51 years ago I had the twin to the GTX and had a 68 Dodge Dart 340 matching color. Sure makes me wish I could go back. The little dart was faster in the quarter mile but the GTX would run against anything on the turnpike and leave them in the dust. Bury the needle all day at 150 mph. Sure was a hellva ride. I bought my '67 4 door Impala for $3,250. Had to drive to Florida and knock off the vandalization. It had spray paint on every fender, the rear window was busted out, and every piece of leather was cut to the metal with a razor blade, BUT the engine, transmission and all everything else under the car were still flawless. I'm about halfway to making her good as new. So far, I've spent $6,200.

Some of you guys need to learn terminology when it comes to discussing gear ratio's: "steeper" or "taller" gearing is LOWER in numbers, such as the GTX. Lower gear numbers means higher top speeds NOT suited for drag racing. HIGHER numbers such as 4:10 to 1 & 4:56 to 1 are GEARED LOWER, which gives the engine easier ability to rev quicker for drag racing, but they lose top end speed. You will not be "cruising along" on the interstate at 120 mph with 4:10 to 1 and 4:56 to 1 gears without running the engine to death at high rpm's. So with the gearing this GTX has, it could run higher speeds on the highway much easier than this COPO Camaro. But conversely, we all see what happens on the drag strip.

I hope some viewers don't take my response as being harsh, but I've been noticing an ever-growing number of guys getting the terminology for rear gearing ass backwards. If someone doesn't speak up to teach em, then it will continue to the point a huge myth is born, lol. Of course this class of racing has strict rules for street skinny's.......but these muscle cars with low gears for drag racing ( 4:10, 4:30, 4:56, etc ) would be even quicker with bigger tires.

I disagree. Although dad had a beautiful black with red accents and interior '61 SS which was powered by a screaming 4 speed, tri-power 348, when I got a good look over of a '62 with the exact same color combo I remembered of dad's, I fell in love with it. Up until that time I had always wanted a '61 just like I remembered from my youth, I just had to switch years for an impala one year newer.

Yes, the SS427 was its own model. It was code Z24, which got you the special domed hood with chrome ornament in the center, plus its own emblems. Even though it was based on the Impala body, it wasn't an Impala. Although most people would call it an Impala, the name "Impala" does not appear on an SS427 anywhere. There are only SS427 and Chevrolet badges on it. Even in the advertising, you'll see the car called an SS427, and not an Impala SS. So, an SS427 is technically different from an Impala SS. The Impala SS had dfferent emblems that said "Impala SS". And you could get an Impala SS with a 427, so that's what the video car is. Also, the SS427 engine did not make more HP than the 427 in an Impala SS. In 67, only the 385hp 427 was available for the full size cars. Only the Corvette got the higher HP 427's.

Best looking Impala out of the series! Black makes it ever cooler. Now ... can I gripe for a moment? Chevrolet for some reason puts that huge motor in there and expects it to breath with that little choked off air cleaner snorkel? I never did understand that. The over size filter of course fixes that prob. Too, many times they would install single exhaust unless duals were ordered and an open rear end unless a limited slip was ordered.... I found this out the hard way back in the day. Great car, I'd love to have one. The GTX is cool too, much lighter, a better gear would help and 68 was the year for sure!
