It's nice to see those old Mercedes still running on the roads

…there’s a couple of Pagodas around here in the SF Bay Area. I still have my late Grandparent’s ‘71 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet and a ‘72 280 SEL 4.5 which my Grandfather had gifted me in 1985 for my 16th birthday a year prior his passing. I call her “Bertha” and she been a constant joy all throughout.

@@skymuffn You have a nice little collection. I call my R107 SL “Beige Bertha.” I got the inspiration from Karl Benz’s wife (Bertha) and from the color Light Ivory which is a very 80s shade of beige

@@517sf6 … funny that’s what she was named after. I always saw my Grandmother as one badass woman just like Bertha Benz. In 1989 she decided not to drive anymore that’s when she left me all her vehicles, I was the closest to her. I ended up with her last car, an almost brand new 1985 MBZ 300 TD Turbo Diesel, which I named “Betsy” after the most alluring Mrs. Bloomingdale who was a close acquaintance of Gran. Every time I see these cars in my garage it brings me back and I’m grateful for it.
the engine sound almost brings me to tears
This is the era when Mercedes was truly Mercedes.. In the mid to late 80s when I was a younger kid and these were still common in the wild as daily drivers, I used to love seeing them. I loved the design of the interiors and exteriors. To think at that time those cars were maybe 15 years old but they seemed so much older. I would love to have a merc from this era.
Now THAT'S a nice car. Hopefully no rust underneath...
Nothing like vintage drive therapy! Great stuff Tedward!!
This is my favorite Mercedes. I love the color matching hubcaps. I am lucky enough to have inherited a 2004 SLK 230 Special Edition, and I love driving it. I'm still getting used to driving it, as it has a supercharged 4 Cylinder Engine. Thanks for the ridealong, Tedward.
So cool to see these old cars still going.
Dream car.
I absolutely love this car
If you are lucky you can still spot them daily in Germany. Beautiful cars that just refuse to die.

The credit goes to people that are eager to put horrendous money into to keep them alive and don't do any mileage.
It's always the best stuff that comes from BONNND Group. Great video as always.
Why does it sound better than most modern day cars? :O
@nirfz

Because noise and emission regulation were more or less in their infancies
Fun fact: The "loose" gas pedal is something that a lot of old mercedes have. Makes it a lot easier to just "tap" the gas and hold a certain speed on the autobahn or straight roads.
That has a beautiful sounding engine similar to my Mercedes SLK 350 V6 3.5L of 2012!
This is, for now;), my dreamcar to once own. Many thanks again Tedward for your amazing videos!!
Probably one of my favourite Mercedes cars of all time. I feel that when you look at them nowadays, you don't just see a classic car, you see a luxurious classic car. Such a timeless design in my opinion. Everything looks so sleek, but my favourite part is the steering wheel, especially the way you gotta use the horn.
Fun fact, my friend has a 1961 SL and I had Mercedes-Benz classic Center quote me a full restoration and they told me it was gonna cost $650,000. Crazy

@@hassyg4083 well the thing is in America, everything is bigger. That includes the wealth gap. Doesn’t matter if our country has the most millionaires of any other country in the world (around 18 million of them in USA alone iirc), even China.
This car was very advanced for it’s time, especially compared against it’s American counterparts(which were cool, but I mean c’mon). Looks and sounds good too
I remember growing up with 300Es, 240Ds, and The Mercedes Cosworth. This Mercedes is built like a tank. The THUNK of the closing door. This car is not an ornament. It lowkey says that the owner has style and sophistication.
Ted: You do such a good job of explaining the antique cars. I really enjoy the old stuff. All of stainless or chrome interior gauges and pieces. Just such a lovely car. ❤
Such a classy cruiser
That is a proper jewel..... fascinating car!

My all time dream car
I LOVE these! Perfect proportions, design, sound and comfort! And still quite cheap considering the category of car…
This video made me happy, thank you! It sounds so good and looks so fun.
Such a classic, absolute dream car!!!
Absolutely mesmerized by your 1971 Mercedes Benz 280SL Manual POV video! I had the pleasure of seeing one of these in person at a car meet, and they've got a hell of a presence. This car would be right at home cruising down Bellevue Ave in Newport on your way for some brunch.
That sound 🥹
Beautiful car! Need one of those!
its like a bank vault.. THUNK! man that door sounds nice
3:33 About that, my grandad had a red 280SL when they were dirt cheap and his dad was stationed in Germany. They drove the crap out of it, eventually destroying it when they smacked the oil pan on a stump while on an offroading escapade. The oil pan didn't break, but the engine mounts sure did, the whole motor was shifted back about three inches. That being said, those old Mercedes are still incredibly tough, my story isn't really representative of their durability under normal usage. 😂
Even the clock works. A wonderful car.
Old (at least pre 2000) Mercedes are just tanks. I love my 190E 2.0, 320.000km, still drive it daily and it NEVER made any problems, even tho I kick the little engine from time to time :P
Damn gorgeous
Impossibly beautiful and yet still practical cars.
Love to have a classic like this
I Love your videos Tedward. 😍

@@fthyme87 yes the 280 sl has a diffrent cam than a 280 se ,they make 195 gross hp instead of 170 gross hp or 180 gross hp that i've seen listed.
Nissan 240z,260z and 280z used this engine. sounds exactly like a s30 Z car
you only have to drive the 230 sl next, no new mercedes gets close to this.

hey Tedward, do these cars come with a hard top and a soft top i guess i might be confused on the roof situation lol

It’s a shame that Mercedes convertibles are usually automatics, because a manual transmission really brings these cars alive. And it’s not like Mercedes made lousy manuals, so it’s not like there was a reason to avoid them. Probably the most impressive feature of these old Mercedes is the level of quality, as long as you kept them from rusting they really were made to last. It’s a good thing they didn’t need constant repairs, because the only downside to owning one is repair bills.

As a Mercedes fan, I can still say that Mercedes manuals were quite poor and notchy with a very long throw.
Niiice car - but the steering wheel has the size of a 24 inch alloy wheel
Put some white walls on it.
Goddamn it, this isn't helping my lust for one

The front lights of a European model look a lot better, imho.
В какой это стране? Почему рель справа ?)
I owned one of these for years. Beautiful to look at, but honestly, not great to drive. Floaty, poor handling by modern standards and high revving on the highway. Its nice for just tooling around a beach town and looking good.
The steering is soooo loose on that car it's dangerous
Такое ощущение, что тахометр показывает обороты выше, чем на самом деле
