1970 Ford Torino Cobra 429 SCJ Muscle Car Of The Week Video #75
The Ford Torino has always been an aggressively styled Muscle Car, but for 1970, it received a whole new look! This 1970 Torino Cobra is powered by the 429 Super Cobra Jet V8 engine making 375 HP and enough torque to fry the tires at will. It is finished in Vermillion, which provides a stark contrast against the satin black hood, shaker scoop, and tail panel accents to let everyone know this Cobra is not messing around. From the Brothers Collection.

I went to college in Maine and a classmate from Albany NY had a 70 Torino 429 SCJ, 4 spd, beautiful yellow and black. His father owned a dealership so John came back each semester with something new, but this was the best yet. I f I remember right this car had an optional 4:30 diff. Well, John let me drive it out on the highway. We're cruising along at 70 and he tells me to nail it. Like an idiot, I downshifted into 3rd and lit up the tires bigtime at 70 mph! I never even saw the tach but from the sound of the engine it had to be close to redline. He used to blow off 383 Cudas, 440 Magnum Chargers and most other stuff that tried to mess with him. Fantastic looking and running car. The 4:30 gears did the trick in short runs. That car had to be putting out more than the already stout 375 hp it was factory rated at which was typical of the time to understate horsepower.

Back in 70 a friend of mine ordered this same car but with a 4-speed and 4:30 gears. As soon as he received the car after waiting 6 weeks he was out street racing it. A neighbor had a 65 GTO with a 389 tri-power 4-speed and 4:10 gears along with Indy mags and a big cam of some kind. They ran the cars and the GTO won by four cars. Next he ran a 69 Hemi Charger auto and 3:91 gears and lost bad. I don't remember him ever winning and race although he could have after I was drafted in Oct.

I had a 1970 Torino SCJ back in 1975, I bought it from a neighbor who was the original owner, he ordered it when he was coming back from Vietnam, Ford had an incentive program for soldiers returning from Vietnam. It was yellow, black interior, high back buckets, 4 speed, drag pack, rear louvers. I used to laugh when they said that car had 375 HP, that car was a rocket, tremendous power off the line, great car, wish I still had it. Recently test drove a 1970 429 CJ that was advertised locally, what a joke compared to the car I had, no power.

In my home town in the '80s, there was a guy with a triple-black 70 Torino GT convertible, it was evil, one guy had a red Mercury Comet GT, several 1st Gen Camaros were always driving around, a 'platinum-mist 70 GS455 Stage 1 driven by a _grandmother_ was often seen, there was a show-car '68 442 with crazy graphics the guy drove every nice sunday,, the guy down the street had a '71 Le Mans with a 350 4bbl, the guy up the street had an honest to God '69 Charger Daytona that was just sitting in his yard, another guy had a '70 Mach 1, another guy had a '69 Super Bee...go to the package store on a saturday and it was like a damned car show. Big car show in that same town since the '70s, and the day I entered my own muscle car in that show, and was _ordered by the attending police to do a burnout as I left_ was the day I knew things could be pretty good.

I remember going into a Ford dealer with a relative to look at one like this, there was a Grabber Green 70 Mustang fastback with white inside and a 4 speed which I looked at but my relative checked out the cost for the Torino 500 GT in Bright Yellow with black hood and rear decals plus the side decal and rear window louvers and a 4 speed. If there were buyers that focused on taking these monsters on a local track to have fun, they wouldn't have been skewered by the insurance companies or ended up as rare today for the survivors that cheated the crusher as scrap.

Johnnyc drums Why? because the 428 CJ was a good street/strip performance engine. The 429 CJ was a different engine family and was to be Ford's answer in NASCAR. Designed for sustained mid to high RPM use the ports were way too big for street use. Poor low end throttle response and thus poor drivability did these cars in on the street and E.T.'s that a 428 could attain or surpass didn't really show the 429 to be a superior engine in any meaningful way.

Most beautiful year of Torino ever made.....wish they'd kept the 427 engines over the 429.....much better engine in terms of potential. The doggone shock towers jutted in on the 429/460 and the exhaust ports made basically a U-turn getting out of the head. I've built several 429/460's and that is a bone of contention with me. A fella needs to just chuck the cast iron heads and go with a good-flowing aftermarket head. Beautiful car....if you don't have room for it I will gladly open a space in my garage. Lookin' good, Kevin...are you cutting weight? I need to.......sigh.....

At (1:55) you said the 429 SCJ had a 10'5:1 compression ratio, This is Not correct ! The 1970 429 SCJ is 11.3:1 ratio with a solid lifter and a Holley 4150-780 cfm this was fantastic engine, the 429 CJ is 11.3:1 ratio with a hydraulic lifter and a Rochester 760 cfm, the Thunderjet 429 is 10.5:1 ratio with a Ford 600 cfm. 1971 the SCJ and CJ stayed the same and the Thunderjet was dropped from the Torino and Cyclone. Also Ford like the other derated their engines greatly, the 429 SCJ was actually 430 hp not 370. And earlier 68/69' Torino, Cyclone, 68-70' Mustang and Cougars that had the 428 SCJ that was laughingly rated at 335 HP !!! It was more like 410-415 HP. : )

Fords FE engines ranged between 332 and 428 cid., while the 429 and 460 were 385 series engines. The Boss 429 also had the 385 block, designed for use with Fords hemispherical heads, with the canted/angled valves. Ford should have built it, I imagine the torque of a Boss 460 would have been around 600 lbft....

Aleksandar Lozanovski My '68 Torino GT was 351 Windsor/FMX automatic. I would bet C6 behind a 429. Not sure an FMX would be up to the task or rather torque of a big block.

Karl X Yeah, I remember the first batch of '68 Roadrunner's. Touted as a price leading muscle car. 383 4spd. vinyl bench seat. Rubber floor instead of carpet. Tilt out rear seat side Windows rather than roll down. Cheap, light and good looking and with a 383 Magnum as the base performance engine with an optional 440 and 426 Hemi it was all business, no frills.

+Dan Troy The test was cool, but the 1974 Torino wasn't that powerful. I have a 1970 Torino GT with the 351 Cleveland and it has more hp than the 429 in 1972 and the power ratings only got lower as the years went on. That was because starting in 1971 the government started cracking down on the automobile industry. They were forced to lower the hp dramatically and use emission controls, that even made them weaker. I would like to see the '69 Charger vs the '69 or this '70 Torino (either Cobra or GT)
