650hp LT4, 6 speed Magnum trans, SS Chevelle
Classic vibes, Modern performance. This GM Performance 650hp LT4 powered 1970 Chevy Chevelle was Muscle Car Of The Year. Its orginal 454ci big block replaced with reliable smooth modern horsepower! One key to success with an automotive build is to start with good raw material, and this Chevelle was a stunning example when the owner brought it to us. Once the Chevelle was in the hands of ProtouringTexas.com. Our crew completely disassembled the drivetrain, suspension, interior, and wiring. The paint and body were in excellent condition. With all components removed, fabrication began with fitting the massive Tremec Magnum F series manual transmission into the Chevelle's transmission tunnel. No easy task, but well worth the effort. With the LT4/T56 combination fitted, a full compliment of suspension upgrades from Umi Performance were added, including double adjustable Viking shocks, fully boxed, braced, and stiffened numbers matching chassis were bolted to the body after a quick clean up under the car. This horsepower level requires the ability to slow everything down fast, that's why a set of Pro+ 6 piston caliper, 14 inch rotor stopping gear were used from Baer Brakes. With everything installed we could move to exhaust, Ultimate headers was first on the list to find a set of high quality header for the LT4. They sent a perfect pair of headers for fitment and we went to work modifying the mandrel bent stainless steel parts from Stainless Brothers to complete an exhaust worthy of an art show installation. Completing the drivetrain, we used a Holley Performance wet sump mid mount accessory drive along with a wiring harness and flashed E92 factory pcm, and GM fuel pump moduel from Speartech. The interior of this Chevelle features a rare factory optioned saddle color, including bucket seats and center console. Instrumentation from Dakota Digital fill in the factory SS dash with modern technology and classic vibes. Fast ratio power steering, full custom Bluetooth audio, and air conditioning that's upgraded with a Sure-fit Vintage Air system and smooth firewall.

As a young dumb kid with no mechanical skills I owned a 70 Chevelle. Calling it a project was kind.. I needed a lot of help. Had to sell it cause I was broke, needed money and was way in over my head with the car needing repairs. Ironically, being forced to sell it made me determined to learn how to work on cars and ultimately led me to go to automotive school. Nearly 20 years now as a technician, at one point a Lexus Master technician. Chevelles now are just retardedly expensive, even as rolling chassis projects. But I got a 73 Nova project and for now, thats all I need.

It looks amazing, I like how it uses a big powerful modern V8 in an old muscle car, but I would still keep the 454 (7.4L) because it was the most powerful muscle car in 1970, this was essentially the C7 ZR1 of it’s day. Besides the engine looks really small in there. Still cool though

I’m all for modernizing it. However, if someone took an original 454 ss and just yanked the 454 just because….that’s just wrong. If the engine was bad, I’d understand. Man, I hope that 454 is somewhere near that it could be put back in if wanted.

Ya but the kind of person that can afford to do that doesn’t care about numbers matching. I’ll bet there’s nearly 6 figures in parts, and another 6 figures in labor. That said, I’d still do it. I have a 72 with a 454bbc and 4 speed manual, and if I could afford to do this, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

No F-ing Way!! IF it is the original drive train , you do all the hi-performance parts you want to do to that engine and leave it in the car. IF you supercharge that 454 and build it correctly, you can get 700-800HP out of that 454. 👍

I wanna drive my car and if it needs modern suspension and drive Train to make it badass , so be it. But mine is an automatic , so if you put a 6 speed tranny in it , now I can slap stick through gears one by one. Just makes the car more fun to drive. IMO
