1970 Cadillac Superior Ambulance, Vintage, Responding

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Vintage 1970 Cadillac ambulance with Superior Coaches high-top conversion (non-suicide door model). Ambulance has no company markings because footage was made for TV, so it's only identified as "Ambulance." It's running red lights & siren (Code 3) to take Sally McMillan to the hospital after a fall and early labor scare.
She is attended to by Mildred, the McMillan's housekeeper. This would have been just before the paramedic era, so patting Sally on the head was about all the could have done for her anyway.

That Cadillac Superior Coach used to be Schaefer's Ambulance #45. The siren you hear is dubbed from Adam 12 which was either a Federal Director or interceptor. Unit 45 had only a B&M Super Chief which is an electro-mechanical which was much better for LA traffic. The interior of the van ambulance was either #65 out of Lynwood or #66-67 out of East LA. They were 1969-1970 Ford Econoline vans which were half ton and had the 302 two barrel. The interior of the vans were built locally for Walt Schaefer. I worked on all of the above mentioned units in the 1970-1973 era. Surprisingly, the old Ford vans held up pretty well considering they were not heavy duty models and had standard Ford drum brakes. After a few heavy breaking at intersections, fading came into play. Trivia, I know. The vans all had the Federal Director-Interceptor with one speaker and all had the B&M Super Chief. Unit 67 also out of East Los Angeles did have only the B&M.

Code3Forever I grew up in and around San Francisco in the 60' s and '70s and San Francisco Ambulance Service , which was the primary backup for the Department of Public Health did have the Super Cheifs until the early 80's . But , the times have changed and SFAS is now part of AMR .

The siren sounds that were dubbed in for the ambulance and the police car were recordings of an early to mid-1960s Federal PA20 electronic siren. The colours of the ambulance look like the paint scheme for Schaefer ambulance service of Los Angeles (c. mid-1960s to early 1970s).

+nmtoc the PA20's I heard were done on Manual setting with a looped recording. I did seem to see Schaefer on the back of the ambulance; likely they were enlisted to provide "shoot" cars. Definitely a classic rig among my favorites.

As with every show Universal produced in that era that dealt with first responders, even when the car is clearly equipped with a "growler", probably a Super Chief! And I never was able to figure out why SFPD only had the one little red light on their cruisers. Frequent fog would seem to argue for more lighting.

@@knoodelhed It was enough to fit CA-State regulations. All the emergency vehicle had to have was a front facing steady-burn red light as well as one rear facing flashing amber light. LAPD had a similar setup to at that time, same for LASD up until they changed to the TwinSonic in the 70s (the LAPD used the tin-can styled lights up to the 80s, when they started using the FedSig AeroDynic on the Caprices).

Strange for the attendant to be seated in the front passenger seat during transport. There is never an occasion for an attendant to leave a patient in the back with a friend and go sit in front, much less during a siren-blowing emergency. The attendant knew what equipment they had, where it was, and how to use it, but Mildred would have no such knowledge. Interestingly, the exterior shot at the 51 sec mark shows that only the driver is seated in the front seat.

Artistic licence, I think. I don’t think producers/directors were much interested in authenticity.

The siren pictured on the ambulance is a mechanical B&M Superchief, but what your hear is a Federal interceptor.
