1967 Rolex Explorer Ref 1016 "Fat Font" Matte Dial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this episode of "What Is On My Wrist" Cam takes us through the matte dial range of the Rolex Explorer 1 Ref 1016 and reviews a rare dial variant of Rolex Explorer 1 Ref. 1016 commonly referred to as the "Fat Font". The Explorer 1 reference bridges the gap between a dress watch and a sports watch. Without the crown guards and rotating bezels commonly found on sports models offered by Rolex, the Explorer I has a cleaner, sleeker profile while incorporating recognizable sport model features into the dial. The highly visible block indices, luminescent numerals at the 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 9 o'clock positions, and the Submariner style triangle at the 12 o'clock position allow for readability under any conditions. The Submariner hands featured on the Ref. 1016 add to the unique feel and appearance.
The earliest matte dial variants for the Rolex Explorer I ref. 1016 featured a coronet that is commonly referred to as the "frog foot" as this era of coronet (post gilt dial) resembles a frog's foot where later variants on the ref. 1016 are much more stout and pronounced. Of the early “frog foot” ref. 1016 dial variants, the “fat font” or “fat lume” dial variant is the most elusive, rare, and sought after amongst the collecting community for its thicker and more pronounced 3, 6, and 9 numerals that are visibly much larger than the standard numerals seen on early Rolex ref. 1016 dial variants.

Another great informative video, the suggestion of the in-depth review about the dial variants is good, as you can never get enough about different Coronets.

Important point missed .. The composition of Lume changes at the end of the 18m series …. Up until that time.. zinc sulfide was mixed with Tritium … it will light up under UV light .. after 18m series .. Rolex stopped at least began reducing use of zinc sulfide in watch dials and hands .. or at least the makers of the dials the hands did.. For collectors you know the notorious 70s dead Tritium dials . Anyway might be an important point for some but not others… however from a collector stand point I just thought I’d mention it..

I have a 2023 40 mm Explorer with exactly the same dial lay out and text as on this 1016 which is good to see that it has stood the test of time and still looks contemporary.

Indeed but Rolex sponsored Himalayan expeditions since 1933, so the pilots flying over Mt Everest wore Rolex in April 1933. The name "Explorer" was patented January 27, 1953. Always remember it could have been Rolex first on top of Mount Everest if British climbers Charles Evans and Thomas Bourdillon made it on May 26, 1953 but had to return after being very close to the summit... Three days later Edmund Hillary & Tenzing Norgay made it to the top!

Another thing you could add to the tech specs is lug to lug measurements, I think that can have as much influence on wearability as case size.

Beautiful Watch. The 1016 is A Design Classic. The Beauty of the Explorer is that it Skews Bimodally. I really like the late 80s L-Series. Problem IS, however Service. It is getting more difficult Daily to find Independent Watchmakers who can get Rolex Parts, i.e. the SuperDomePlexi. Yr only other alternative is " The Rolex Service-Centre" Treatment where you can Kiss Yr Vintage 1016 "Goodbye"!

Already since 1933 (Houston-Hamilton flight overEverest) Rolex had been sponsoring British Himalayan climbing expeditions. 🧐 On January 26, 1953 Rolex had the name " Explorer " as Swiss patent registered. Mt Everest/Chomolungma was conquered in May 1953 !

The Oyster Perpetual is also a sports watch, not a dress watch. And it was marketed as a date devil watch.
