I owned one of those in 1972. Comp green. It kept cracking pistons so i totally rebuilt it with different forged pistons and better camshaft. I never raced it but it sure was a joy on the street. I eventually sold it not knowing what i know now. I kick myself in the ass every day.

Eliminator is such a badass name for a car.

This may well be my personal favorite pony car. It simply is much more refined and tasteful than a lot of the others. Case in point, my uncle was a senior engineer at FoMoCo that helped to establish their Brazilian division. He drove nothing but Mercurys, not because he couldn't afford a Lincoln, but because he genuinely preferred the brand named after the only naturally occurring liquid metal. In 1971, He purchased a Cougar XR7 that was a demonstrator. It was fully loaded, with power steering, power brakes, 351 cu. V8 with an Autolite 4 barrel carburetor, automatic transmission, and AM/FM stereo. It was cloudy silver on the outside with a fawn brown interior. When my mother was going to college, she begged him for his car, but he refused because it was too much power for her to handle. I don't know where the car ended up after that. Back to the present. If I were to actually buy a pony car, it would either be the Mercury Cougar or the AMC Javelin. The rest I would not even consider.

I'd take a Cougar over a Mustang. Overall a nicer car and Mustangs are a dime a dozen at car shows. My favorite Cougar is either this one or a 68 GT-E 7 Litre with the 390 horsepower 427 engine. It's the only production car from Ford that still had the 427 on the option list in 68.....even though it wasn't the 425 horsepower dual quad R-Code 427

The ultimate Cougar! The 1969/70 Boss 302 Cougar. The Eliminator had engines from the Boss 302, to the 351 2V and 4V Cleveland to the big Daddy, the R code 428 Super Cobra Jet ! 😍😎👍🏻

Besides the Studebaker Avanti, the Mercury Cougar Eliminator is my second favorite all time muscle car. 302, 427 or 429, I love it's power and style.

I liked the scenery change with the outside static shots. Also, having the tails lit when inside was a nice touch! As always, another terrific example of classic car coolness. Thanks for the ride.

I'm a mustang guy for sure but this style cougar is one of the loves of my life. a guy that lived down the street from me as a kid had one. it from top to bottom was a candy maroon fading to charcoal in the center and back to maroon. that thing was so pretty it was unbelievable. definitely one of my favorite cars of all time.

Car life magazine tested one in 70. Super drag pack equipped, 4.33 gears. Good for 15 seconds in quarter mile. Said the solid lifters and 4.33 gears made it sound like a day in the cannery works.

I love the small block cars I personally think that a hyperactive small block can sometimes make up for the brute torque of a big block just in weight savings and I think the small block cars can be a little quicker cornering due to the weight difference but maybe a little Slack coming out of the corner do to lacking a little bit of torque all in all a small block is a lot of fun

**I guess Mercury HAD to put a Boss 302 in the Cougar, due to Cougars racing in the Trans Am series at that time, which required homologation.** But Ford tended to put almost every engine they produced for other Ford cars, into Cougars. There are Cougars from 1967-1971 that came with all these engines: 289, 302, Boss 302, 351C, 351W, 390, 427, 428CJ, 429CJ, Boss 429. That is a LONG list of engine options!

Love the Cougar but I think I love the shop better. I'm guessing it's about 8' between the posts on the hoists, and maybe 6' between the hoists. Can you give me some closer dimensions? I like that spacing and will soon be building a shop. Thanks Kevin (or ? :) ).

The guy i sold it to missed a shift and blew it up. We tried for six months to find a cylinder head and we found one 1969 head (larger valves) and that was a very long time ago. There were no forums back then....Matter of fact we didn't even have internet back then.
