My first car was a 71 charger with a 318,metal flake blue with a white vinyl top. That was the prettiest car I have ever seen. It wasn't a hot rod but I loved it. Your video brought back some good memories. I do miss that car.

Those are window guides that’s all they are supposed to keep the window tight to the seal if I remember correctly. In newer cars they are hidden in the tracks not exposed so you never see them but they are there even in newer model cars just had to change some out on my little Honda Accord and I wish they were exposed they were a pain in my arse! By the way new subscriber I enjoy seeing these old cars being saved especially seeing your son help he doesn’t know how lucky he is to have a dad that is around not all of us had such luxuries enjoy young man you one of the lucky ones

If I could give your son some advice , it would be to keep this 71 Charger no matter what because this car will become like a member of the family in years to come. Trust me on this. If you pull the rear window out of the 71, make sure you take note which way it’s seated in the window frame, because Ive talked to guys that put their rear windows in the wrong way and then they leaked like crazy. I know this is a real problem on 68 and 69 Chargers for sure, not sure about 71’s though. Still wanted to pass it along. Such a nice 71 Charger you have found! Subscribed!

Those pieces on around the door is like a guid for the window to hold tight they are not only Mopar specific if you see a old firebird camaro they all have that same piece and it's a guide to hold the window tight because it has no frame to sit in like Sedan cars do

While you are at it, change the oil pump. It's mounted on the outside of the engine, unlike most others. It's easy to do, it's where the oil filter bolts up. Only four bolts and you're done, very import for something that's sat for many years. I ruined a 1973 400 cu (Charger SE) by not paying attention to the oil pressure gauge. By the time I replaced the oil pump something gave out. I was told by the previous owner that the oil sending unit, or gauge was going bad, not true. I had a lot of fun polishing off 5.0 mustangs and camaros the spring of 1989 with that car.

@@charliefrisbie3764 I'm going to one-up you!! I had a 1973 Dodge Charger SE with the SlapStik trans and a 400 2bbl. I love improvising things and making do with what I have so, I got a camshaft from a 440 Magnum and shoved it in there, BlackJack headers and Through-Turbo mufflers. To keep the engine from twisting when coming off the line, I used a short chain and a turn buckle to strap down the engine to the frame, simulating solid motor mounts! To top that off, I had hood pins installed and instead of the clip holding the the hood down, I affixed the hood pins so that the clip was approximately 2" above the hood. (Keep that in mind as I describe what I did when I was street racing here in Detroit) In the trunk of my car, I carried both an 800cfm Carter ThermalQuad carburetor attached to an Edelbrock StreetMaster intake AND a Holly 780 CFM vacuum secondary carburetor attached to a Holley Street Dominator intake! When I got to The Castle (rendezvous point of where we showed our car off on weekends and yeah talked) to discuss racing parameters, I would pick one of the two and slap it on in 10 minutes and go race! Once I took off from the line, I would pull the hood latch release lever which would cause the hood to pop up but stop 2 inches because of the hood pins, creating the world's largest hood scoop!!! You could literally feel the car take off faster once I slapped it in the second gear!

If this one was mine i would pull the rear bumper and finish peeling the chrome then sandblast and paint it, Plus of course do the front to match, If the front bumper is in real good shape you might want to find one that is peeling like the rear to paint, They did come that way and it's a lot cheaper than rechroming! And it's time for your son to learn to weld! Those fenders need some work that he could do!

@@PoorBoysGarageUSMC It doesn't need a full restoration. Mainly, I would prevent rust by taking it to a self serve car wash and spray waxing the underside, trunk drops and other potential rust spots. Also, silicone tire shine protects mufflers. It looks to me like the rust around the rear window is small enough to just caulk and paint. The trunk corners can probably be crudely fabricated tacked in and seam sealed. They are a compound curve so they would take some hammering and shaping, but they are under the trunk lid so they won't show anyway. Of course the undercoat paint should cure before spray waxing, but I would still do it because that spray wax gets into every seam like paint never could.

Not really a slap shifter exactly... A B&M Ratchet shifter with the cool T-handle is a slap shifter, so you can bang it as hard as you want and it’ll only shift up one gear when shifting manually 1, 2, D (3). What’s in there is just a fragile ugly stock -handle auto shifter with a push button that needed to be depressed to move the lever. Crappy shifter I had in my ‘69 mustang with the auto trans was the same but different. Just a gear selector lever.

Sorry @@invictusbp1prop143 but, this is a "SlapStik", as it says on the center console. Although the T-handle was of poor material and construction, it was truly a ratchet-section gear selector. As mentioned in other comments here, I owned a '73 Dodge Charger SE (and president of a Mopar/Charger social club in Detroit back in the '70s) with a slapstick and I could bang the crap out of it and it only advanced one gear at a time. Yes, I was replacing the T-handle every two years but it truly was a "SlapStik"
