Thanks Lou for letting me know about this car! One of these got me into trouble. As a senior in high school, I had a nice conservative-looking 1971 Ford Ranchero Squire. Ofcourse the standard engine was a 351C-4V and had a C-6 automatic. I thought it was pretty hot and a real sleeper. I enjoyed blowing stock SS396 Camaro's off the road. Well, one evening, after dropping a date off, I was innocently driving home on the main drag. A person driving a Cougar Eliminator was looking for some action, and I gave it to him, kinda. With runs from stoplight to stoplight, he was always a little faster than me. At the last stoplight, I realized that my car definitely wasn't faster and wasen't even in the same class of performance. My hood didn't have a hood scoop and the Cougar did. I decided to give him a smoke-show. I put my car in neutral, watching for the cross street light to turn red. Soon as my light turned green I floored it and put it into 1st gear. My tires lit up and I filled the intersection with smoke. All you could see was dim headlights in the smoke. Well, I ended up laying two streaks of rubber 175 ft. long. How did I know? One of the motorcycle police officers went back and measured while the other officer wrote the ticket and put the length on it. The only time I ever came close to burning rubber like that again was at a decommissioned dragstrip and I was on my motorcycle. It wasn't until years later that I learned the Cougar Eliminator had a 428. That guy was just playing with me and I never had a chance!

I owned one of these 1970 Cougar Eliminators in the late eighties. It was the same color. Although it had a custom 351 Cleveland motor (with "ram air" package) and auto transmission with 4.11 gears. It also had power windows which this car clearly does not have. Other than the latter, it was identical. Unfortunately mine had detrimental rust in the forward frame. It was fun while it lasted. Then I sold it, with the warning about the frame, but the purchaser wanted it so bad he didn`t care. Very nice car indeed. It used to hold its own on the street in its day.

gene978 Yeah, I was just watching the 1969 Boss 429 episode of Jay Leno's garage, where he pointed out its price tag was about the same as ^this car's($5200), and he mentioned that, for several hundred dollars less, "you could buy a 427 Corvette". But after checking, it turns out that claim was inaccurate. The base price of the base model Corvette was $4700, and the base engined convertible Corvette was around $4450. In reality, it was more like $6200 for an L88 or L89 427 Corvette back then.

I think you figured out by now I'm die hard Mopar. But I love these cars. Around 35 yrs. ago, my dad adjusted the points, added headers, and set the carb. on a 69 or 70. I was in my early teens. But I still remember dust falling from the rafters, and the old one piece garage door creaking shut, from the vibration. I'm pretty sure it had the 351. It had the old Cragar SST on it. This car appears to have Alberta plates on it.. Nice car.

Great video Lou, Awesome car too! I had a chance to buy one of these cars, a 69 or 70 (I cannot remember for sure) with a Boss 302 engine, 4-speed trans, in good running condition, but rough paint, for $1200 about 20 years ago. I went to the bank to withdraw the money and while I was gone another guy slipped in and offered them a little over double ($2500) the money for it and just like that it was gone. I was almost sick when I got back and found they had already accepted his offer. I always think about it and wish I had had the sense back then to take cash with me in the first place. Seeing this one brings back that sick feeling of loss and what could have been.

I'm a Mopar guy but first gen Cougar's are one of the best looking and classiest muscle cars of that era in my opinion. I'd love to have a 68 Cougar GT-E 7 Litre(preferably an early production GT-E with the 427 Side Oiler but a 428 Cobra Jet would do just fine)or a 69-70 Eliminator BOSS 302. Always liked the 67-70 Cougar's better than the Mustang's of that era. Mustang's are a dime a dozen and Cougar's were a nicer car overall

I bought a 70 Cougar in 1977 for $700. Drove it 3 yrs and sold it for $750 to a silly girl who wrecked it within a week. If I'd kept in a garage without touching it I could ask $10,000 today no problem. The body was rust free, no dents. The dash was cracked on top and the seats were worn. Suspension needed a rebuild but drive train was flawless.

Hi Chester Au, Happy to read you had one like this :-) I think it was Dr. Seuss who said, "Don't be sad it's over. Be glad it happened." This helps me with people and things I no longer have, and I hope it helps you too, Lou

I also had a 1970 cougar xr7. Cloned it out as an eliminator in black on black on black. Took 2nd place in the tri-state auto show in Denver in conservative custom at 19 yrs of age. That car was the best teacher I ever had!

I like that you are showing these cars, but it would be MUCH better if you allowed the owners of the car to talk and tell their story about their car. At least twice, they began to talk about an interesting aspect of the car, but you quickly cut them off so that you could continue dominating the conversation. 1. The guy began to talk about the article that caught his interest in the 1970 Cougar Eliminator, but you brushed it off and changed the subject. 2. The lady commented that her favorite aspect of the car are it's sequential turn signal lights in the rear. That was an obvious opportunity to show off that feature to the viewers, many/most have probably never seen that rare feature. It would have also shown that you were respectful of their opinions about their own car. But once again, you immediately blew it off and moved on. All I'm saying is that it's best to let the person who owns the car, knows the most about it, and who spent over 2 decades working on it, to be given adequate time to educate your viewers about it. When you dominate the conversation, it seems that you are trying to make it mostly about you.
