1969 Ford Torino Cobra 428 CJ Ram Air 4-Speed Muscle Car Of The Week Episode 298
It was all about racing when this one hit the streets. Ford did well in the ‘68 NASCAR season with Dave Pearson driving a Torino, and the sleek Cobra was back for more in ‘69!
Aerodynamics had become a major factor in high-speed NASCAR racing by 1969, and the Ford Torino Cobra was as slick as they came. The long nose and slippery SportsRoof fastback profile made it easy for the muscular 428 Cobra Jet V8 to power through the wind. While the NASCAR racers racked up wins, the street versions won their share of unsanctioned stop light drags on main street USA.
Power came from the 428 Super Cobra Jet V8, rated at 335 HP. Was that accurate? We don’t think so, as Ford actually admitted to “conservatively” rating this one in a 1969 Cobra magazine ad.
The 335 HP rating given to the 428 Cobra Jet has long been challenged, as the NHRA’s power-to-weight HP rating put the 428 CJ at 380 HP. Power is made by a 10.6:1 compression ratio, with stout internals and 735 CFM carb, breathing through the Ram Air intake system.
The 4-speed transmission spins a 3.50 open rear axle, which still provides for hard launches thanks to the 440 pound feet of torque from the big 428. It also allows for highway cruising without spinning the engine into a tizzy. Dual exhaust pokes out below the bumper.
This one is tagged with District Service Office 21, which means it was sold new in the Atlanta sales district. Here’s a piece of trivia... Ford DSOs start with lower numbers on the East Coast, and higher numbers moving westward. For example, The LA DSO is 71, and export cars are 90 to 99.
This Cobra is equipped with a black bench-seat interior, and only what’s needed to get the job done. A Cobra-badged shift knob tops the 4-speed handle, and an aftermarket tach is hose clamped to the steering column. A trio of add-on gauges hang below the dash, and aside from power brakes and an AM radio, this one is as bare as they come.
But it does have cool styling! We love the roofline with the upswept rear quarter windows and the three speedy-looking simulated side vents on the sail panel. Cobra badging is cool, too, with angry snakes on the fenders and tail panel. Striped stainless trim spanning between the tail lights is interrupted by the fuel filler cap, similar to the Mustang in style. The functional hood scoop wears 428 badges on the sides and turn signals on the back, also similar to Mustangs of the time.
The Cobra rolls on 14” rally wheels with sport suspension, and they handled pretty well for being a midsize ride. In a straight line, 4-speed Cobras were timed at 14.5 seconds at 100 mph back in the day, with Motor Trend reporting an automatic version running 14.04, also at 100 mph.
Dave Pearson did it again in ‘69, winning the NASCAR season behind the wheel of a Cobra bodied stock car. We think the street version is a winner, too… what do you think? My dad had one that he bought from our cousin in 1973. Red, sportsroof, R code, Ram Air, C6, bench seat. While he was dating my mom, He went to her house quite often in that Cobra. One day she ticked my dad off, , and I have no idea what about, but her 2 brothers were watching my dad go up the hill to pull back out on the 4 lane highway. Super pissed off and heading home, My long haired, bell bottom wearing 18 year old father nailed it as he turned the wheel right to head back South. The car laid rubber about the length of a football field on the automatic transmission going through 3 years. My Uncles (kids at the time) who were out front playing on the Bank, said that he almost got it on 2 wheels! Hey disappeared in a plume of smoke. I guess they made up because I came along about 2 years later...1975 He dragged race to guy one night and cracked 7 out of 8 pistons. The Ford mechanic at the dealership pulled the 390 from his Galaxie and swapped it with my dad's 428. My dad didn't know until years later. My grandfather talked to my dad into giving him the Cobra which he traded for a tractor. He bought my mom and dad a 63 Mercury Monterey. I looked for my dad's old snake from 1986 until last year when I found it in a junkyard.

@@markreisen7038 I haven't had my car on a dyno, but according to "Ford Performance" the 427 is "supposed to" put out 535 HP and 545 lb.ft. of torque. That's with an Edelbrock manifold and 770 cfm carb. Mine is not carbureted. I've got an efi set-up. I also need to upgrade my exhaust so it breathes better - but I need to save a little cash before I can do that. I know I can still get a little more power out of that motor - but I'm hoping I'm close to 500 ponies. And the 427 is a small block (built on a 351 block). Still I think having an original 428 cobrajet would be way cooler.

I so wish I sold my car and bought one of these. I am still looking for one. But now I can buy a C8 for half the price. There was a 1970 Torino gt fitted with a “shotgun” or boss if you will 429. A friend of mine had it in the late 70’s and it had a cross brace over the engine with factory experimental on it. It was sold by accident and my friend acquired it completely covered in mud from front to back, inside and out.

Years later it ended up being dismantled and the engine, trans and rear axle were taken out while the body was crushed. My friend found it a few days before it being crushed but didn’t have the money to buy what was left of the car back..........sad but true.

Yeah, that 'one wheel peel' would be embarrassing. That would need changing. Add a modern aftermarket overdrive to that 4-speed (calls for new shorter driveshaft.) and you can run 4:11 gears in that rear end. That'll slow down those RPMs on the highway and add extra push on the starting line. Funny, I read people bitching here about changing from stock and that'll ruin the car and it's value. Wake-up people, all mechanical changes CAN be reversed and returned to original as long as your not hacking and cutting metal. Just keep the old parts.

What I don't understand is how KZread videos show that a 1970 Red Torino 429 scj can vary with times of 13.71 vs Red Cuba with 440 of 13.78 on here to another 1970 Torino 429 scj of 12.93 to a Transam of 13.23 to a 1970 Red Torino 429scj of 13.64 vs a Camaross396 of 13.59 to a 1970 Torino 429scj with 13.08 vs Olds w-31 which wound up doing real bad so didn't write down time to finally a 1970 Torino 429scj of 12.72 to a 1969 Yenko 427 Camaro of 12.0 then 12.59. Then it was mentioned that Motor Trend ran a 1970 Torino 429 scj with 4 speed and driver to 4206 lbs. to a 13.99 time in Feb. 1970. These times ranged so badly that I thought maybe read end as one guy stated that stock was geared 3.91 with Detroit Locker gearing being 4.30 but that couldn't be right as narrator advised 1970 Red Torino with 429scj had 4.57 factory gearing for 12.72 race vs 1969 Yenko 427 Camaro so something else had to account for difference of 1.27 seconds so what?????
