 in 1972 and although not a chess ‘player’ I was fully immersed in the politics and mind games. How Bobby withstood all that pressure was unfathomable. But, as you so rightly say, the pressure on that gentleman Boris Spassky was equally oppressive. The games had the headlines in all newspapers across the world and deservedly so. Chess was like tiddlywinks to the uninitiated. I remember it well as one of the ‘sporting’ challenges of my lifetime and it alerted the world to the beauty of the game. Steve

Chess was huge in the Soviet Union, it was on par with hockey and football (soccer) over there. The Soviets even paid their good chess players a salary to simply study and play the game. They were also famous for teamwork at the top level of the game, there were no show offs per say, it was more of a team or fellowship environment which is why they were so good at the game back then.

this is really good material, man, because you're not only mechanically playing, but you are story telling, and you're good at it, and it is historical, therefore it is needed, it is a great service for chess and for entertainment

"Bobby Fischer goes to war : how the Soviets lost the most extraordinary chess match of all time" by David Edmonds is a good read. He goes deeper into each player using behind the scenes sources in Russia to explain the political mechanisms that interfered in the matches. He also covers the inner circle around Fisher to give a balanced view of the whole event. It is more history book than chess book.

I really enjoyed this and your commentary helped me understand the games quite well (and especially the drama surrounding the tournament). Thanks! One small critique: I'm relatively beginner in chess and didn't realize in your game 6 commentary initially that the players were now on different sides of the board compared to games 1, 3, and 5 and was confused after I realized it and had to rewatch the commentary. Understanding that the video is more about the championship rather than a specific player, I think it would have made it easier for me to follow if the players had stayed on the same sides as if we were watching from one perspective - maybe Spassky's as he was the champion at the time?

@@aleksaprelic9827 lol, really? It's about a world chess champion and you say it's not about chess? What was the reason for his mental health declining? Not chess? In the first game they show after Bxh2 Bobby resigned and stated it as a blunder whereas Bobby missed one idea some moves later which Levy explained very nicely. I feel if you show chess, then show it correctly else don't show it. That's the only reason for queens gambit becoming a success since chess is correct in it.

i found it mediocre to be honest (loads of narrative cliches), and Maguire totally miscasted as Fischer. i wonder what it is that makes one consider it a "really good movie".

honestly my favorite things about these videos, is i watched them months ago and now it's fun to go back and rewatch them when i can someone understand the ideas

Tal v. Botvinnik or Spassky v. Petrosian... would be my suggestions...both because of the dynamics of personalities and style as well as the fact that many of the old soviet masters are highly instructive and are woefully underappreciated

except fischer actually knows what he's doing and he backs that up with his creativity and genius in games. Unlike players who just memorize openings without doing anything special. I'm sure you see the difference.

Day 89: Of requesting Levy to cover opposite coloured bishop endgames. Especially when you have a slight material advantage of being up by two or three pawns against your opponent and you both have opposite coloured bishops as well.

from the moment he became WC he had nothing to gain and (in his mind) everything to lose. It makes Kasparov's reign triply impressive - his longevity and the way he dominated consecutive generations. Kaspy is the god of chess. Fischer is Loki.

i think it's the opposite. he had already been (kind of) insane, but held it together thanks to chess - and a clear goal he could fixate on. once this was gone, his mind had nothing to hold onto and began falling apart.
