It is said that Jushiro Konoe said before leaving home for filming this scene, “well, let me go now and give Shintaro a hard time”. Konoe is one of the best Japan has produced when it comes to sword fight. This scene is just stunning, mesmerizing, powerful and unforgettable. It is also aesthetically satisfying. Wonderful scene. I love these old Zatoichi movies so much. 💯
I love the ending! He chose not to kill Ichi because Ichi really branded the comment about how samurai's don't have feelings and just do what they are told because they are orders. Samurai's die for their lords without question and he really questioned his honor right on then because Ichi was serving the welfare of the people rather than the welfare of government orders. He got bested by Ichi and the samurai knew he was going to bleed to death but understood at that moment that Ichis honor was better than the samurai. Ichi had a purpose. The samurai didn't really know exactly what his purpose was beyond his lords orders. It was a question of life and death at that moment and the samurai would rather die on a peaceful walk back to his lord rather than die caused by someone else.

These Ichi movies are highly superior to anything "modern". I stumbled upon one with this actor much older, 'The Return of Ichi' maybe? I really don't recall the title, but what began as channel surfing and watching a few minutes ended when the movie did. I can CRY for the characters. EVEN the villains! It drew me in and glued me in place! Because it is ENTERTAINING! The new "modern" movie making has nothing to do with creating anything. It's all preaching non-reality and stunning visuals. People with no life experience are now given ridiculous amounts of resources to make massive movies, but have nothing to draw upon except their flawed and fallacious "educations".

Brilliant. Outstanding.
This scene is from Zatoichi Challenged, which was released in 1967. Not 1970's
Amazing and beautiful cinematography without feeling too artificial, and quite good choreography as well. From a time where there was actual care with such things I guess.
incredibly intense. That was beautiful.
These little snippets of film are great for filmmakers to learn from.
That was hands down one of ichis best fight scenes
Always great to see Miwa on screen. A bit of a shame that she had no chance to sing in any of her Zatoichi movies. Unlike the first Daimajin movie, the first film I saw her in and fell in love with her. It was also her inclusion that brought me to the Zatoichi series. Now, one of my favorite franchises of all time.
There was and will alwyas be only one Zatoichi: Shintaro Katsu.
Fantastic scene. Gonna watch this movie this weekend for sure
Well played algorithm. Well played.
The epic fight scene captured nicely.
I love zatoichi one of the greatest gifts Redbox ever gave.

Nothing happened, you just stopped watching good Japanese productions. It's you, not japanese cinema.
Oh man!! Each one is such a badass movie!! Hands down my favorite series of movies!! American movie series ain’t got nothing on this!! Katsu was a beast!! If ya like him, or that character, check a look at his role as Hanzo the Razor!! Lol!! Creepy perv badass!!

The mastery that went into each scene. Wonderful
they dont make movies like this, anymore where the acting the music and over all " THE TALENT " Commands the attention of the viewers and takes them into another place and era. now all we see is CGI Garbage fest, with "SUPER HEROS" flying around , here the Hero and underdog Ichi, is blind, but can see through people's soul, flaws, and love. is willing to die for what's RIGHT!
This is so heavy.. damn.
It is a "Zatoichi" movie. In Japanese "座頭市".
The samurai spared the blind swordman just like Roy letting Deckard live in Blade Runner.
Love your work, classic
What great films these were.
I like this old movies
Le samuraï est un acteur hors paire...
It's not "Zotoichi". I's ZATOICHI: The Blind Swordsman.
Z stabbed A? I thought he bit him on his right shoulder, rendering that arm useless. I did not see the stab. That is why A screamed in horror. Thanks for explaining the ending. The trail of blood says that he was mortally wounded. Great filmmaking!
